Ladies and Gentleman, please avoid tomatoes for some time as a recent outbreak of salmonella has caused severe illness and even death. The following 17 states of the US have reported illness:
Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
That is why I was wondering why only vine tomatoes were available at the grocery store yesterday!
Not all types of tomatoes have been affected. It is safe to eat cherry tomatoes, home grown tomatoes and the ones still on their vine.
One clarification , it is OK if you cook them as all kind of bacteria die when you cook anything. Like we use them to make salan or cook any other way.
Consuming raw tomatoes have been linked to outbreak.
Is it for all grocery stores or just limited to certain ones?..it was my understanding that here in va we were to avoid GIANT. They pulled everything off the shelf when I went to the store yesterday. Not only did I avoid buying tomatoes but I avoided buying any produce from there…at least for now
I agree with Niksik…I wont take any chances …cooked tomatoes or not! I’m not buying it.
Thank you. Please continue to post updates regarding this, when they get available. Hopefully not many people are affected by the outbreak and precautions are taken. Will also follow it in my local papers and try to get an idea of how severe this outbreak is.

If you’re unsure where your tomatoes are from, contact the store or place of purchase for that information.
though they say that if you cook them, you will kill the bacteria .. so avoid eating them raw .. but even then, if you could throw them away, that would be better
Wasay someone told me that it is healthier to use canned tomatoes than fresh, has more lycopene. For salads and stuff where you use raw obviously canned would be gross and not taste or look as nice, but for cooking I mean
