Ok, so no 'destroying the dress' not even a formal one let alone your bridal (I hope 'malta' has reading this but she is no longer here anymore, I guess :(). The idea of keeping the dress and still have some fun pics is also understandable. We always want to get dressed up in finery and look like a million dollars for pics but why do brides who actually go for TTD sessions think wallowing in mud and have insane pics taken is such a big deal?
i really think the tradition is for the gora brides who wore a $100-$300 white bridal gown...the gown being all white and pristine...all the mud/water/whatever shows up better on the white gown..looks even more disturbing..hence the hype.
gosh i am scared to even iron mine...
I can't believe that in this day of "going green" and recycling people are willing to trash something that can bring such tremendous joy to a poor, unfortunate soul.
I have worn my wedding lehnga at least three times since my wedding and because it still looks almost unworn (at least the lehnga does) I have put it away for my daughter. She can look at it when she is old enough to make a decision and she can either keep it or donate it with her own hands.
I would have preferred to wear ammi's wedding outfit for my nikah and then worn a more modern outfit for my reception and valima but she didn't save it.
I just can't see something be wasted or even stored away when someone could have used it.
^^hehe you and I have the same thinking...two of my phuphos had worn my mom's gharara on their respective wedding days...2 years ago maine bohot bhaag daud karke unnse vapis hathaayaya meri mama ka gharaara...so that when time for my rukhsati comes I can wear it...now m updating it and wearing on my weddding
And um....
doesnt wearing a dress that's burning while ure IN the dress mean that YOU will burn? or is the fotographer so good taht they can prevent that? :D
LOL i was thinking the same thing. the first picture made me laugh. i personally would never do such a ridiculous thing.
My gori friend recently got married and she for some God forsaken reason went to this marsh with it on and took pics in the water/mud with it...the pics were amazing....but i thought she was crazy!!!! I don't plan on doing that in my future!

chanda, no, gora dresses are definitely not $100-$300!! they usually run anywhere from $1000 to $4000.

i dont think she meant that all gora dresses are that price, but people who did choose to spend $100-$300 on their wedding dress :) they definitely exist, David's Bridal has $99 sales all the time.
^ i know but a lot of the trash the dress pictures don't look like david's bridal dresses :)
i mean the photography session alone is more than that, so i think for gori brides, trashing the dress isn't based on how costly your dress was- its more like a shot at a fun, unconventional, artsy session with a dress you'll never wear again!
Trash the Dress is not just a gora thing. Take a look at the "Bless the Dress" group on flickr (flickr . com / groups / bless-the-dress), or google for "Trash the Saree".
It has a stupid name, that's for sure, and some people do go to rediculous extremes. But done thoughtfully I think the concept works well.

I think it's the wonders of Photoshop - they take a picture of the bride in the dress, then they put the dress on a manequin and set it alight - then skillfully merge the two images together. But still, this has to be one of the stupidest images ever.
Dancing in the rain however... yep, that's a different matter.
