UK or Canada?

Husband wouldnt settle for good here in Pak and im not much into living in KSA where he works at present. So maybe we will select one of these options. Husband can get work permit but my choice will be study visa since Im a govt servant and we can avail study leave (not that the govt will sponsor me). London could be a better choice since we have pretty many relatives there but some suggest canada as its easier to get visa which it wont be like for UK. The only prob being we dont have any any aquaintance in canada. So I would just rather if folks around here can suggest which place could be a better choice.

Thanks.

Re: UK or Canada?

salaam mirage,

it is a personal preference honestly, but the main differences between the two are that canadian immigration is faster , and overall living expense in canada is way cheaper then UK and best of all we are right next to UNCLE SAM :k:

Re: UK or Canada?

I will prefer Canada since there is a level of respect for MUSLIMS/Pakistani there compared to London/UK ..

Re: UK or Canada?

you may want to keep in mind the employment and career situation of people with non canadian degrees and experience. it seems like they tend to have a much tougher time finding jobs in their fields.

canadian immigration is much easier than UK though.

u know this how?

This is much appreciated, Kaun, to have atleast the scenario rather clearer, since it is like being starters here. Im feeling like convinced :k: Thanks

Yes and this is where your social circle is of pretty much help. Canadian immigration being a positive aspect, my sister just got UK visa, within a month of submission of the application so maybe I wont be having much trouble therein too as the brother in law can help us but the headache will it or will it not be is what actually evades.

My preference being studies it sure can help me when im back here since I do not really plan to settle there for good. And canadian immigration might not be on study basis I reckon. Coz a friend told me I have better chances because of my work experience, so maybe it will be work permit that is not my actual interest at the moment.

Re: UK or Canada?

Can anyone suggest if there are good universities in Canada, what kind of courses/ degrees they usually offer and if the degree is cheaper/ expensive. As far as I know England ranks second in the standard of education, US being the first.

you might be true. what i have heard of london is being mini asia itself with having well many many relatives, I might spend the first year only seeing them each. racially also conditions are better there as compared in US I guess, but people survive even there too.

I depends what education you are gona pursue .. ..

  • if you are talking about business, then overall UK ranks above canada, though there are few schools in canada which are really good (schualic school of york uni) but still UK rank better in business

  • if you are talking about computer science, then i guess Waterloo university of canada is one of the best university in computer science in world. then there is university of toronto, McGill ..

  • For medical, you might find good schools here in canada (McMaster is awesome) but getting into medical here is tought. Canada does not accept any other internation medical degree, you have to pass an exam which is too hard. its like you are gona compete agains 1400 students in an exam.

Oh dear, my major is humanities; the literature :hinna:

Re: UK or Canada?

I have this thing for human resources too, so maybe this is the course I might persue.

Re: UK or Canada?

well the point is .. you have to get admission in the best university of the country you are gona live in .. :$ ..

Re: UK or Canada?

Canada is the best out of these 2!!!

I lived in UK for a while too...it was good..but people in Canada are more respectful and accepting than the UK.

When I lived in the UK I saw with my own eyes Pakistani ppl being insulted in open...but over here so far I have not seen it happening...UK's cost of living is also MUCH higher than Canada....

Re: UK or Canada?

T1000, yes. I might work to afford that too :@: I guess I will be able to earn rnough to pay my fee and thats it.

Aaliya, Im tempted :k:

Or maybe I will file the application for the both :hmmm: waiting which clicks first…seems like I have positive prospects in both, right?

Re: UK or Canada?

mirage, I dont know about Canada, the higher education in UK for a non-EU person is way higher than the EU or home students, unless you are supported for living and other expanses by your hubby, I dont think working part time can easily cover £10000 per year, thats only tution fee.

when i done my masters here, i had a very decent part time job, but that only covered my living expenses. for tuition fee i had to rely on Pakistani funds. people who tried to cover all expenses, ended up finishing masters in 5 years instead of 1!

So keep that in mind.

dont take Canada or UK better in education as a statement, both countries like other have good and worst universities, better universities in both countries are valued worldwide.

Re: UK or Canada?

Shak, I have pretty much saving for that regard. Again, my hubby will be there too, so the other expenses are not the matter to worry about. Again, if Im out on study leave, my department will also have me have my whole or half salary for sure so that can be a help too. What the most difficult thing is to take the plunge. Im living a comfortable life here. Job is settled, Im rooted. I do not need to study higher for my job requirements too. Its just that somehow me and the hubby will live together. And yes I will love to puruse higher studies too, since I can make it this way.

Re: UK or Canada?

If you do decide to apply for a UK visa, I reckon you need to do it ASAP considering the new govenment and policies. I don't think they have changed immigration policies yet, but you never know.

Re: UK or Canada?

yea i have heard they have changed a few of their policies. Like now on there is a particular limit on the number of dependent visas thats 1000 per year or something, but thats nothing to do with the issuance of student visas I guess.

So why not consider outside London if you've heard that London is a mini Asia (for the record, London is very diverse). It may come as a shock to many (I doubt it will to you Mirage) but there are many more cities in England apart from London-Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol...and so on.

Each country, each region has it's own plus and negatives that's simply the way it works.

As others have said, The UK will have a shake up of visas/immigration that is set to hit in April 2011, I'm not 100% sure if this will effect your circumstances but it's worth looking into.
