U.S. Promotes American Way of Islam

An American Way of Islam

State Dept. Advertises American Way of Islam to Arab Audiences in Publicity Campaign

SOURCE: ABC

W A S H I N G T O N, Oct. 30 — The United States is offering Muslim countries four U.S.-prepared television commercials aimed at providing a better understanding of Islam in America.

The four ads, each about two minutes long, are part of a $15 million campaign by Charlotte Beers, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and a former Madison Avenue advertising executive. The ads explain “what kind of a society we are, how we treat people,” to countries often hostile to the United States, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Wednesday.

Boucher said the ads are now being tried out in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, and negotiations are under way to buy airtime in other Muslim nations in Asia and the Middle East and on media outlets that reach many Arab countries.

“The goal was to use the period of Ramadan to play these ads because there’s a tradition of people telling the story of Islam in their country during the month of Ramadan,” Boucher said. The fasting period starts next month.

The spots feature a doctor, Elias Zerhouni, the Algerian-born director of the National Institutes of Health; a Libyan-born baker, Abdul Hammuda of Toledo, Ohio; a Lebanese-born teacher, Rawia Ismal of Toledo; and a medic with the New York Fire Department, Farouk Muhammad.

They were produced in conjunction with the Council of American Muslims for Understanding, a nonprofit, nonpolitical group dedicated to providing a better understanding of Islam in America, Boucher said.

He said that in some countries the ads have been submitted to censorship boards because everything that goes on television in those countries must be approved by such a board.

Boucher said he was not ready to put out a list of countries the United States was talking to about the ads because the campaign may be adjusted based on its performance in Indonesia.

“We decided we would actually go out and try to buy advertising time where we wanted it, when we wanted it to the people we wanted to hear our story,” he said.

Asked if the ads would ever be broadcast by the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite network, which reaches many Arab countries, Boucher said, “They wanted too much money.”

He said the United States was under no illusions that the ads would stop suicide bombers by showing Islamic militants the United States was tolerant of their religion.

“I know that there are an awful lot of people, though, who need to know more about the United States,” he said, “who what they think they know about the United States is based on distorted images and rumor … and that’s its good for us to tell them our story.”

Is’nt this called propoganda in the dictionary :hoonh:

Plus i don’t think there are enough dumb muslims who will fall for these lies!

yeah the dumb ones already fell for the propoganda of OBL and taleban

point per point US is more islamic than most muslim countries, opportunity for ppl, law, education, justice, social welfare.

do you understand the meaning of the word “comparatively”

US by no means is a perfect society. It has its faults and it needs to address them. But..as an individual you have a closer way of being treated as you would as islam says, that the govt should look out for ppl, should work for their good, should provide adequate facilities and resources for education, health, social services etc..to live a good life.

and this is better here than in most other countries and from what I know any muslim country, and I have lived in a few and travelled to **any of those .

**why don’t you just stop defending the enemies of islam for a change makes you look too much of a coconut  **

If you see good soemwhere why not recognize it? and while we are resorting to trading personal insults. Why dont you take your blinders off once in a while and look at world with an open mind. Otherwise it just makes you look like a kath mullah. :snooty:

funny how you fail to mention the bombing of afghanistan and the thousands butchered there or ur american human rights when they bombed living crap out of iraq **

funny how you fail to mention the iran iraq war, the killings in bangladesh, sectarian violnvce in Pakistan, 99% of what taleban did.

The point that you seem to miss dear fellow is I am not talking about foriegn policy here. US foriegn policy sucks, so does the foriegn policy of every other country.

I am referrign to the type of life you can lead here and the support and plannign by the govt to provide for its citizens.

Stop sucking up to america you wanna live there fine don’t expect rest of the world to look at a nation that gives guns to 10 year olds so they can shoot there teacher in the head!

Nobody wants to live in a disgusting society where at work they see woman as a joke and send filthy emails about the woman like she is entertainment for them.

And as a muslim the last place on earth i would want to live is in the heart of the enemy who uses every weapons in it possesion to destroy the ummah or did u forget u was a muslim now

As for iran iraq who supplied the weapons and instigated it your heros the americans :2guns:

looks like grapes have been sour for ak47 at the US embassy in Islamabad.

Who want to live in usa??? let us see..To start with some of your big wig MMA leaders have kids living here...Musharraf's kids living here..anyone in Pakistan who considers himself some body has a son or a daughter here. Lines in front of US Embassy might give you some clue who wants to live in US.

I tried to adopt ak47 but his application was turned down by the authorities. Something about ak47 being a kaffir weapon and all.

:k:

Coming back to the main topic.... as part of commenting on it, several distinguished political analysts, said that these ads, while a good starting point, will need to go a long way before they are meaningful. In addition, they point out that these ads do not address the core gripes of most muslims... these include the American support for Israeli brutalities and its plans for muslim nation for Iraq.

