Torture at Abu Ghraib (MERGED)

Sickening.

TV shows US troops abusing Iraqis](BBC NEWS | Middle East | US acts after Iraq prisoner abuse)

A US television station has broadcast pictures allegedly showing US soldiers abusing Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.
CBS TV says it has “dozens” of pictures - taken by US troops - showing prisoners being subjected to a wide range of maltreatment.

Many of the pictures show American troops looking on in apparent approval.

The Army announced last month that 17 soldiers had been suspended over the allegations of abuse of prisoners.

The group includes a brigadier general.

Six are facing court martial.

‘Appalled’

Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told CBS the army was “appalled” by the behaviour of its soldiers.

Gen Kimmitt, the deputy head of coalition forces in Iraq, said the suspected abusers “let their fellow soldiers down”.

But, he said, the few suspects were “not representative of the 150,000 soldiers that are over here… Don’t judge your army based on the actions of a few,” he urged Americans.

**CBS says the pictures it obtained show a wide range of abuses, including:

Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals

A dog attacking a prisoner

Prisoners being forced to simulate having sex with each other **

A detainee with an abusive word written on his body.
The prison where the abuses are alleged to have taken place was a notorious torture centre during the Saddam Hussein era.

Bob Baer, a former CIA operative with extensive Iraq experience, told CBS: “If there [was] ever a reason to get rid of Saddam Hussein, it’s Abu Ghraib [prison].”

No guidance

The station spoke to one of the six soldiers charged, Sergeant Chip Frederick - a reservist whose full-time job is as a prison officer in the US state of Virginia.

Sgt Frederick said he and his fellow reservists had never been told how to deal with prisoners, or what lines should not be crossed.

“We had no training whatsoever,” he said.

“I kept asking my chain of command for certain things… like rules and regulations. And it just wasn’t happening,” he said.

He said he never saw a copy of the Geneva Conventions - which govern the treatment of prisoners - until after he was charged.

The Army investigation confirmed that reservists at Abu Ghraib had not been trained in Geneva Convention rules.

Chain of command

The general who supervised the prison for the US Army, Janice Karpinsky, is among those facing charges.

CBS said an Army investigation had concluded that her “lack of leadership and clear standards” led to problems in Abu Ghraib and three other prisons for which she was responsible.

The military police officers have been charged by the US Army with crimes ranging from assault and maltreatment to indecent acts against prisoners.

The soldiers in question reportedly were assisting interrogators from US intelligence agencies.

Last month, when the six military police officers were charged, an Army spokesman said the alleged crimes involved fewer than 20 prisoners and happened around November and December.

The charges include conspiracy, dereliction of duty, cruelty, maltreatment, assault and indecent acts with another.

Photos reveal US abuse

A US television station has broadcast pictures showing US soldiers abusing Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, reports the BBC.

CBS TV says it has “dozens” of pictures - taken by US troops - showing prisoners being subjected to a wide range of maltreatment. Many of the pictures show American troops looking on in apparent approval, the BBC said. The army announced last month that 17 soldiers had been suspended over the allegations of abuse of prisoners. The group includes a brigadier general. Six are facing court martial, the BBC said.

According to CBS, the network had held on to the story for two weeks following a Pentagon request but decided to air it after photos began to circulate.

Some pictures show uniformed US soldiers posing with naked Iraqi prisoners in various positions. One had naked male prisoners kneeling on each other in a pyramid with a female US soldier behind them.

Other pictures show naked Iraqis positioned to simulate sex with each other, a detainee with wires attached to his genitals and a dog attacking an Iraqi prisoner. In most of them, the Americans are seen laughing or gesturing approval.

According to CBS, the military investigation started after a soldier received the photos from a friend and gave them to his commanding officers.

CBS said the army investigation found that one Iraqi prisoner was made to stand on a box with his head covered and wires attached to his hands, and told if he fell off the box, he would be electrocuted.

The deputy commander of the coalition forces in Iraq, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, said he was appalled and that the entire army was let down by the actions of a few soldiers.

