At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply Mush?
Elections are done, votes counted, and winners announced. Thanks to a short short campaign season, we didn’t hear much as to how our politicians would fix our country’s infrastructure, or streamline taxes, or create jobs, or do something about badly needed housing. So is this now time to start asking these questions so vital to the prosperity and stability of the country? It is time to send emails, letters, or personal wishes to the winners to ask how they will do the following?
Take care of the infrastructure like roads, rails etc.
Availability of Clean water and removal of sewage
Improvement in school system
Job creation
Streamlining of our 200 years old tax system
Housing for the poor
Improvement of air quality around our major cities
Or it is going to be business as usual. Corruption, and infighting and pulling down the president’s pants?

I agree, this is what we should do as citizen of the country so they should know people didn't vote them in for nothing.

As citizens of Pakistan, we should keep an eye on them, we all know about them. If anyone finds anything wrong we need to get judiciary/media involved.
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply bringing dow Mush?
At least Musharraf had some plans for these goals and was executing them and even completing projects. Well, you guys wanted the opposition in who hated him just as much as everyone else. Now, deal with it.
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply bringing dow Mush?
I'm all for electing in good leadership, and anyone who's studied knows that democracy requires a good education base and also requires minimal to zero interference on voting day, neither of which happened in Pakistan. You want to call that democracy, go ahead, but I don't call a sheep in wolf's clothing an actual wolf.
I stand by whoever does good for his country, whether its in the form of a monarch, an absolutist, a democratically elected PM or President, or whatever.
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply bringing dow Mush?
Democracy: A government elected by the people.
That's precisely what happened here. Call them names if you will, they have done bad in their past, but then so did those that constituted Q-League, afterall, they were derivatives of the PML.
Militancy in Pakistan - Do PPPP, PML(N), ANP have an answer for it?
I am from Peshawar and while i am glad we democracy now, I am worried about the situation in my province. I am afraid whats going on in NWFP is not going to end anytime soon because no political party has any well thought out plan for ending it. I know they all say that they'l hold TALKS. But TALKS were held before too. What will make their TALKS different? FIGHTING is not an option either.
What I understand is that the foreign forces are in Afghanistan to solve their problems but they have become a problem themselves now. And situation in NWFP and the tribal belt will only change when the foreign forces leave afghanistan. Is any political party/coalition capable of standing to the US? Can they say NO to the US? Can they ask them to leave?
What do you think will be their strategy? What is going to work?

They wont deal with it. There was only one agenda for them, the hope that whoever is elected ousts Musharaf. They will be sorely disappointed if this does not happen. :)
With regards to economy, infrastructure, Free Media, Pakistan had never had it so good as the past 8 years.
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply bringing dow Mush?
Well don't just blame Mush bashers here. Don't forget IT IS because of Mush's wonderful NRO (the consequences of which he probably did not think thru clearly at the time), a selfish and ill-advised move that he thought would prolong his kursi that all those bitterly opposed to him are not only back in the assembly but in government. Not that PML-Q lotas are any better but it is mainly because of that presidential decree that we are seeing the same old tried and tested corrupt faces back in parliament. ab bhugto yaani khud hee apnay paaon par kulhaari maar dee. And thanks to Mush the unthinkable has happened, a previously inconceivable PPP-PML-N alliance has happened and their coalition government will not merely take dictations from him like Shortcut Aziz
Re: Militance in Pakistan - Do PPPP, PML(N), ANP have an answer for it?
Good question. In fact the concern is not limited to NWFP but entire Pakistan.
Till recently almost all political figures from all opposing parties have been on record stating that 'until free elections are not held and peoples representatives not allowed to form a new govt, until Musharraf didn't leave the Army and uniform, or until Musharraf was visible in power terrorism would continue and would remain uncontrollable'. No one explained how exactly. Not to mentioned that these statements made it seem like it was they inciting violence trying to oust Mush given the surety they used to give regarding decline in terror the moment there are fair elections, new govt etc.
Now what we have to see is whether they all remember these statements. Whether they realize that the moment has come to actually address the issue and state a plan to counter it from all dimensions. Let's see if the new govt and the peoples elected leaders can think straight, understand, realize, plan and counter.
Meanwhile similar questions ought to be asked about a number of other pressing national issues.
Re: Militance in Pakistan - Do PPPP, PML(N), ANP have an answer for it?
The flip side is that a freely elected government has greater moral authority to use extreme levels of force than a government that was elected with even the slightest doubt.
The PPP's rule in the 1970s, for example, featured the full unleashing of the Army against Baloch rebels, I believe.
Re: Militance in Pakistan - Do PPPP, PML(N), ANP have an answer for it?
Shadan,
You will find detail answer of your question under thread 'Aitzaz Ahsan on geo tv... ' #2 of his video interview. What he said about this issue makes lots of sense.
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc. or simply bringing dow Mush?
So far the top agenda is;
Investigation by UN
Reinstatement of ex-Judges
Picking up disputes with the Presidency which could facilitate Musharraf's exit.
All this will take a while to shape up. Till then we can sit back and forget that Pakistan and the nation is also a party to the feast. Soon thereafter it shall be mid year and time for Budget 2008-9. We shall see how poverty is alleviated, flour made cheap, fuel made affordable and so on. Meanwhile differences between the lucky Prince of Larkana and Ameer-ul-Momnineen of Raiwind Sharif might take up better shape. Meanwhile the leashless and diefiant teenage Media spoiled by the previous govts inept dictatorial iron fist would also begin discovering the winds of change. A trailer was run last month at Raiwind palace for journalists Rana Mubasher and Jazmine Manzoor of Business Plus, owned by Salman Taseer of PPP.

Well expressed PCG!

What do you suggest Musharraf should have done?
When he barred the bad eggs and used the raw material available he was constantly cursed for it.
When he let the bad eggs back in and let the people chose, the people chose the older bad eggs, again.
Why is Musharraf blamed for the nation's rationality or irrationality?
Or would you agree that 1999-2002 was the best when Mush was CE and sole power as dictator without any makeshift democratic setup!?
I would like to invite further discussion on a few more equally pressing issues, which were used by the previous govt’s opposing powers to maximum potential for mileage against Musharraf and his allies in order to gain power in the 2008 elections, which they now have.
SO the big talks on poverty, economy, sugar, flour, employment, inflation, foreign investment, local interest, banks and so on- all issues upon which the great leaders of today were sympathetic with the poor, drained masses, need to be addressed asap. Budget time is just round the corner.
What will the new govt do?
What can the new govt do?
Will it subsidize so much to gain instant popularity?
Would that lead to rapid depletion of reserves?
Will poverty be alleviated like they claimed!?
What is the big plan!?
Or will they have to hire Shaukat Aziz the world class economist with 8 years experience of running one of the world’s most distraught economies somehwat successfully, as a consultant on a multi million dollar fee?
Re: POVERTY in Pakistan - Do PPP, PML(N), ANP have an answer for it?
Ceaser,
I though the 'great' president Mush is still in power. In his 9 years of rule, there has been un-precedence economic growth, poverty has declined manifold since he took over, and everywhere rivers of milk and honey are flowing. According one who praised him all the time since registering in this forum, said that Pakistan has produced no better leader than Mush and he is even better than Quaid-e-Azam. So what poverty are you talking about?:D
Re: At the top of political agenda! Economy? Jobs? Etc? or simply bringing down Mush?
Ceaser,
Though it is too late, he should have anncounced elections with in three months after kicking NS in 1999. He should have gone back to barracks where he originally belonged. Perhaps by doing that Pakistan would have not faced jehadis situation as it is facing today.