I agree with the above, especially the second point. The receptive audience for these ads is probably the muslims who live in muslim countries but look up America as the land of opportunity, and given a chance will stand up in lines for hours to get a US visa. Whereas the target audience for these ads should have been muslims who despise America for its foreign policies and these ads should have atleast tried to rationalzie and defended those policies.

Showing a few muslims living in US, and enjoying a happy life free of hate, is probably too simplistic a view, for those who are willing to do harm to this country for its controversial foreign and military policies.

Faisal, you have a good point, that the target audience is not clearly defined. The problem is that when some Muslim countries use their state controlled media to promote anti-Semitism and anti-westernism (basically as a way of distracting attention from the real issues), it makes America’s job even more difficult. In Egypt, for example, they are going to run a 41 part series (the protocols of elders of Zion) during Ramzan. Which is hate filled propaganda against Jews and Israelis. What do you think Egyptians are going to get out of that?

I agree that these simple documentaries can’t do the repair to a damage that has been inflicted over a very long period of time.

My question is why should a resident of Karachi, who has no access to clean drinking water, be worried about the plight of Palestinians (and not worried about Chinese muslim who are also being persecuted)? I just bang my head with this question and I cannot figure it out for the life of me. I think media brain washes people.

what should i be sucking up to then? some vague khilafah concept? or societies where suicide bombers who kill innocent children are hailed as heroes? How about areas where people are oppressed even though there should be no compulsion in faith?

**Nobody wants to live in a disgusting society where at work they see woman as a joke and send filthy emails about the woman like she is entertainment for them. **

Versus societies where women are treated as animals? or societies where jiyalay grope and fondle women in crowded bazaars?

**And as a muslim the last place on earth i would want to live is in the heart of the enemy who uses every weapons in it possesion to destroy the ummah or did u forget u was a muslim now **

Ummah has been doing a good nuff job of destroying itself. maybe you should nto then live in pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, saudi Arabia..etc too because the authorities or influential groups have used all in their power to kill other muslims there. Or is that not as bad now. Did you happen to forget that now.

As for iran iraq who supplied the weapons and instigated it your heros the americans :2guns: **

yeah and Iran and Iraq and rest of the folks are so stupid that they would always play in the hands of anyone..utter rubbish.

You have gone on foriegn policy and international affairs angle again and again, and I can categorically show you that when it comes to foriegn policy..there are no angels..anywhere.

Lookign back at law and order, education and opportunity, services and charity. There is no better place.

Always a pleasure to hear your voice of reason rising over the din and clang of lost empires and ancient glory, not to mention ignorance and sour grapes!

Maybe someone forgot to tell the 200+ Hatians who just landed in Florida that were far better alternatives to run to!

Justice?

if all the muslim countries adopts the secular constituion like
west they would not in such position as they are now.

i think the problem with the muslims country is that they are trying to follow this secularism, which is destroying them, only way to go forward is simple by islam. now people have made these splits in islam, extremists, moderate, secular for gods sake there is only one islam. a muslim is one who follows quran and sunnah. the kafirs made these sects and splits in our religion which was pure and still is, if people just wake up. the good thats happening in the west is because they have adopted some of our qualities, such as honesty in business, etc etc.

in pakistan depending on the places you go, people do fraud, criminals etc. well if they followed islam each and every pakistan they would be sucessful you dont have to look at west, which i think is destroying itself slowly. islam is a complete religion for all times. islam gives more women rights than any western country. is womens rights to allow them to be seen as objects for perverted men to just watch, and their wives being rejected and used. for their to be men who just live with a woman without marriage then after one week make her pregnant then leave her, to be a single mother to raise children? higher divorce rates in the west. i can carry on and on. it is just sick, i cannot even call them humans they are worse than animals. unhygienic people. now is this what you want to follow to be sucessful. women in islam have been given protection, and we should regard them as precious, a woman if not supported by her husband, her father has to, then her brother. woman are like queens if they are treated in an islamic way, be gentle as it says in the quran.

i always talk about the woman issue because it is brought up so much and misunderstood in the west or by western pakistanis.

now in pakistan there is arranged marriages, this is in islam. but now what is forced marriage? this is marriage without consent from the woman getting married. in a hadith the prophet said you should ask consent from both man and women whether they want to get married because they will be living most their lives together if they are unhappy it will just be chaos. it is totally unislamic forced marriages. and muslims are practicing it! arranged marriage is where parents say this person is a good, do you want to marry him because hes got so and so qualities? you can say yes or no. you can marry somebody by your own choice.

again in pakistan woman are not allowed in many mosques. this is not in islam. women are allowed in the mosque, with separate entrance and separate facilities. it says if your wife wants to go to the mosque the husband cannot refuse even if its in the night etc.

so all these issues arise not from people who follow islam but those who do not. so if you want pakistan to be the best country follow the laws by the best person. which is allah. are we better than allah to make different laws. democracy is good like about building hospitals, you ask people, building roads, facilities that is democracy. but not that people choose laws.
