Turning Shia homes into graves | Blog | DAWN.COM

**This is new even for Pakistan. The sectarian attack in a predominantly Shia neighbourhood in Karachi, which left 48 dead and several more injured, deliberately targeted the homes of Shias.

In the past, mostly Shias and others were attacked on roads or at places of worship. They had felt safe at least in their homes. Not so much anymore. The latest attack opens a new chapter in the sectarian warfare where the religious fanatics have started to target homes. Among the dead in Karachi were several children playing in the safety of their homes. The bomb robbed the children of their lives, and the community of its sense of safety and security.**

A campaign to kill Shia professionals, including lawyers and doctors, has been on for years in urban Pakistan. Several Shia doctors have been shot dead in Karachi in the past. A renowned eye surgeon and his son were shot dead only last month in Lahore. Now Shia members of armed forces have also become targets. The same Sunday when 48 died in a car bomb attack in Karachi, Lieutenant Commander Azeem Haider Kazmi of the Pakistan Navy also succumbed to his injuries. The Shia officer was injured on February 27 most likely in a targeted attack motivated by sectarian hatred.

While the State and the society continued to collapse under sectarian violence in Pakistan, the legislators were in no hurry to act against the new incarnation of religiously motivated genocide, primarily orchestrated by the followers of a particular faction of the Sunni Islam. Only yesterday, the Senate passed a watered down version of the Anti-Terrorism Bill.

**The new law finally allows the government to move against those responsible for financing terrorist activities. The State could now freeze, seize and forfeit property of those convicted of facilitating terrorist activities. As expected, the Jamiat-e-Ulama Islam (JUI-F), a Deobandi religo-political outfit, opposed the bill. Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, JUI-F’s senator, suddenly become a libertarian fearing that the new law may unnecessarily subject ‘innocent citizens’ to harassment by law enforcement agencies. He wanted the Bill to be reviewed further instead of being passed in a ‘hurry’!

Funny, that the JUI-F Senator felt that the Bill was being rushed by the government. The Bill has been pending in the Parliament for over three years. While thousands of Shias and other religious minorities were killed in cold blood in Pakistan in the past three years, the Parliament felt no urgency to act on the Bill.** And finally when there is an attempt to pass the Bill, the Deobandi senators felt this was being done in haste.

With a few days left in the constitutional life of the Parliament, the Deobandi Senators made one last ditch effort to have the Bill die an unnatural death.

The poorly documented and mostly informal economy in Pakistan makes it easy to fund terrorist activities. Most charitable donations are not tracked by the government or by the philanthropists, thus making it easy for the funds to reach unintended destinations. In fact, estimates have suggested that billions are donated by well-meaning citizens to mosques and religious outfits with the intention to help the needy. While some of that money does reach the intended, most of it is siphoned off without a trace. It is not difficult to imagine how funds collected from mosques or from millions of charity boxes scattered around the country can make their way to the accounts of militant and terrorist outfits in Pakistan.

The Bill further allows law enforcement agencies to collect evidence in the form of audio and video recordings, wiretapping, and emails. Remember that in the absence of these provisions most accused of terrorism have been acquitted by the courts in the past because the law did not permit the use of circumstantial evidence in the courts.

Another important aspect of the legislation allows the law enforcement agencies to target banned organisations that re-emerge under a different name, but with no change in actions or strategy. The law states that if “any or all office-bearers of a proscribed organisation form a new organisation under a different name, upon suspicion about their involvement in similar activities, the said organisation shall also be deemed to be a proscribed organisation and the government may issue a formal notification of its proscription.”

The Bill also allows the government to deny passports to those suspected of terrorism, and the banks could be asked to refuse loans to such individuals. At the same time, the government can cancel weapon licenses issued to the accused in the past. And more importantly, the courts will be prevented from bailing out such accused.

Incensed by the fact that the Senate finally decided to act on the Anti-Terrorism Bill, the JUI-F senators staged a walkout in protest. I believe that the likes of JUI-F had walked out on Pakistan decades ago.

Re: Twin Blasts rock Karachi

the way MQM has behaved (constant flip flopping) during the past 5 years, I have a feeling they will lose a lot of votes in Karachi in the next elections. Zardari has clean bowled MQM for now, thats another thing that his cleverness wont win him the elections as well.

Re: Twin Blasts rock Karachi

Arabs are living in denial if they think these savages are fighting for the cause of Islam, they should do some history searching, as to how these taliban were created, who financed them and how many precious innocent lives have been taken by them in Afghanistan/Pakistan.and what is even more upsetting is there are Pakistanis living abroad who hav no clue about ground realities in Pakistan... (ive friends who have no clue about current situation in Pakistan, for them bomb blast have become a daily routine, and its just another day in Pakistan) they will show solidarity with Palestine, Syria and Burma, updates statuses/twitter stuff, but wouldnt raise awareness when it comes to Pakistan. sad I tell you!

Re: Twin Blasts rock Karachi

You are right … as long as we would have Khawarjees around, this would keep happening … unless we act to eliminate them with arguments, discussion or guns.

I also met many Khawarjees with similar views. But I always tell them that tabbarrah means nothing nor it should concern anyone, adding that it is individual's acts/deeds for which individuals would have to answer to Allah on judgment day as a person would have to answer to Allah for all deeds, be that deeds good or bad.

