I've not watched it but I think it looks too modern....they have failed to give it the 'old/classic' touch. The songs are rubbish. Rekha looked better as Umrao than Aishwariya.

I watched it today and absolutely loved it! ashiwarya looked stunning(i didnt like her before watching this movie)!..the dresses and jewellery were beautiful....i would really recommend it

I would never dream of comapring the two movies. The old one is an absolute classic, and cannot be matched. Same as Don.

Its a good thing I don;t remember much of the original movie or I may not have liked it. looking at the weak points it seemed as if they focused more on umrao jaans beauty than her intellegence, ettiquettes and poetic charms. Ash looked really very pretty, gorgeous costumes and jewelry. She and abhishek are brought together with love at first sight than stimulating eachothers minds with their words. Its a very quick development without depth, I don;t remember them indulging in dialogue at all actually, they fell in love too quick. She acted out the emotional scenes pretty well though especially where abhishek sends her back to the brothel and when her mother and brother discard her 
I did not like sunil shetty’s portrayal of his character, maybe because I don;t like sunil shetty at all, i hate his dialogue delivery, shabana azmi played her role well, bismillah and the other girl seemed more like extras in the movie, abhishek was somewhat passive throughout the movie, but I think that was a role requirement was it? No poetic dialogue from him either. The music, sets, costumes, jewelry and ash will entertain you though. I kept comparing it with the recent umrao jaan play on Geo, I think aamna bano played a better umrao jaan. but then again that was a play with much more room for character development so it would be unfair to compare the two.

sad sad movie… songs seem to be the same all along.. id say so cause it wasnt my kinda movie.. ash looked really nice though .. but the movie just dragged and dragged.. too slow for my liking.. some ppl might like it

good stuff... seems not too bad... i think i'll just go watch it cuz it's a period film n i really like those.. plus abishek/ash on-screen chemistry... she looks older than him most times anyways!!

I watched it yesterday songs are fine but acting are horrible from both sides...ash and abhi...only Shabana Azmi justified with her role. In a scale of 10 i'm giving 4.5.....old Umrao jaan was 4 thumbs up...

Two songs (more like ghazals) are absolute gems. Will watch the movie whenever I have time though.

ash looks beautiful as usual but she needs to gain some weight! she looks malnourished and sick in many scenes! u can see the area around her eye starting to hollow out and her face shape has changed. I wish she'd eat a few samosas!

I LOVED it! Ash did a wonderful job! I was disappointed that they didnt focus on umrao jaan's poetry but other than that the movie was really good and extremely sad.
The thing I hated the most about the movie was that they changed Faiz Ali's character. In the original, he's not a bad man and in this one they make him out to be evil.
Salaam is my fav song from the movie. The Bitya song is also good and ws used really well in the movie.

I think the weight loss makes her look a little old too but even then the cow looks pretty.
loved ‘pehle pehal’ too.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever want to watch the movie…I read the original novel by Mirza Mohammed Hadi Ruswa almost 10 years ago, and watched the original Rekha movie a few times… the last time I watched it was a year ago, and at that time, I wondered why that movie still attracts an audience as it did before… it has stood the test of time.
In the reviews that I have read so far, most critics are carping the impulsive hastiness ofthe screenplay – its such a pity since in the original movie, it was the maturity of the screenplay that made all the difference… the melancholy thread in the film is developed right up to the last scene in the movie with the depiction of the dried leaves.
