Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
i agree with Lajawab, he prob meant it out of respect.
I interact with a few indians here, and their "tum" is equivalent to our "aap"

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Nah....he definitely was not from India.
His name is Farhan and I'm still ticked about it. I didn't realize it bothered me this much.
If he's not a native urdu speaker then he most definitely is a punjabi speaker. Regardless though, I have been to most desi places in Toronto and nobody, but nobody has ever spoken to me that way.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Then I bet he must be from Old Delhi...That area is mostly Qasaai and Bhattiyaray folks...
All Muslims, but ones to avoid unless you know how to deal with them...:D They have nasty tempers and even nastier tongues...
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
okay....what are bhatiyaray?
Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’
Bawarchis for various occasions…You know, like Shaadis, Valimas, Aqeeqas e.t.c…Capiche?
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
got it... thanks
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
I presume the whole digging-into-his-birthplace discussion is because in some communities using "tum" is considered a respectable way, and the other option is "tu". There is no "aap" there. I wonder if living in more civilized communities for a while, wouldn't they figure out the obnoxiousness of addressing complete strangers as "tum"?
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
thanks Faisal....these folks had me thinking that I'm uptight.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Well.... you may just be :D but that really isn't going to help us here ..... :D
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Muzna, if I were you I would have called the manager and complained. This idiot should address all his CUSTOMERS as AAP no matter what gender or age!
Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’
Inter Services Intelligence.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Faisal...if I'm uptight....you know your reputation isn't gonna get any better.....;)
funguy....yeah, I really should have done it right away. Now it's stale....maybe I'll go back there and let him make the mistake again.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
I guess there'll be one more person claiming unemployment checks, once Muzna is done with him.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
See....now I can't do it.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
I don't think he will be fired for that. Not from a Pakistani restaurant. He should probably thank her for teaching him a lesson early in life.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
I know one thing, had he talked like that to a close female relative of mine, I would have put the nihaari waala chamcha up his ....chal rehn dai.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
Muzna,
I am not convinced it's something worth starting a fight over. World is full of rude and uncouth people; how many of those idiots are you going to take on?
Starting a fight next time only jeopardizes the quality of the food they prepare for you -- waiters, cooks are notorious for settling scores with difficult patrons.
Take your business elsewhere. Give the manager a call and inform him why you are doing this. Tell all your friends and family about the bad service at that restaurent.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
One at a time.
Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'
I think all women should be addressed as tum because men are superior to women. Women should kiss the path where men walk. :D
men should be addressed with utmost respect by women.
I like simple thigns and that is the simplest solution to tum vs aapp
Here tim, tu, teri for females
aap, sir, and just kiss the path where forget men where I walk (even simpler).
