U.S Marine Kills wounded Iraqi Prisoner

Heard it on CNN Anderson Cooper 360. Popped up on Al-Jazz. See below.

Made my blood boil. CNN refused to show due to graphic nature, but the guy was a baba with a little white beard. Just the dramatic effects were pretty horrific.
I understand the baba being at the wrong place at the wrong time but this was utter disgrace of life. Very sad and may turn out to be another abu-Ghraib. :frusty2: Bad Marines.
Their stock just went down a couple of points.

US investigates Falluja killing

The US military is looking into whether an American marine in Falluja shot dead a severely wounded Iraqi insurgent at point-blank range.

Television footage shows US soldiers entering a building as injured prisoners lie on the floor.

The soldier, from the 3rd battalion of the US marines, has been removed from the field and faces possible charges.

The images were taken by an NBC reporter embedded with the US troops in the Sunni city under assault.

The BBC’s James Robbins says the incident could prove highly damaging and that the US military will need to answer key questions about whether the rules of engagement were broken during the incident.

It must explain, he says, whether wounded combatants were abandoned, or killed, illegally.

Mosque stormed

US marines have been battling with sporadic but fierce pockets of resistance inside the city. They say they have already killed 1,200 insurgents.

The images show a group of marines, armed with rifles, entering a building near a mosque.

The mosque had been used by insurgents to attack US forces, who had stormed it, killing 10 militants and wounding five.

At least three severely wounded men are seen in a room inside the building - two are slumped against one of the walls, partially covered with a blanket.

The NBC’s Kevin Sites says the wounded men had been left in the mosque after marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday.

According to Mr Sites, one of the soldiers points his rifle at the head of one of the injured, an old man. The sound of a shot is then heard.

There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon on the report.

eid gift from yankie army to muslims. kill an old wounded guy at point blank range in the mosque.

This is the civilized nations civilized soldiers. Lets see the spin on this, oughtta be interesting.

This is a good example to why people join the insurgents. Now, when this baba's son or close family member see's this video, his blood will boil and he will become a terrorist too.

‘This one’s faking he’s dead’](http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/story.jsp?story=583322)

‘He’s dead now’

The US Marine Corps launched an investigation into possible war crimes last night after video footage taken inside a mosque in Fallujah apparently showed a Marine shooting dead an unarmed Iraqi insurgent who had been taken prisoner.

The footage showed several Marines with a group of prisoners who were either lying on the floor or propped against a wall of the bombed-out building. One Marine can be heard declaring that one of the prisoners was faking his injuries.

“He’s ****ing faking he’s dead. He faking he’s ****ing dead,” says the Marine. At that point a clatter of gunfire can be heard as one of the Marines shoots the prisoner. Another voice can then be heard saying: “He’s dead now.”

The footage was obtained by a team from the American NBC network that was embedded with the Marine Corps during last week’s seven-day battle to capture the city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, which military commanders say has been a focus of Iraqi resistance. The film was then pooled and made available to other media.

On the footage that was broadcast last night, NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said that the five wounded Iraqi fighters had been left in the mosque after Marines had fought their way into that part of the city on Friday and Saturday. Ten other Iraqis had been killed in the battle for the mosque. Instead of being passed to the rear lines for treatment the wounded Iraqis were left in the mosque until a second group of Marines entered the building on Saturday, following reports that the building may have been reoccupied. Sites said that at this point one of the five Iraqis was dead and that three of the others appeared to be close to death.

In his report accompanying the images, Sites said that one of the Marines noticed that one of the wounded men was still breathing before shouting that he was “faking it”.

“The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man’s head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast,” said Sites. He added: “The prisoner did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way”. Major Doug Powell, a spokesman for the Marine Corps in Washington, told The Independent: “It’s being investigated - I can’t say much more than that. It’s being investigated for possible law of war violations. A naval criminal investigation team is looking into it.”

The footage - some of the first to show the situation inside Fallujah and the bloody nature of the street-by-street battle that has taken place there - is the latest to emerge from Iraq to contain possible evidence of war crimes perpetrated by the US military.

Other footage has shown troops shooting wounded fighters lying in open ground as well as attacks on Iraqis - some said to be civilians - by US aircraft and helicopters. This latest footage is among the most shocking given that it apparently shows without obstruction the Marine shooting the prisoner in the head at close range.

Kathy Kelly, a spokeswoman for the peace group Voices in the Wilderness, said last night that such images would “recruit more terrorists faster than they are being killed”.

“I don’t think the US is paying much attention to the Geneva Conventions any more - that is the problem. This must be investigated,” she said.

NBC said in its report that the Marine who had shot the insurgent had apparently been shot in the face the day before and that one of his comrades had been killed the previous day by a booby-trap bomb that had been placed on the body of a dead insurgent. He has been withdrawn from the field and his unit removed from the front lines, officials said.

