mall, you're right. Many women opt not to have either CVS or Amnio at all. Both tests do carry small risk of miscarriage (like 1% for amnio and 2% for cvs). Some parents have the test because they donot have the wherewithall to care for a severely handicapped child. Some have the test so they can prepare ahead of time. And many choose not to have the tests at all. Its a really personal choice and many times the docs dont evensuggest these tests for women who are under 30 years old. So its not something that you have to go thru unless you want to know for sure.
I had the CVS test for all 3 of mine. I went to a doc who had done literally thousands of these without even one miscarriage so his success rate was 100%. And since the early blood test came up with false positives for downs, we wanted to know. It put our minds at ease.
