Two 'Islamabads' in India

Before Pakistan made a new city its capital and named it as ‘Islamabad’, Indian subcontinent saw attempts to rename two cities as Islamabad.

Hints:

  1. Both the cities are now situated in India.

  2. One of the cities and its reference as ‘Islamabad’ is mentioned in a recently released blockbuster bollywood movie.

Any guesses?

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

I guess one city is 'Anantnag' and the movie is 'Haider'

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Thats correct. But who named it so?

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

@muqawwee123 I visited a website. It says, " In 1663, the Mujhal governor of Kashmir, Islam Khan gave the of name Islamabad to Anantnag".

Re: Two ‘Islamabads’ in India

I read that this name was given by Shahjahan, who ruled between 1627 to 1658. He demolished a temple in Anantnag (The serpent of infinity- a name of the cosmic cobra that Vishnu rests upon) and renamed it as Islamabad.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

AnantNag is another name of SheshNag, A big multiple mouthed snakes on which Bhagwan Vishnu lie
Same way, Baramulla is islamic name to VarahMula, Varah is avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu on the form of Boar when he killed Rakshas Hiranyaksh.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Read that Jahangir was quite allergic with Boar. In Ajmer he allowed for construction of a temple to Vishnu's boar's avtar, but destroyed the boar image and threw it in a tank.

BTW, I'm reading 'The Hindus - An alternate history'. I'm surprised that the book got banned in India, as it covers all these facts about destruction of temples by Mughals. I just randomly selected the chapter 'Hindus in Mughal India'.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

@muqawwee123 may be you are right as internet is not a reliable source of information perticularly social, tourism and private sites. I couldn't find any official website.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

@muqawwee123 If you have read the book tell me what is author's opinion. I read somewhere that invaders attacked temples to get gold other precious things.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Wild guess based on muslim population density

Allahabad
Hyderabad

Re: Two ‘Islamabads’ in India

For Mughals, she says that they did it for political purposes. for Aurangzeb she writes that he destroyed few temples that had political or ideological power (BTW, can there be a worship place without an ideology. Don’t know whether the writer consider religion as an ideology or not).

The writers says that apart from destruction of some temples and converting them to mosques (she gives two examples: conversion of Vishvanata temple in Varanasi and Keshava Deo temple at Mathura to mosques by Aurangzeb), Aurangzeb didn’t built any new mosques during his period.

I’m little bit confused here, as I though Lahore’s Badshahi Masjid was built by Aurangzeb.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

No these both cities were not called Islamabad.

One is Anantnag in Kashmir.. The second one is to be guessed.

Hint: The second city is one of the sacred cities of Hinduism.
@Anjul The second city has been mentioned in a song of a movie based on Mughal era.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Benaras (or Varanasi)?

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

I don't think that they did try to Islamiszed name of this city.. The city remained center of Hindu civilisation during all the Mughal era. Though there might be some incidents of sacking temples especially during Auarangzeb's era.

Let @Anjul guess the song from a movie based on Mughal era, where the holy city is mentioned.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Haridwar?

I am quickly running out of holy city names. Leaning on Chi. Hunt to supply more names.

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Mathura

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

*Vrindavan *

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Correct. Mathura was renamed as 'Islamabad' by Aurangzeb after destroying a temple 'Keshava Deo temple'. BTW, which song mentions Mathura?

ye konsa city hai? Was it also called Islamabad?

Re: Two 'Islamabads' in India

Don't know :)
