I think it does refer to the overall character. Viginity status can be hidden from the world but the nature and character of the person can be easily visible and known to the world. Thats why we give so much importance to compatibility since we click and get attracted to the people with similar values, views and thinking. If I am a very liberal person with modern way of thinking with less focus on Islamic way of living like hijab etc, I will not be attracted to a person with very strict Islamic values and vice versa.
But Allah’s power is not limited to choosing the same character guy and girl when they are able to know their compatibility before marriage. Allah chooses the best for people even in arranged marriages. If a divorce happens, it must also be part of Allah’s and he might be testing his people.