General Janice Karpinsky, who was responsible for the prison, is among those facing charges, and CBS said an army investigation had concluded that her “lack of leadership and clear standards” led to problems in Abu Ghraib and three other prisons for which she was responsible.

b*******s

Absolutely disgusting. Makes me sick. I just checked out the BBC World News website and didn't see anything about this story.

If it is true then the soldiers should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. assholes.

I said the same thing when a returning British soldier was shopped for getting similar photos developed over here. It's not hard to figure out the reason why - soldiers usually come from the most deprived areas and far from being heroes are probably not too dissimilar from football yobs in reality.

They aren't called grunts for nothing.

Where are the Human Right activists in US? US has not right to talk about Human Right abuses.

What the heck are you talking about? As wrongful as these acts are, CBS is an American broadcast channel. The story also says suspension of many soldiers involved and and condemning words from a General and further investigation.

Girls just can’t browse the web properly :smokin:

Though I found the following part of the story to be interesting

*Sgt Frederick said he and his fellow reservists had never been told how to deal with prisoners, or what lines should not be crossed.

“We had no training whatsoever,” he said.

**“I kept asking my chain of command for certain things… like rules and regulations. And it just wasn’t happening,” he said.

He said he never saw a copy of the Geneva Conventions - which govern the treatment of prisoners - until after he was charged.

The Army investigation confirmed that reservists at Abu Ghraib had not been trained in Geneva Convention rules. ***

Why on earth would the US Army not provide to the soldiers tasked with holding prisoners the international rules and regulations stating how the prisoners could legally be treated?

Sorry MS. I went into the Middle East section and got distracted by the Saudi Fashion pictures.

This was on 60 minutes yesterday. The most disturbing thing about the report were those otherwise normal looking folks who could be our neighbors and co-workers acting with a total disregard for humanity.

Well no, you're wrong there. It was a gori who after all called in the police when she saw what was in the squaddies film so don't label everyone with the same brush. British soldiers are mostly drawn up from neanderthal areas...like Middlesbrough for example...so what do you expect?

Screw the G. Conventions. Even an 8 year old doesn't have to read the Geneva Conventions to figure out that attaching wires to a person's genitals isn't appropriate. It's not about international Conventions or statutes - any normal individual would have to realize the acts described in the CBS report would never be considered human if they were performed on animals let alone humans.

If your chain of command wasn't giving you proper rules and regulations, then you use the common sense that God has given you. What's next - my chain of command didn't tell me how to use a washroom so i peed everywhere? Good grief you're a soldier. Use your common sense, you idiot.

Funny (or sad?) thing is, this is what would have happened under the Hussein regime - maltreatment and abuse of prisoners. Nothing has changed but the name of the abuser.

Shameless war criminals!

I wonder what the spin will be this time from the war mongers? The excuses and justifications for these American abuses of human rights in Iraq?

Are you kidding!

Anybody who does that kind of thing should be f**king hung.

Make an example of these jerks, lock 'em up forever, and throw them into the nastiest military prison you can find.

Thats not what we stand for, and not the way we do things. They ought to give a medal to the soldier who turned them in..... Not to mention compensating those who were harmed.

*****s. Like somebody has already pointed out soldiers are usually from the deprived areas similar to football yobs, lol it’s true they are usually high school dropouts so you can’t expect better from them but it isn’t just limited to them, even a so called civilised educated gora would do something like that for fun, when you’ve no fear of getting punished from a higher authority whether that be Allah or the commanders over them you’ll just go ahead and have a laugh.
[/QUOTE]

agree.....US should hire only educated lads from higher society as soldiers....I don't know why they turn down Harvard graduates. US army sucks they don't treat humans like humans..they should do what that Lt Gen did in Wazirsatan..garland the terrorists and ask for pardon when you arrest them.

ps: these guys should be court marshalled and punished to the fullest extent of law.

No - something else has changed. Under the Hussain regime the abusers would have got away scot free. At least now, they are going to be disciplined. Pretty substantial change wouldn't you say?

True. Thanks to CBS for highlighting this. It does make you question whether this is occurring somewhere else as well where a CBS camera lens hasn't managed to make it inside.

Speaking of CBS cameras…
