Too much Matam ?

Re: Too much Matam ?

Hazrat Awais Qarni ra was great Sahabi, but he did not have the chance to live with Prophet saw and learn directly from him. Other Sahaba did that and they transmitted what they learnt from Prophet saw to rest of Ummah. Hence rest of Ummah shud follow what Sunnah is.

You tell, did Ali ra love Prophet saw less than Hazrat Awais Qarnu ra? Why he did not smash his teeth?

Re: Too much Matam ?

The Prophet(saw) expressed his approbation when he was apprised of his companion's act of love. It can be inferned from his approval that the "act of love" was in perfect harmony with Islamic beliefs.

Now what you have stated was exactly the point of my post. Just because some other sahabi did not express his love in such a way does not allude to the conclusion that other companions did not love the prophet(pbuh), nor does it invalidate haz Awais's r.a. action.

Allow me to cite another incident. After the demise of the Prophet(saw) haz Umar, was clearly "disturbed". So enraged was he that he was ready to kill anyone who called the Prophet(saw) as dead. Now what was this act? Obviously he loved the Prophet(saw). Can we infer from this that others did not love the prophet(saw)?

Re: Too much Matam ?

I have never come across any tradition saying that Prophet saw approved of the act of Hazrat Awais Qarni ra, if there is one please show me, bcoz i think if Rasoolullah saw had approved of his act others wud have followed suit.

And regarding Hazrat Umer ra if he did infact kill soeone that day, do you think he wud not have been prosecuted? It again tells that such incidents cannot be taken as examples. The matam that happens is NOT natural. It is an emoton that people get upon themselves artificially.

Re: Too much Matam ?

I would look for that reference for you. In fact, haz Awais r.a. is famous because of this very incident. He was famous for his love, enamoured of the Prophet's(saw) personality.

When I listen to the sermons, or even read about the tragedy of the karbala I cant help but cry. During the "Jaloos" when emotions reach their zenith I do mataam( same when emotions reached their zenith in haz Awais's r.a. case). When I do not feel like doing mataam, I avoid it.

Re: Too much Matam ?

here you go :
When the news reached him in Yemen that two teeth of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) were broken in the battle of Ohad, he extracted all his teeth. When the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) got the news in Medina that Owais had struck down all his teeth, he (s.a.w) exclaimed, "Indeed Owais is our devoted friend."

This event can be found written in 'Tazkeratul Aulia' by Sheikh Fariddun Attar, also 'Ihsanul Uyun' commonly known as 'Seerate Halbia' vol II, page 295.

Re: Too much Matam ?

k lets not go down that road again. we all know shias have their own source for the validity of maatam, mourning, etc. sunnis dont believe in it. But thats not what this thread is about, so i think we'll just leave it at that.
