Time Flies

in USA…

At least this is what I perceived in last so many years.

Only Yesterday, it was Jan 2007 and now we are in 2008..

Is it because after certain age, time starts slipping fast …

Or is it USA ?

Cause in Pakistan, I remember, we were able to do so much in a day. Coming back from Univ., late afternoon… late lunch… nap … homely chores … friends … watch TV … dinner .. time with family .. read a book …all in one day

Even when I started working, and worked only for few months in Pakistan… I was able to do so much …

Wonder why I cant experience the same time flow here …

What do you think /

Re: Time Flies

Its the age. I was discussing this with some friends not too long ago (we kinda grew up together). One is in Karachi, one in Canada and me in NY. Its pretty much the same for everyone. I guess we must be having loads of fun. :)

Re: Time Flies

I guess because we are so tied up by routines now. Earlier, we hardly had responsibility so everything we did was "cool." Don't you remember your parents saying they are so busy or that they have such less time in a day while all we did was wonder! Now we are parents...

Re: Time Flies

Ok Tofi ... you are a baba , but I am still young :D

Ok on serious note, in USA .. if you have to go out to buy Gosht, doodh or sabzee, its 90 minutes gone cause you have to sit in car, drive for few miles ...

even to go to dry cleaner, gas station, tailor ... 1-2 hours gone

in Pakistan, in 90% of the places, taking care of these chores is relatively less time consuming cause all you have to do is to walk to your local market which might be at the end of your Galee

Re: Time Flies

Correct.
Getting the daily chores takes up time, plus you have to do everything yourself...no maasi...

Re: Time Flies

I have 2 strip malls (including a desi store) about 3-4 blocks from my house. So that car business doesn't hold true.

Re: Time Flies

maybe .. this is just what i thinkkkk .. earth revolving on its orbit is exceeding its speed ever so slightly and this is continuos since the day it started its motion... cose its like a ball thrown in the air.. how can it be moving on a constant speed.... when u throw a ball in the air.. it speeds up and then slows down.. so maybe earth is also speeding up.. ever so slightly which is causing time to be shorter and shorter in length... and eventually it will get so fast that it will just get out of control...

Re: Time Flies

point being.. there might be more than just our brains manipulating it

Re: Time Flies

Are you a PhD in solving problems?

Re: Time Flies

Nice theory Hin33 .. that is quite possible .. minutes are no longer as long as minutes were when earth rotation was slower than today ..

This is what I just got from a good friend Gumnaam who asked me to post this on his behalf

Now, look at the religious perspective:

Prophet:saw2: said and the interpretation of the exact words is something to the effect as:

“One of the Signs for coming of the hour will be that Time will pass very fast; A centruy will be over like a year, a year like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like a moment and a moment like the a fireworks in a split second”

Re: Time Flies

Oh no…
Lots to do
Miles to go before I sleep.

Please convey our salam to Gumnaam.

Re: Time Flies

We are so near the end now:bummer:…(note to self:work on getting a ticket to Jannat:)

Re: Time Flies

It does feel as if time is flying. By the end of the day I am amazed
that another day has gone by so fast. Makes you wonder how short
life really is.

Re: Time Flies

Re: Time Flies

I do that too the tasbeeh that helps to relieve the stress but time still flies.

When I was new in USA I used to work for 2 jobs and still I had time to do personal things. Now I have one job but nothing personal gets done during the week days other than 8 hours of work at the job. On weekends somethings get wrapped up but still the list is too long to complete on one weekend.

Re: Time Flies

TLK

first of all you are looking at a life with little responsibility to a life with more responsbility.

even when u were working in Pakistan, you were not married, had no kids, were not fully responsible for all bills, and all other things that pop up in life. oil changes, furnace cleanings, law mowing, snow shoveling,

secondly, IN Pakistan you have help, yousimply dont have to worry about a lot of housekeeping, and grocery shopping , errands and chores. you have help to do it all.

and also, we keep ourselves busy, how many things do we do that we really did not do a whole lot in Pakistan, we have 24/7 TV 100+ Channels, instant download of movies from netflix, internet..

and then kids.

the distances can be a factor but not significantly for many ppl.

we talk about commute time being high here, but i remember my uncles who spent about an hour or so in commute each way in Karachi.

I think here we can do things smarter, i.e. combining trips, runnign errands on the way to and from work.

and getting help if it makes sense and is affordable.

oh, and lastly, try and make a couple days a week TV free and internet free, or do the same for the weekend, and see how time opens up.
