Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

LAHORE – Since gruesome gun-attack on country’s youngest girl education campaigner, Malala Yousafzai in Swat has angered the entire nation; it has closed the doors for any possible peace talks between Islamabad and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) once and for all.

Highly-placed military sources confided to The Nation on Wednesday that the desperate attack in which Taliban elements openly targeted a teenage girl, has irritated the top commanders in the Pakistan Army, apart from the political leadership.

According to them, the military strike in North Waziristan Agency (NWA), the safe haven of Taliban and al Qaeda militants as portrayed in Western media, is imminent notwithstanding the country’s Armed Forces are already overstretched.

The authorities are also assessing the situation after the Army operation is launched in the NWA as the brutal assault has sparked outrage across the country, where people are demanding strong action against the Taliban, urging the Pak Army to strike against the terrorists wherever it is needed. The assault triggered protests in the cities all over the country while the public in general and students in particular held prayers for Malala’s early recovery on Wednesday.

**Official sources said that the attack has also disturbed the political leadership as intense debate is underway in the Federal Capital whether a full-fledge strike is a must or only surgical strikes could help flush out militants from the insurgency-infested northwest Pakistan. The statement of the Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, claiming that they would not spare her even if she survived has added fuel to the fire. The Taliban’s claim is very much disturbing and is being taken very seriously by those who matters in the policymaking.

“The threat posed by the militancy suggests that Army action in NWA is in the best interest of Pakistan,” a senior official in the Defence Ministry told The Nation on the condition of anonymity.

However, he said, considering the internal dynamics of the country, it is important to comprehend that timings and magnitude of the military operation in NWA should be decided by Pak Army.

Well-informed sources said that the military has already suggested to the Federal government that “the internal dynamics of Pakistan dictate that a detailed and comprehensive strategy be formulated to cleanse areas infected by terrorism through shrewd corrective measures and judicious action with least collateral damage. Such strategy has to be indigenous one with blend of native society.”

“The visibly angry (military) Generals were seen keeping their fingers crossed during a closed-door meeting at the GHQ,” a military source familiar with the development said on Wednesday, requesting his identity not to be revealed. “Enough is enough. The red-lines are crossed and no more patience,” the source quoted one of the officers as telling his fellows.
**
At a time when the attack has angered the entire nation, all eyes are on GHQ in Rawalpindi as far as action against the militants is concerned.**

“Presently, there is no ongoing military operation in NWA but the strike is imminent,” another source in the Defence Ministry said.

The Tuesday’s attack has triggered protests against the Taliban across the country, a rare phenomenon in a society where militants enjoy public support to some extent.

“Despite horrible and terrible Taliban bombings that shook the country during the last four to six years, we had never seen such public anger against Taliban,” a security expert said, adding, the attack on the 14-year-old rights activist has changed the scenario.

The students and civil society are on the streets. The politicians are condemning the brutal attack and the people are whispering against the Taliban at public crossings, he added.

Had they reacted when GHQ, Mehran base and Kamra were attacked, Malala would have been doing her homework at her home instead of fighting for her life in an ICU.

But it’s better late than never. I hope they either do it to the finish, or just let it pass silently.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

This is just another eyewash. What happened to 2009 cleanup of Swat by these very gentlemen? Is there any explanation or answer for spending billions on operations with no results?

Re: Top commanders say ‘enough is enough’

Frankly speaking, I am also not reading much into it. It may be a stunt to cool down widespread anger and disappointment. They did not react to Kamra airbase attack, but are angry over attack on a girl student. How sweet… :hmmm:

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

And some wannabe liberals are claiming Pakistani awam hasn't done "enough".

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

The Army cleared Swat, there are no armed men at intersections, schools are open, business is open, corpses arent hanging from the lamp posts... For the most part, Swat is normal. These attacks by individuals are very difficult to effectively eleiminate. All it takes is a small hand gun or just a knife to kill someone. Any motivated terrorist could sneak up and killl anyone, and there really is nothing that can be done. You cant blame the army for such attacks. The same could have happened anywhere.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

If enough is enough then what are you going to do about it? sh!tting in pants is not going stop these militants.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

I've returned from Swat almost a month ago... today's Swat is safer than Karachi...

even thinking about Army securing an area as large as Swat, by force, for years, that no such event occurs is childish. its Govt's job to move in and establish the rule of law and turn people against these criminals, unfortunately still there is no govt, except banners and billboards of all political parties from PPP, PMLa-z, to PTI, ANP, no one.

this Govt could not even restore electricity to a large part of Swat district after the devastating flood 2 years ago...