Though my such reply gives surprises to some, few times, facing such reply, some Khawarjees start doing ‘takfeer’ saying that Shias are kafir and that I am misguided as I should also consider them Kafir because they do tabbarah on Sahabas and there are fitwas that anyone who does Tabbarah on Sahabas is Kafir.

So, I tell them that Islam is same for all, and all will be judged on what they did according to same principle, rather those who were Sahabas would be judged more severely than those who did not get their teachings directly from Prophet (SAW).

Thus coming to tabbarrah, it is bad but could not be as bad as killing Sahabas, so if tabbarrah can make someone Kafir then killing Sahabas should make a person bigger Kafir.

Now, keeping that in mind, what he says about those Sahabas who killed or initiated killing of other Sababas like Aisha (RA), Ali (RA), Zubair (RA), Talha (RA), Imam Hasan (RA), Imam Hussain (RA), Amir Muawiah and many others who not only fought other Sahabas with sword (or became cause of such fighting) but also Killed Sahabas? Were they all Kafirs too?

What he thinks of those Sahabas who at one hand in Salah praying to Allah (in darood-e-Ibrahimi) for safety and wellbeing of Prophet (SAW) children [Imam Hasan (RA), Imam Hussain (RA), ...] and at the same time were fighting children of Prophet (SAW) in war (Jamal, Siffin) and thus were trying to harm or kill them (something completely different from what they were praying … or praying something and doing complete opposite)? … so, what were they, Munafiq, Kafir, or what?

What you think of those Sahabas who was present at the time of Kerbala, saw a non-Sahaba like Yazid Layeen who ordered humiliation and killing of Prophet (SAW)’s children, and still kept quite?

What you think of those Sahabas and their later generation who being in power (being Khalifa or their agents) made practice of tabbarah from Mosques as routine on a Sahaba and cousin of Prophet (SAW) who was also raised by Prophet (SAW) from childhood [Ali (RA)]?

Applying same principle what he is applying to Shias, all those Sahabas and their later generations must be Kafir too, right?

Occasionally I get answer from them that Allah will forgive these Sahabas … so I asked that how can he say that ‘Allah would forgive them’ as all these happened after the death of prophet (SAW) … and all who got victimised, why would they forgive?

Still, what is the source of his belief that Allah will forgive them, and if his belief is right that ‘Allah would forgive those abusers’ then why Allah would not treat any abuser of Sahabas same way, including Shias?

Actually, it is kufr (and abuse) to believe that Allah would treat two people differently who are guilty of similar crimes, rather considering one a Kafir who only abuse Sahabas (for which they have their own reasons too) and others who abused and even killed Sahabas (just for power, for concocted excuses, and some for self-defence) as respectable.

Anyhow, I ask these Kharjees that if he know of any ‘Wahi’ from Allah that came after the death of prophet (SAW) to someone he believes (like Ghulam Mirza and like) that he is saying that Allah will forgive them Sahabas who abused and killed … as all such abuses happened after the death of Prophet (SAW)?

But then, unfortunately, Khawarjees are Khawarjees, and in the end such people with retarded mind only get more and more agitated, that’s all. Only thing I hope and pray that my efforts get them out of Khawarjee trance and make them revert to Islam again.

There is hardly any hope of ending this violence as we have too many people who support these type of killings - I know many from my friends in Pakistan who thinks as these people do tabbarrah on Sahaba, it is very much justified to kill them!

we have some at our forum as well who support these activities and these killings and refuse to condemn these monsters by take their names…

Re: Twin Blasts rock Karachi

Wow, and the Imam didnt stop them???
And here we blame pundits for taking over the gods and keeping strong hold on society.

I am proud of you though, you just had a personal Rosa Parks moment.

Re: Twin Blasts rock Karachi

You are right, but it is not entirely their fault. Fault lies with Muslim society who has given the rein of Islam (religion) to most incapable idiots in society, and even after that, do not even dare to challenge them or engage them in hard logical talks backed by Quran, rather take everything what these retards give them at face value. This is going on since long time, resulting in various spurious writings and beliefs in Islam (that one can easily discard if one uses a bit of intelligence when following religion).

Just think: The trend in most families (since ages) is that, only mentally inferior, incapable and retarded children are sent to take up religious education and use that education to earn their living (become Imam of mosque, Quran-teacher, religiously respectable, or religious scholars). Most intelligent or even slightly capable children are pushed into worldly rewarding education for earning their living (though, due to media explosion and trend of spending more and more on religion, these mentally retards have also started earning a lot and becoming rich influential irrespective of their mental capability).

Anyhow: This trend has resulted in an army of retards who became Imams of mosque, religious teachers, and some even acclaimed religious scholars. Now we have situation where people who could not even clean their bottom properly are religiously guiding (rather ruling) unfortunate army of further retards who are incapable to even learn basics of any education, leave Islam.

You talk to them sense and you would know their mental capability. Most could not even give you one logical answer for anything, or would not be able to defend their beliefs facing questions. Only thing they would do is avoid questions or defend their beliefs with quotations or saying that belief is unquestionable and blind (though in reality it is not belief that is unquestionable and blind, but it is they who are incapable, misguided, and blind).
