True Face of India

Re: True Face of India

Not to beat a dead horse, but I would make this one point. To be fair southie, this im sure is the response any intelligent educated Hindu would give. But what of uneducated and superstitious Hindus?

There are stories passed down from elders in our village of Hindus who would walk on opposite sides of the road in order to avoid their shadows mingling with those of Muslims. Or of those Hindus who if you went to their homes, would serve their Muslim guests on Palm leaves or the like and reserve the plates for their Hindu guests. Or they would fill their buckets on opposite side of the well to avoid mingling with the Muslims. So to many Hindus, perhaps not as well versed even their own faith, Muslims were often and perhaps still are considered to be among the lower caste, if unofficial.

There are those who draw up these fantasies of pre Partition India, as if we all lived together as brotherly as conjoined twins, but Religious discrimination was and is a very real thing.

Still though, you are right, baggage from the caste system is still prevalent among Pakistanis, especially among villages where everyone knows everyone else s family background. But beyond the villages, the anonymity of the city means many otherwise low caste clans etc do relatively well...

Re: True Face of India

Med,

You are absolutely correct. There are biases that are handed down from generations. Especially in villages, lower caste folks are still discriminated against. As for the shadow part, my grandfather told me that was the case ~ 50 years ago. Things are not that bad now. Some folks (like my mother) are still stuck in the past. When you come home from the barber, you ae supposed to take a bath without touching anything in the house. Others are moving ahead with the times.

Especially in cities, anyone can go into any temple. We all rub shoulders with each other in trains buses etc.

I am not very knowledgeable about pre-partition days. But iy was and is still accepted that muslims make the best of friends and worst of enemies!)

IMO, at the root level, discrimination needs to be rooted out. That is the one thing that can hold us back. With education, other problems (even Kashmir) will solve themselves.

From reading your posts, I have known you as a progressive amongs Pakistanis. And have always respected your views (though I would like some softening of views in certain topics :))

Take care.

Mukhobhai,

Our views may never converge. But I have noticed you are always polite - that is an excellent trait.

We also read and heard about Hindu-Muslim discrimination. It is said that before partition, on Railway station there were two different types of water 'Hindu Pani' & 'Muslim Pani'.

As far as my personal experience is concerned, my grandparents living in a small town in Sind, shared common wall with a Hindu Family. Until late 80's there were around 20 houses of Hindus, who were living in harmony with Muslims. My Grandmom used to sent siwayyan on eid to the Hindus and they also sent sweets on their Diwali & Holi. When in late 80's most of the Hindu families migrated to India for one or other reasons, we still remember the sadness appearing on our elders' faces on their departure.

Agreed 100%. Koi bhi doodh main dhula hua nahin. Bad things do happen on both sides of the border, we should try to resolve the matters instead of just criticising each other.

Re: True Face of India

Holy crap. All that goes on in Pak?
It doesn't look very good, does it?
Thanks for bringing the delusional Pakistanis down to earth and giving them a bitter reality check. :)
The OP didn't realize how incendiary the thread title sounds.
(Maybe 'One Face' instead of 'True Face' would have been more digestable.)
In the same vein, I almost puked from the hate on the Bharat-Rakshak website
when someone quoted it for reference in some other thread in the past.
Don't know if there are any Pakistanis on that forum for balance or if they are even allowed.

Re: True Face of India

Looks like you had really nice grandparents! and some cool elders where you lived! Thanks for posting - it really warmed my heart.

Re: True Face of India

Thanks for being understanding.
I dont know who reference BRF on this forum, i havent come across it.
for me PDF and BRF are "One Face" of our society which shouldnt creep in to GS.

but i also think that mods have been very generous lately. back in the days self made propaganda thread titles werent allowed, neither were any articles without discussable comments. but now a days, anything goes.

Re: True Face of India

Re: True Face of India

i am not a big fan of congress party but Rahul Gandhi gives me some hope.
He is 41 but has never asserted his last name to get the prime spot in the govt. He is working hard to deserve the post instead of inheriting it.
he is disliked by the old party members because he is forming a new team around himself. He has created a team of educated mostly MBAs from foreign universities with work experience to be his closest advisers and to hold positions if he comes in power.
He brings new ideas and wants to change the way the country politics works.
if he is successful in guiding the country as he plans then i see a bright future. otherwise it will be same old politics again and again.
