To all the style divas... i need some help!

guys i m plannin to get a long shirt and capri stitched for a Ramadan dinner party. here are my qs:

  1. how much shud the “PAINCHA” be of the capri (I am pretty broad and only a bit heavy from legs) and how fitting should they be from the thighs?
  2. I would love to go with the big sherwani type gala’s with the shirt but I have a pretty thick neck and I have tried wearing collars before (albeit smallers ones) and it emphasised my shoulders and neck.. is there any way I can carry the sherwani type gala without lookin fat from the shoulder/head area?
  3. I am 5’6, how much should the length of the kameez be, in order for it to be pretty long?? is 44 inches enough?
  4. I am thinkin of going with a basic black and white combo. black kameez, white dupatta and capri. I am thinking since I am gonna buy the cloth myself from the scratch… how should I adorn the sherwani collar… i mean some sequins or something so that it looks attrative… I am thinkin front open shirt maybe with nice diamond type buttons??? gosh i m sooooooo confused !
here is the pic .. i wanna make my kameez gala and a bit front openin (jus before chest) but i want longer kameez and a bit loose capri.. she is wearin tooo tight capri… please tell me how do i put kaam on the gala and kameez on the plain black kameez… remember this is from ramdan party… it should have some shine or sequins etc

Any help would b greatly appreciated

Top right bar titled "quickie" has a sub heading "features". Under "features" is an option "upload images". Just make sure the name of the file you want to upload does not have spaces in it.

Let me see a picture so I can give you some ideas on how to alter it to your personal specs.

thanks dear.. i uploaded the pic!

Re: To all the style divas… i need some help!

I like the colors. But since you mentioned you’re not super skinny, a darker color would look good on you. Black is fine. A long shirt is a good idea. Since your capris are going to be high, the shirt should fall about 5 inches above the capris. The slit (chaak) of the shirt should be cutting you off right at the belly button height but make sure your sherwani has a slit in the center (open slit at the front). This is let the fabric fall away from you body, accentuating the smallest pasrt of your curves – the waist. This way, the slits (chaaks) on the sides won’t make your thighs looks heavy. Make the capris so that you can comfortably sit on the floor with you legs crossed and not feel like you’d rip your pants. That’s a classic fit test..!
If you don’t have super skinny arms, I wouldn’t recommend a sleeveless at all. In fact, full sleeves that flow away from the wrists would look good. Or make the sleeves so that the fabric covers the heaviest part of your arm – the biceps.
For the neckline, make the “v” of the neckline wider instead of super skinny. The wider one will compliment your neck instead of drawing attention to the contrast of the skinny neckline and your neck.

I am posting a picture of the full sleeves I was talking about.

Stay Beautiful.

Thanks for such a great reply..it was insightful! ok so i have decided the basics.. i will go with the same gala in the pic i posted but with a slighter wider V neckline, like u said.
2) With long sleeves.. i have heavy arms.
I was not thinking of have a front open slit.. is it must to have the slit.. ? I am not much worried about the chaak. Ill have it below or above the belly button.. i have tummy prb too :frowning:
by 5 inches above capri u mean the shirt shud b long enough that only 5 inches of the capri should be visible rite??? :S
What about the paincha of the capri… I have seen either really small painchas or really big ones which i dun like as they look like bell bottoms almost. whats the perfect size of the paincha of the capri??
what should i put on my sherwani gala? what sequins or things should i put to make it fancy…??

If you have the chaak above the belly button, you’ll end up showing skin. If you chaaks are below the belly button, the shirt tightens around the tummy area and that’s not something you want to accentuate. However, if you have a front slit like sherwanis do, the fabric will fall away from the center of your body and will not draw attention to your tummy – your problem area.

Yes, 5 inches of capris visible. Longer shirts are in fashion.
Small painchaaz. Again, if your capris are longer, paincha won’t be an issue, but if you’re going for the shorter ones, again, make sure when you sit, they don’t rip at your calves. So depending on where you capris will sit, have the tailor measure that part of your leg for the paincha.

You can put anything you like. Sequins sound very nice. I’m posting a few pictures that might give you some ideas. You can mix and match designs based on what you like.

I posted the above 3 just for the kaam on the gala. These types of short shirts and shalwars are not in fashion these days.

This black one is great. Goes to show you can do a classic black but you don’t necessarily have to do white with it. A great touch of red looks marvelous..! The kaam on the shirt looks great in color too.

Notice how the fabric falls away from the tummy, the long slit and all. You can get fabric under and between the slit so you don’t show skin. Or a shorter slit. But front open should work great for you.

This is another variation of a neckline you can use instead of the “v” if you’d like.

