Traditional clothes...

Wanted to ask everyone what they think the “traditional” Shalwar kameez symbolises?

Also I wanted to ask all u lovely women: how does the shalwar kameez make u feel when u wear it compared to when u wear English clothes? Do u feel different? do u feel people perceive u differently? are u comfortable wearing the shalwar kameez in a western society? Maybe it make u feel like u have multiple identities e.g when u wear English clothes u may feel that u fit in better in a certain crowd etc.

your answers will really help. Thanks.x

Re: Traditional clothes...

I am super comfortable when I wear shalwar kameez so that's different. It makes one feel very feminine and pretty...more so than jeans or pants would.

I am sure people do a double take but I don't care...I will not go out of my way to not wear it if I have to be seen by non-desies. Usually I get compliments and even if I don't...I love wearing shalwar kameez!

Peoples' perception is based on how you carry yourself CE. The clothes don't wear you...you wear the clothes.

Re: Traditional clothes...

T-shirt and shalwar.....among the best comfort clothes EVERRRR!!!

Re: Traditional clothes…

My outfit of choice tonight…:k:

Re: Traditional clothes...

I feel different in different crowds, and enjoy dressing according to the crowd im in, also weather plays a big part.

In UK when its freezing (most of the time) i wouldnt consider wearing shalwar kameez cs there is nothing that is that thick that will keep me warm, so i tend to look like michelin man with layers and layers.

Come the summer or spring i love shalwar kameez, in fact its my all time favourite outfit, as i wear a lot of formal clothes for work, i enjoy being dressed in desi, and i def do feel a lot more feminine, also i feel i carry off shalwar kameez much better than any other attire.

Re: Traditional clothes...

pakistan, culture of pakistan

Re: Traditional clothes...

I LOVE shalwar kameez and long shirts which are in trend nowadays!! AT home, mostly i wear traditonal casual wear! they are just so comfy and feminine!
I wish i could wear them to school! i get tried of these jeans, skirts! :( ...

like blessed said it symbolises Pakistani culture, our values, our rich culture!!
I enjoy wearing our traditional clothes and take pride in representing Pakistani culture in a western country!

Re: Traditional clothes...

shalwar kameez is for dubli patli girls.

Re: Traditional clothes...

Tell that to our punjabi actresses ...

Re: Traditional clothes…

And not for the motti ones? :hmmm:

Girls who are on the heavier side look so much better in a shalwar kameez than in jeans shirts.

Re: Traditional clothes…

They look ridiculous in western cloths. In shalwar kameez (normal decent shalwar kameez, not the super tight vulgar looking one) they look :k:

Re: Traditional clothes…

errrmmm I didn’t mention jeans and Tees.

Re: Traditional clothes…

OMG just imagine Firdos Ashiq Awan in Jeans and T-Shirt :bummer:

Re: Traditional clothes…

I know you didn’t mention it.
I used it as an example. The heavier desi girls look more elegant (in my opinion) in shalwar kameez (or kameez trouser) than in other garments.

lol

Re: Traditional clothes…

I don’t. A lot of people have told me that.

Re: Traditional clothes...

Peace Dil Pakistan

Actually I think long skirts make larger people look better ... If they wear tight jeans then it is important to cover at least until the middle of the thighs ... Otherwise I think larger women are at a disadvantage in wearing any kind of clothing, but in that respect thin women too have little to boast about ... Middle path is the best ... most decent is to hide the shape of the body whether it is for larger or thinner women ... I guess shalwar kameez can do that, but the design of shalwar kameez has changed these days the shalwar rests at the chin and the kameez might as well be a blouse and the galas are so open they might as well be cardigans and the arms are so tight they might as well be sleeveless ... oh wait a sec they are sleeveless these days - they might as well be a banyan.

With such little left of the shalwar kameez these days the only ones who don't look like film actresses are the thin girls who can get away wearing shalwar kameez looking elegant short of looking sexually luring. Any woman with a curve or two will show more of her womanhood - making her look desperate. I think that is the contention here.

Re: Traditional clothes...

I think the balance that girls from desi/Muslim backgrounds want is to look elegant without looking like tarts ... for thin unshaped women this is easier to achieve ... with the current availability of desi clothes

On the flip side if the less thin girls wear the older designs they will be branded as out of touch with fashion ... so they have no choice but to resort to other clothing styles.

Re: Traditional clothes…

:k:

I was talking about the decent shalwar kameez though. Most of the larger desi women i know look decent and good in their shalwar kameezes. Because their shalwar kameezes are decently made (no huge gallas etc).
But i understand what you mean.

Re: Traditional clothes...

Oh wow, I was stuck on one of my creative modules and opened up this thread and I must have completely forgotten about it......

For my final piece I decided to take a pic of my two wardrobes.....In one I have Pakistani clothes and in the other I have English and I spoke about how like my wardrobe my personality is also split into two parts and I haven't yet found the third space to mix both cultures together. For example I find I cant share certain things from my Pakistani identity with my English friends becoz they cant relate to it, and vice versa. well might sounds bizarre but I managed to get a first! Ahumdulillah!

For the people who feel comfortable wearing the shalwar kameez , good for u haan, it's definitely a sign of confidence and shows u r totally comfortable with ur identity.xxx

Re: Traditional clothes...

Disturbing.
You have way too much of an interest in anything women and your your objectified view is sickening.