Military experts said last night that rules of engagement prevented US troops from shooting an enemy where there was no threat being posed.

Yesterday, the Marines said they had taken more than 1,000 prisoners in the battle for Fallujah. Colonel Michael Regner, operations officer for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Fallujah, said at least 1,052 prisoners had been captured in the battle. No more than about two dozen of them were “foreign fighters”, he said. (Yet again the myth of foreign fighters explodes).

It's extremely improbable that the one and only time an Iraqi prisoner was executed by the US army was the one caught on camera.

Imagine how many other Iraqis, unarmed and posing no threat, have been murdered in cold blood by by targetted shooting by the US army and not had their deaths recorded on TV. I'm talking about such murderous villainy by the military arm of a nation that claims to not only be civilised but also claims to be a champion of human rights!

the prisoner sure is free now.

May the Martyred soul rest in peace.

And Marines (the civilized soldiers) are supposedly tough. Hmmm killing wounded combatants is one way of gauging toughness.
I quoted the following in another thread but here it is again.
“A poll taken in the first week after 9/11 57 % of people though OBL was directly tied to attacks, the same poll conducted in Aug 2002 (months after 9/11) where 9/11, terrorism and Iraq had repeatedly been blended together in words and thus in peoples minds, 53% people thought that Saddam Hussein had been “personally involved” in 911”. The same poll in August 2003 (after 1 yr ) 69% believed that Saddam Hussein had a role in attacks” This result represented one of the greatest misperceptions about terrorism the American public has ever displayed, and it was largely the consequence of efforts to manipulate public perceptions to sell a policy undertaken for other purposes”
The point being that this is a war that was basically conducted to appease the blood thirsty Americans after 9/11. I guess CNN didn't do a good job showing War coverage in Afghanistan, so had to please the american public.
Allawi "Allowme" is probably waiting for a que from White House to either condemn or justify this murder.
I would like to listen to Rumsfeld about the honorable conduct of his fine marines (pardon the sarcasm).
Rumsfeld: "This is what free people do they rape, plunder and shoot people at point blank range, You know--he-he-he--smirk--smirk this is what liberation and democracy is all about".
If this is democracy, i'd rather choose a friendly dictator like Mushie.

I saw the video play on AL-Jazeera, and it was :yukh: The old man with the white beard leaning against the wall had blood spurting out of his eyes or head, i think him and the man leaning on him were both injured and bleeding to deathslowly, cuz they were moving. There was guy lying further on, and he was moving his hands and saying something to the camera, and the one who was shot, he was injured and i think he moved a little, the soldier accused him of breathing (!!!) and faking his death, and fired a couple a shots, and the body went still.

You can see the pics in here;

i think this is why the americans didnt let any aid come through, incase someone found a different story to theirs. Freaks of nature or what.

What an unlucky Marine! If it werent for the NBC crew embedded, this would have never made the news.

I know why this is happening...Jesus must not love the Iraqis :(

no americans here?

^^ I guess they took “Bhaag Bhonsari keh Toufaan Aiya” to heart. :rotfl:
OR they are waiting for CNN, FOX and Allow-mi to put a different spin to this story so they have some ammo. I find it pretty funny how they stay away from threads that they know they cant handle.
For instance they will never quote Al-Jazz or Al-arabiya, but wont hesitate to quote the legitimate news authority CNN.

What would you have an American here say? I am glad it is being investigated as it may violate the law of armed conflict and the military needs a high standard of accountability, even during urban combat where the enemy is not following the laws of war.

I wonder, if there was also footage of a Marine attending to a wounded, booby-trapped Iraqi lying in a Mosque that blew up the American, would al-Jazeera show it on TV or would anyone here be horrified?

^ No. because that would never happen. i'm sure fox news would have show it to us by now.

Of course it wouldn't happen. Neither would these brave martyrs use civilians as human shields, mosques as forts, schools as weapons depots or aid workers as practice for body mutilation.

for once...we agree. Couldnt have said it better myself.

It works both ways. The right wing US media is whining why this Marine is being singled out. The same people will spend hours expressing their outrage over beheading of a hostage.

Stop being a hypocrite.

War is never pretty. Innocent people die. Thats why we should avoid it, as much as possible.

Now that US has gone in and invaded a country and is trying to occupy it, and is killing people there, they should realize that the people there will kill them back given the opportunity and they will also kill anyone who they think is supporting the "enemy".

My guess is that Aljazeera is showing the video again and again, and it does two things. Number 1, it helps increase the support for insurgents and beheading hostages... and number 2, it gives the message to insurgents to fight till the end, and not give up and surrender, as you will get killed either way. #2 is, obviously, far more dangerous for US occupation force in Iraq.