Hope this makes things clearer for you. Let me know if you need any more help.

Stay beautiful.

wow gr8 pics.. really appreciate such a lengthy response… very helpful. so ok i will go with the slit but not the v long one the girl in creamish color dress is wearing(isnt that Noor??). the pic where the model is wearin purple, i didnt like her capri.. they r too baggy and the paincha is way to big, dun u think so? but i agree with u maybe i shudnt go for black and white combo as i will b attendin a party. actually i have never got a capri stiched that is why I wanted to start with somethin really safe. the kaam in all the pics are gorgeous but i live in dubai and i cant get this kaam done… i have to use my own creativeity and come up with something.. unfortuantely i have gud fashion sense but no creativity… i dunno how to use the sequins etc on the gala or dress for that matter… i wish somebody could use their sketching skills and show me how to go about it! thanks alot again!

You're very welcome. Yes, that is noor. She just keeps getting bigger..!
Yes, the purple capris aren't capris at all. That's why mentioned to ignore the bottoms of those pictures and look only at the kaam on the galaz.
You can buy some great sequins, diamond studs, braids with kaam already on them, and ask the tailor to stitch them on in the design of a sherwani as shown above. Its very simple and very do-able.
Black and white is great but might look slightly drab. You can still do black, but why don't you throw in a little color with the red or any other color you like.

Mall, I recall once u posted abt being "top-heavy" I suggest u go for a "bain" collar instead of a sherwani collar and get embroidery done on the back of the "bain" and gala as well...

If u get embroidery done on slits or damman of u're kameez or even the front-opening it will draw attention away from u're upper-back and top. 3/4 sleeves wud suit u best, and a kameez that's 3 inches above u're knees.

U can get a mid-calf capri with slits and embellish the slits with sequin lace or "piping" for Eid i'd get a ink blue and turquoise outfit or blue/teal/sea-green.. or even peach/cream.

Re: To all the style divas... i need some help!

  1. If you're broad and heavy in the legs capri's are NOT going to be flattering. You need full length pants to lengthen (and thus slim), your legs and flared bottoms (boot cut).
  2. If your neck is thicker, don't go with a collar. A lower neck will emphasize your neck and make it slimmer.
  3. Do you want to cover the part between your legs and your behind? It all depends on what you feel is comfortable to show.
  4. I don't know. For broader women I would suggest keeping the embroidary away from areas that you are concerned with. Keep them on the sleeves and bottom of the kameez. It'll draw the eye down the line of these and make you look slimmer and taller. Black and white is a nice combo, but I'd suggest you keep black for the majority of the color.

The picture Your President uploaded is PERFECT. Gawd, I want that :(

Now, I'm not a fashion designer (though I do design clothing on the side--I had a showering of clothing designs a couple of years ago), but I work in the fashion industry and work with designers all the time. This is what I've seen and this is what I'd suggest.

Re: To all the style divas... i need some help!

ok ladies im also interested in capri pants n sherwani style shirt pllz suggest me how long should b the cut of sherwani style shirt??n if it s too above (just start frm upper belly) n i dont wanna expose my belly then should i apply a stuff under dat cut??or wat should i do?

one question more i 4got to ask dat on which fabric the sherwani style shirt will suit the most???on jamawr?or raw silk?(the strong fabrics)or any soft type stuff like shiffon ect?

whata bain gala? u once suggested sweethrt gala but never posted any pic.. can u post bain gala pics? i m not goin to show much leg, maybe 2-3 inches but not more than that so i m not goin for a really shrt capris. dun u think if there will b a slit on the sides of capri, then it wud b a trouser and not a capri? ive normally seen women wearin capri with no side slits.
and abt the kameez.. u said 3 inches above the knee.. i think that is way too short for me cus the longer the shirt the taller i appear... as it is, long shirts and capri are in so i plan for that. thanks for the reply

thanks for the reply. idun have really heavy legs but i m just sayin i dun wanna show alot of leg in capri.. as u know when u sit in a capri, it goes a bit higher so u can see more leg as compared to when u r standin. i was askin how much should the PAINCHA be of the capri...? whats a lower neck and boot cut? can u post pics pls??? thanks

must u alwaus bring ur lungi everywhere. i need serious advice pls... why dun u go to some other thread and fly lungi's flag there? thanks

I am a rebel with a cause, if i didn't post it where its not wanted, then how could i b a rebel?

... However, since i am a nice person, i feel my work here on this particular thread is done, so i shall calmly and quietly walk away and wish u all the best in your Eid apparel endeavours, even tho u did insist on IGNORING the seriousness of my suggestion that u wear a lunghi.

Ho hum....
