I was thinking about this. In times past, a person's wedding attire was probably the fanciest that they would get to wear in their lifetime. Could this custom have more to do with dressing up the deceased in their finest finery rather than dressing them up as a bride/groom specifically?
That also may be the case. The way they carry dead body on a charpai with decorated posts (in rural Sindh), cover of Ajrak (which is alsro colorful) and rose petals all indicate this. Even the green chadar carrying Quranic verses and put on dead body from home to graveyard is also artistic.
