U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

I think if the US leaves Afghanistan will fall back into chaos of 1990s.

Washington (CNN) – The Obama administration is considering the possibility of removing all U.S. troops in Afghanistan after the NATO combat mission officially finishes at the end of 2014, White House officials said Tuesday.

The comments by Ben Rhodes, the White House’s deputy national security adviser, come as the Pentagon and White House mull over the number of troops that could be left in Afghanistan after 2014 to fight insurgents and train Afghan security forces.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and President Obama are scheduled to meet on Friday in Washington.

Presidents look to future of Afghanistan

Rhodes said the administration is considering a range of options, with one scenario having no U.S. troops there. The range, according to defense officials, had until recently been between 6,000 and 15,000 U.S. troops possibly remaining in the country, based on an assessment by the U.S. top commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen.

“We have an objective of making sure there’s no safe haven for al Qaeda within Afghanistan and making sure that the Afghan government has a security force that is sufficient, again, to assure the stability of the Afghan government and the denial of that safe haven,” Rhodes said.

“That’s what causes us to look for different potential troop numbers or not having potential troops in the country,” he continued.

Rhodes said there were no expectations of any deal on post-2014 troop levels during the Karzai visit, and he said it could be months before any decision was made.

The White House remains committed to ensuring Afghanistan does not return to its status as a safe haven for Al Qaeda, Rhodes said

“The president does not view these negotiations as having a goal of keeping U.S. troops in Afghanistan,” he said. “And we’re guided by the shared missions that we’ve agreed to with the Afghans, the training and equipping of their forces, and counterterrorism.”

But the United States also is insistent on legal protection for any troops in Afghanistan after 2014.

If there is no agreement on that between the United States and Karzai between now and the end of 2014, then it could lead to a similar situation for the United States as when it left Iraq.

The refusal by the Iraqi government to extend legal protections for U.S. troops after the end of the war in Iraq was a major reason the United States left the country with no residual military training force.

But Karzai has said he would like for U.S. troops to remain after the end of the NATO mission. He also has been highly critical of the troops over the years, following incidents in which U.S. forces have killed civilians.

U.S. defense officials are playing a wait-and-see game on what the Karzai visit will produce.

As one defense official told CNN on Monday about the Afghan president, “It’s Karzai; who knows what he will want on any given day?”

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

Even if their forces remain there nothing will change. The US should trust the government and help in rebuilding them as much as they can. The issue will be resolved the day Pakistan and Afghanistan's relationship improves. The two countries are tied together through history.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

What you think has happened in last 11 years of this Failed war for United states more chaos obviously.

Pakistan has been biggest loser by joining the Americans in this failure of a mission.

Pakistan has lost the buffer of the western front, around 100,000 pak troops now permanently on this border costing billions of dollars in logistics costs.

Allowing the yanks a free hand has also led to India entering the arena they are now established and entrenched in Baluchistan sowing the seeds of division along with America see US senators calling for independent Baluchistan openly such as US congressman D Rohrabacher among others!

estimates of $40 to 68 billion dollars it has cost Pakistan to finance this war which is America's war.

estimated 40,000 lives lost both civilian and army Pakistan have sacrificed.

Bottom line america is not here to solve any problem it is here to cause chaos and death in the muslim world as they always say we are invading for "our national interest" be it strategic or to grab resources.

Instead of kissing americas behind face the reality america is not your friend!

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

^ but what 'problem' did you want Americans to 'solve' for Pakistan?

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

Pakistan had no choice but to join or be declared a terrorist state.

Balochis have been dreaming of an independent country since 1947. They rose up in the 1970's after the disastrous 1971 War and then in the 2000's

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

nothing that is the whole point, the United States is the ones causing pakistan problems.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

I agree with the points made, but is Pakistan also not responsible for this mess by supporting the Taleban in the first place while they allowed Al-Qaeda to set up camp in Afghanistan?

If Pakistan is a true democracy then the Balochis indeed should be granted independence, the same can apply to Sindh or any other place in Pakistan. It should have applied to East Pakistan, and the same principle should be adhered to in India with Kashmir, Nagaland etc.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

You should ask US why they allowed AlQaida in Afghanistan in first place and why they imposed this war on Pakistan.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

pakistan did right thing in supporting its neighbors against russian aggression in the 1980's.

However what is India's excuse when they allow hindu fanatics to slaughter thousands of people in Ayodhya and Gujarat for being muslim? indians seem to have amnesia when they reminded of such terror they commit.

India will never let Kashmir go it will lead to chain reaction effect of each of its states going indepent one after the other.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

Well Al-Qaeda was patronized while they were fighting the communists which suited the West.
George Bush made a statement that the countries of the world are either "with us or against us " and as a result Pakistan decided to support the Americans and turned against the Taleban who they had previiously supported. Pakistan had a choice, whether they chose correctly is a matter of opinion.

Now back to my original point does Pakistan share some blame for this entire mess???

How about the nineties, did they do the right thing then by supporting the hardline Taleban?

This is going off topic why not start a new thread on this and it can be discussed.

I agree, and precisely for that reason Pakistan did not want East Pakistan to be seperated.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

You have to be idiot of a grand scale to think you can train people for militancy, use them, leave them alone in tatters and come back to tell them that they need to stop militancy and expect that they will throw their arms away.

Pakistan did not join US because they announced “you are with us or against us” :hehe:

U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

Well they didnt actually come to liberate afghanistan. They got what they wanted, and now will leave. They really dont care what happens after, that karzais job now as far as they are concerned.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

IMO and many others agree Pakistan joined the war under US pressure, do you disagree? I responded to your point now will you respond to mine does Pakistan share some blame in this entire matter, or is it all the “fault of foreign powers”?

I would like to know what people think about that

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

you must be naive to think when you have a nation which is like buffer on your western flank i.e afghanistan that you will start to attack them!

Unfortuantly the pakistan forces have done that since 2001 and have fallen into the american trap and paying big price for this error.

Afghanistan is brother nation of pakistan and we will unite again.

As for fanatics in India you have much worse than taliban i don't see much criticism for them from the Indian government?

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

I don't understand your post Rommel either Pakistan was right in supporting the hardline Taliban in the nineties or it was not?

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

yeah sure you don't. a muslim is brother of another muslim we support all the muslims in world be they palestinian, mujahideen in afghanistan or the muslims discriminated against in India!

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

So Pakistan supported the Muslim Taliban but not the Muslim Nothern Alliance? But then turned against them for the sake of the US.
So is Pakistan just supporting them just because they are Muslim and wouldn't do so otherwise. Thats the problem with many in the world who will only support those of their own kind over others even if they are wrong. I am not sure what religion has to do with all this.
**So why has Pakistan now turned agaist the Taliban and supports the US war against them.

**You keep mentioning India as though you are trying to change the topic, but in recent years more Muslims in Pakistan have died by the hand of Muslims in Pakistan (especially Shias) than have been killed in India. I am not here to defend Indian policy I am not so naive to take the stance that I need to defend my country/religion right or wrong. If I can see something is wrong I am willing to poin it out and not in denial.

Re: U.S. may remove all troops from Afghanistan after 2014

those are the repurcussions of Pakistan's own policy of adopting terrorist warfare was a strategy in mistaken attempts to solve border disputes which should be approached with more maturity than that.

And what exactly do they need Afghanistan as a buffer for from? and why would Afghanistan or the rest of the world accept Pakistan treating Afghanistan as a buffer state - they are their own separate nation.