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

That's not really fair. Some nut job made a video halfway across the world and the entire country was rallying behind Youtube boycotts and public demonstrations. Compare that to the response for this incident and you'll see why things never change.

That was in another country and has no effect on a Pakistani's life. This should wake people up but it won't.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

Do you want similar 'protests' as they did for the movie? Do you want us to go out in the streets and ransack banks and public property? Do you want us to go shooting rounds indiscriminately to demonstrate our anger?

I am sorry, but those hooligans do not represent 'entire country' as you say. It is not my fault if peaceful demonstrations are not making spicy headlines in the media for you. So easy to criticize sitting comfortably behind a keyboard.

Re: Top commanders say ‘enough is enough’

It wasn’t done by an individual. It was done by a mentality, an ideology. Did you miss the report of TTP owning the attack? And did you also miss TTP’s resolve that Malala has to die?

It’s understandable if an individual resort to this kind of nonsense. But there is a huge militant organization razing our schools, shooting our kids and pledging that Malalas will have to die.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

Nice hyperbole but you presented the answer yourself: peaceful demonstrations. There were plenty over the movie and, as far as I know, very little over this incident. Care to explain the discrepancy?

My argument was not that the entire country is violent. My argument was that the country is apathetic towards incidents such as this shooting, yet work themselves into a frenzy (violent or non-violent) over religious slights.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

Terrorism cannot stop by action of armed forces overcoming the terrorists alone. Terrorism would only stop if terrorists start getting terrorised by armed forces so that enough fear gets in their heart making them stop terrorising others and become human.

This can happen if Pakistan‘s armed forces acts against them strongly and brutally with policy of ‘shoot these animals on sight without questions and without making any of them prisoners’, with purpose to terrorise them and make them develop fear in their heart of breaking laws and terrorising others.

Re: Top commanders say ‘enough is enough’

Again, in the age of spicy sensational reporting, peaceful demonstrations are notmaking it to the media. The fact that there would be special prayers in mosques for her after Jumma today, should be a light at end of tunnel too.

You specifically said “entire country was rallying behind Youtube boycotts and public demonstrations”. Taking GS population as a sample, how many of us were for the demonstrations and boycotts? If you consider lathhi yielding, slogan chanting, mullahs as ‘entire country’, I am sorry, you are delusional. They get more prominent because, 1. they are much more violent and 2. they easily get media attention. Can you check how many articles were written in newspapers against that crappy movie v/s against this attack? I would say the later outnumbers former 30 to 1.

For me, it is rather heartening that the country seemsmore united over condemning this attack than the movie demonstrations or drone attacks. It is only that those who go on to the street destroying life and property make it to the news. If you want to see same frenzy as those movie demonstrations, you’ll be disappointed. I pray that the condemnation and protests remain peaceful.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

There are just huffing and puffing. I will believe when I see the action. If I was in charge I'd be thinking about how to secure Afghan border and eliminate terrorists.

Government deliberating military operation in N Waziristan: Rehman Malik

KARACHI: Terming North Waziristan a hub of terrorists, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday that the government is seriously considering a military operation in the tribal badlands, reported DawnNews on Friday.

Speaking to the media at Karachi airport, Malik referred to the Taliban as “oppressors” and said that the entire nation was united against them, the report stated.

The report further quoted Malik as saying that the terrorists had not just attacked 14-year-old child rights activist Malala Yousafzai but had attacked the entire nation. He added that the government and the military will decided whether there is a need for an operation in North Waziristan or not.

The US has long been calling on Pakistan to go after the deadliest Afghan insurgents, the Haqqani network, which is believed to be based in North Waziristan.

Islamabad had voiced concerns when US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta disclosed that the Pakistani military was planning to start an operation against militants in North Waziristan, which invited strong criticism in Pakistan.

Pakistan government and military has maintained that they will not be pushed into launching an operation in North Waziristan, and that troops will only be sent in once if and when the state feels the need.

Has he been indicated by the Generals who recently met at the GHQ? Are we really going to NWA?

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

The painful realities of the ground come to the light after the attack on Malala.
Pakistan require a painful surgery to remove the cancer of breading ground for extremism which should be started with change of curriculum at schools and closures of all the madrissass, period.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

Now our army is on a March to Waziristan .
Drones and our army
Both are on a same target .

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

Like Amal said, why is that they didnt take on them right after those attacks on military installations and many other brutal attacks since last 2 years. anyways, I just hope those are not just shallow promises again, but they are actually sincere in getting rid of this cancer.

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

And some more money from US

Re: Top commanders say 'enough is enough'

this so called aid should be cut off completely, so Pakistan can stand on its own feet.
