This is a very common mode of meeting ppl inthe desi society. But I simply dont find the logic behind it, coz all the gal does is serve tea n all the guy does with his mom is gap at the girl, n all the mom does is ask the gal a few retarded questions n all the father does is nod to everything.

and the only thing I found weird was that my mom was WANTING me to wear Gold instead of fake jewelry. Oh yeah and my dad was like “you’re looking gorgeous”…which kinda should have tipped me off right there.

Last I heard recently, his mother has been hounding him to propose to me Desis, I swear.

My biggest issue was the expectations of some people who for some odd reason thought that I would marry their daughter, and when that did not happen they were really pissed at my folks. there are actually 2-3 people who are mad about it. dunno whats their deal.

my take is that perhaps u seemed forth coming or showed some positive signs of interest which led them to have hopes which eventually didnt materilize. I think u were just being freindly n they misuderstood them as the divine signs.

I love this thread. Tell me some stories. I only shared one, I have been rejected, dejected and de-selected on a number of times.

Story Number #2. This family wanted my family to have a marriage between me and their daughter, Well I thought they meant the other daughter (the youngest) so I tld them well while we are on this subject can I skip daughter #2 and go for daughter #3. That family still doesnt talk with us and I still got my ass kicked by my grandmother at age 25.

I have been doing this since I was 23. Lets see how heated this thread gets andI may share a few more stories, I have a total of let me count hang on. 1=Lahore 2=Nowshera 3= Islamabad 4=CA 5= Lahore again. Hmm I think thats it.

yeah those r the most absurd ones, they just sit there, n barely manage to open there mouth to sip tea.

not only did he stare at me…its like we were playing a game where you stare each other out at one point…i lost…he wasnt much to look at (ouch), but he also replied every question with a one word answer, then he’d go silent, and im a talker, i cannot stand silence, so i spoke more, i swear i repeated myself at least 4 times. I dont get why he did that…

lol.. i’m sure u took him by surprise, he wasnt prepared for the questions lady, he only came to CHECK u out. U kept intereputing his thoughts while he was trying to envision how u would look standing next to him, whether u were a worthy trophy 2 b won.

Thats what i find offensive, i’m not aginst halal hook-ups, but please can v have an intellgent conversation to c if v’r on the same wavelength.

I have found it helps to really get to know the other person if you meet each other in a non-traditional environment although I agree its not very common and most parents wouldnt agree to that.
Everything else aside, I met my fiancee at his place with both our families present but in a very informal way and I was hooked seeing him making chai for us

Vertical: The story #2 happened in Nowshera. And no it was not on looks either, the middle daughter was like a potato, like a like a walking huge dead body, the number three was lively playing footsie with me (and I am not kidding). They served tea in the dining room, it was really cool, she was young too. Damn.

I had only one guy come w/ the whole family and it ended up looking like the family was more interested in getting their girl hooked up to my bro than the other way around. When the guy let out a huge sigh at the thought of fasting during the summer months in Ramadan, I had to keep myself from laughing and knew he was definitely not my type
My husband told me he was thankful that I brought him some orange juice when he came to meet me as he had gotten car sick and airsick on the way to our house.
If I have any daughters, I would never want to put her through those “drawing room” sessions though

vertical i guess i have to be completely open to explain the situation. I was not even being friendly. Aside from the fact that they are related to me we had no common interest, i was not attracted to them, we had nothing to talk about

The girls in question were relatives. I had been expicitly stating a few things to everyone since I was in college.

1. I will not marry in the family
2. I will not marry someone in Pakistan, unless she has spent atleast a few years out west.

I hardly talked to the girls in question. They were in Pakistan where I went 4 times in 10 years, saw these girls maybe 1 or 2 times at some family event while I was there. I csnt recall when was the last time I actually had any conversation with them. we did not write letters, emails, faxes..no phone calls.

Now if somone is going to take that as some sort of indication of interest then what else is there to do. My parents did not show interest and when asked about whattheyhad thought about my marriage they had always stated, its up to me.

the girl’s mother was very upset at my mom, and heck recently even this girl said something..

the same gang were then after my brother..he actually got it even worse there were a few girls in his age group, and again they were all in Pakistan..where he went every few years at best.

being born in a khandan where there are girls unable to find their mates is a pain in the ass, there are some expectations that the guys in the khandan will marry them, and if they dont they are made to look like the bad guys. aray bhai why is it my responsibility.

before I get slammed for bashing pakistani girls, the second case was in the UK, dad's friend who I had barely seen in ages since I was in the US. he has daughters, i knew them as a kid but we have not stayed in touch, i dont even remember the names or what they look like.

He was pissed at my dad when i got married, because my dad did not even consider his daughters. I mean what the hell..
