what is wrong is wrong, there is no need to shy away from admitting errors, and weaknesses. whether the wrongs are outweighed by the rights, or whether other nations had more wrongs does not matter. The reasons do not matter. Justifications, misdirections and tangents are not the right thing to do.
There should be no problem admitting that there were low points in our history where things were done which were not right. No country is unique in that respect, everyone has had low points in its history. Using the weaknesses and errors of another one to shelter our own weaknesses and errors is avoiding the question.
Maybe its the pot calling the kettle black..sure..but it does not change the fact that both the pot and the kettle are black :)
