Do you expect to and/or did you tip your MUA or did you simply fork over the originally agreed upon package price?
If you did tip, how much? What percentage?

Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
No, I would never tip the stylist or artist... or anyone with a business card for that matter. In fact, some of the more righteous professionals find it insulting!
Assistants (15-20%); waiters, drivers (10-15%); servers, concierge (8-10%); doormen, guards (5-8%); and peons (2-5%)... basically anyone without a business card that provided you a service during your visit... Yes, you tip!
How much is up to you and the quality of service you received, but generally, it is better to tip more for good service especially when you may use their services again or refer other clients to them. I suppose it helps build a rapport and better treatment in the long run.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
Oh gosh - when you pay a small fortune to have make up done I don't think tipping should be expected!
Although I was very happy with my bridal and make up ive had done on other occassions I certainly didn't tip!
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
bees/ tees hazaar khurch karney ke baad tip bhi deiN ?!?
I tip those who really need/ deserve it, not those who have taken advantage of the fact that i wish to look nice, cant do decent make up myself, and fear the fact that if i paid any less then there's a chance i'd look like a 50-50.
I did however tip a beautician extra because she stayed after-hours to do my sister's mehndi, she was so humble that she wouldn't accept it... we persuaded her into taking it eventually

The beautician is not responsible for your inability to do makeup for yourself, learn it and then you won't be a captive audience. The MUA is providing you with a service and you are paying for it - she is not taking advantage of you since you are a voluntary consumer. You're welcome to not avail yourself of her services.

OMG.....I can't believe someone actually feels this way.
How is someone that you have hired to perform a service for you, a service that requires a specific skill-set that they have trained for and logged hours of experience in, taking advantage of you?
Perhaps this is a misconception on my part but i was under the impression that a tip is almost understood to be required in the "services" industry. What does having a business card have to do with it? I know plenty of drivers and personal assistants that have business cards....that doesn't mean they shouldn't be tipped. Does it?

That's pretty harsh.
MUA's have ridiculous overhead expenses...the costs is all those products and tools is insane...it's not as if the $50-$75 I'm paying for party makeup is going straight into the MUA's pocket for a new pair of shoes....just like any service provider the amount that trickles into their actual hands in less than half of that I'm sure.
I tip for any beauty/personal service I get done...hair, makeup, mani/pedi, facial etc....
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
To be honest, if I'm paying $450 for bridal makeup and hair for my wedding I am NOT tipping on top of that. I assume tip is built in somewhere just like the taxes are. If people were to tip the standard 15 - 20% on top of that they'd be paying $68 - $90 MORE which to me is ridiculous in itself (I'm talking about people like Shirley Wu and what not).
However, I have tipped at MAC for getting my makeup done because It's free and the artist isn't really getting compensated when you buy the products.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
And this may be off topic, but as a Realtor, I face this all the time with people wanting me to cut my commission but still provide them with top notch service. People only see that they have to pay “X” percent commission bit don’t realize that after deducting marketing costs, taking out taxes, brokers cuts, gas and monthly board dues, I’m actually left with very little in hand

This is a valid point...ask if the gratuity is included in the MUA's charges...if not, I would still tip at least 10%.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
depends on where you live I guess...in US tipping is very common and expected whereas in UK it is not a very big deal as it is in the US....Munza, are you in PAK, UK,or USA or some other place?
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
I tip when I go to the hair salon, get my brows threaded, get facials/mani pedi etc. For most services I tip 18%-20%. The places I go to are regular places, the prices are reasonable in my opinion, and I know for a fact that the people doing these things on me are workers that aren’t paid that much.
However, when it came time for my bridal MU, I didn’t tip. The person doing the MU is the owner and although I was very happy with the results, I also knew that her prices are one of the highest in town. I didn’t have the time/interest to bargain with her in the beginning and just decided not to tip extra on top of her normal fee.
I thought MAC employees (along with most make-up counter employees) got comission on their sales? ![]()

I've tipped in all of the regions that you mention.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
I think they are but I look at them like a hair dresser. They get paid base and probably commission but its hard work doing what they do without charging exhorbitant prices.
I’m pretty sure if I asked an MUA charging $150+ for professional hair and makeup (party or bridal) if the tip was included and they said no, I’d be very put off. I mean I know they work hard for their money but so do I.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
I don't expect to be tipped as a MUA when I am out and about. Mainly because I feel you don't have to tip the proprietor. However, if I take someone with me to help me - I like seeing them tipped. Not because of the money - but because people tip when they're happy with you.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
Terebina...wait I thought in Canada you have to buy $40 worth of MAC products to get the makeup done at their counter....or do you mean the MUA doesn't get the cut out of $40? because I know I have heard they do make commission
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
$50 actually. But the money is going to MAC, not the makeup artist. Granted they probably get a commission but its probably not much and I’ve heard a lot of people actually return the make up after so essentially the artist worked for free
.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
Were talking about bridal make up right? well my make up came to £500 trial included so even 10% calls for a £50 tip... Just not happening... That would have been almost £100 in just tipping the MUA for the two days! and I would feel a bit silly slipping someone like Ambreen a fiver for her efforts!
LOL
even the other artist I used and use regularly Seema Syed - I call her Seema **Baji **and slipping her a tip would just seem a bit weird...
i dont know if they actually DO but I have a feeling that UK MUA especially the established ones factor in all costs when pricing...
You know retail is also a 'service' industry but i don't tip the sales assistants in selfridges
Each to their own! Not something I do.
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
MUA should surely get paid what they deserve, and they do a good job thats why ppl go to them.... its not possible for the average girl to get a desi bridal look on her own. I dont mind paying whats reasonable but the Rs20-30K price tag is loot, thats my opinion. If people things thats a fair price tag, then they're entitled to that opinion.
And its because of the ridiculous price tag that i dont believe in tipping them thats all... i did give an example where a MUA was tipped because she deserved it...
Re: Tipping in the MUA Industry
I was thinking about this a couple of weeks ago and I'm not sure what the norm is with tipping MUA here in the UK. Have other brides done it? If so what % or how much did you tip? Did you just pay it with the regular payment or give it with a thank you card/note?
