This Shoaib Malik controversy is proving to be a Lahore-Karachi duel. This episode will not and should not end just here. Listed are my thoughts:
- Malik will be barred from playing cricket for a specified time period...ICC rules
- Match fixing allegations must be investigated. How can you believe a guy who willingly throws a match? How do we know what is the real motive?
- Was the Lahore cricketing administration in anyways involved?
- Were the sponsors worried when they realized no Lahore, means no more public support?
- Why did the disciplinary committee deliver their conclusion without consulting Karachi Manager/Captain?
- Did Lahore do a La'Lahore?
- How was Karachi Zebra's to be blamed for the stupidity of Sialkot?
- Is a penalty of Rs10,000 sufficent for Malik's horrendous mistake?
- Who constituted the disciplinary committee? And, what rules were they following in declaring Lahore Eagles the victor?
- WHERE IS RASHID LATEEF?

Malik should not be banned. He was responding to biased umpiring earlier in the tournament by the umpires which was favoring Lahore. Just because Lahore is the home team, it does not justify umpires being biased in their favor. Malik should have had enough sense to not admit to it though. Everyone would have figured out he did it on purpose. Many players have tried such antics in international cricket but have never admitted to it and thus were never penalized.

There's biased umpiring everywhere. That doesn't mean you should throw matches. In West Indies, Pakistan will face one of the most biased umpires in the world (in ODI's at least, since the Tests have 2 neutral umpires). That doesn't mean Pakistan should throw the match in protest. Case in point: Pakistan lost the 1987 and 2000 series in WI because of umpires. The captains Imran Khan and Wasim Akram never blamed it on the umpires, but tried their best to win the games.
Can anyone who actually saw the Lahore/Sialkot game tell us exactly how bad the umpiring was?

What do you think of Steve Waugh who has tried such antics numerous times? He never admitted to it, but was he ever banned even though he didn’t admit it? I agree with everyone that Malik was stupid to do it. But please do look at the other side of the coin as well.

There are no two sides of the coin here, case is very simple. You cannot throw a match. Period. This is against PCB, ICC laws and violates basic norms of society and more importantly raises numerous questions to the purpose of such an act. Think of it this way. What happens to the 20/20 tournament? Fine, there were some biased decisions, we all agree umpiring was sub-standard and biased. After this episode, any team can get up and say well its all fixed and we do not recognize these results. CHAOS. UNREST. Breakdown of discipline breeds further indiscipline.
Malik has not only smeared his own name, he has implicated the entire Pakistani cricketing fraternity. What will the foreign press say now? These Pakis throw matches just cause they feel like it? And, there administrators use that as a pretext to throw out the winner and promote their own team.
Wah jee wah, baree izzat hogee saree dunya mein..thanks to Malik..stupid stupid thing to do. He was no ordinary player, ppl like him cannot afford to amke such mistakes cause his single act refelcts on the entire Pak team and the nation. Think about that..

I cannot believe people are bringing up lahore karachi issue for no reason at all. In lahore-sialkot match, both teams were penalized for 12 runs because they didnt finish the required overs in 80 minutes. How hard is it to understand?
And for those who think that no lahore no crowd, should have watched the last mach because it was the highest crowd attendance for 20 cup even when there wasnt any team from lahore.

He made a point and didn't do it without a reason. I'm sure the umpiring must have been really horrible in the last game because I don't think Malik has the character that would do such a thing unless he is really p*ssed off.

^ Umpiring was alright but refereeing was controversial (or as Sialkot team claims) as they lost a match which they actually won.

What are you talking about? Sialkot screws up, and Karachi Zebra’s who should have gone into the next round gets kicked out and Lahore Eagles goes into the next round, what do you think really happened here? Why should’nt ppl ask this question? this was the most blatant form of lahori parochialism one has ever seen and that too on international TV. I will have no problem in admitting Iam wrong, but on the evidence currently available, any sane, fair minded person wud also jump to the same conclusion. How can the team who has nothing to do with match throwing, has won its match has the highest poits, first has its points docked for Sialkoti screw up and then is told that Lahore is the most qualified team to go forward, even though Karachi whipped their asses…go figure.

*Well, exactly Shoaib’s point. The change of decision was made just to favor the home team. That is not fair to any of the teams playing in the tournament, and Malik took a stand to that. Look at what they did now Saby, they overturned the decision of the match and made Lahore go through even when Lahore didn’t even qualify! *

Malik today, Rodney Marsh and Dennis Lillee a good 25years ago placed a 5Pound bet against their team, as a joke, fun sake cause the odds were so huge. England won that match because of Ian Botham, Rod Marsh & Lillee made a lot of money, which they were willing to return. But both were found guilty and banned for violation of team discipline and bringing the game in disrepute. Both gentleman were class acts, totally committed Ozzies who were straight as an arrow and did apologize. Point being, nobody is bigger than the team or the game, and the bigger you get, your responsibility multiplies exponentially to act professionally and honestly.

fguru, unfortunately what ur saying is right. this whole lahore episode is killing the atmosphere. the organizers got slapped on their face with this chaos. they can shove this whole tourney in their behind now. I hope the teams in the final concead the matches against Eagles. So organzier’s darling lift the cup and be happy.
This is the ugly side of Pakistan cricket. Favouritism.
Malik, Stallion, Zebras and Organziers…all screw up in this situation.

Are you forgetting that BOTH Sialkot AND Lahore were awarded 12 runs because the opposition didn’t finish their overs in the given time? Where’s the favoritism in that?

Yes you have a point here. Karachi should not have been penalized for Sialkot’s act but Sialkot should have been disqualified. And this probably would’ve meant that both Karachi and Lahore would’ve qualified for the semis.
