ISLAMABAD- Transparency International Global Corruption (TIGC) Report 2008 Wednesday revealed that President Pervez Musharraf has converted army-granted farmland worth US$690,000 in Islamabad into US$10.34 million of moveable assets.
According to the TIGC Report 2008 analysis," the scale of the inroads made by the military into ‘civilian’ sectors of Pakistan’s economy, including land, construction, property, manufacturing, fertilizers, agriculture, road building, trucking etc; and that full generals enjoy individual wealth in excess of US$8.3 million,"
TI Pakistan conducted its second National Corruption Perceptions Survey from April to July 2006, indicating that the majority of respondents were of the view that corruption in Pakistan in the last three years increased by 100 per cent.
The report talks about the incident where Chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had reversed the privatization of Pakistan Steel Mills to friends of highest government functionaries and actively pursued the case of the several hundred ‘missing persons’ since his appointment in June 2005. Chief Justice Ifitikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had worked to clear the backlog of cases before the Supreme Court, then standing at 25,808. He had demonstrated an independence of mind that had been missing from the Supreme Court since 1999, when General (Retd) Musharraf, having taken power, demanded that judges approve a Provincial Constitutional Order barring the court from challenging his authority on constitutional grounds, the report said.
On water corruption, the report quotes the case of US$265 million project to reline the Punjab’s canal system on which M/S Nespak of Lahore for consultancy works had provided a technical superior offer. Their quoted cost of US$6.2 million was the least expensive. In the second procurement process, which TI Pakistan monitored, the purchase of heavy earth-moving machinery and workshop equipment, as compare to the 2007 prices, with a similar procurement made earlier in 1994, even after a 15 per cent devaluation of the rupee was worthUS$10.3 million. Thus Pakistan was able to ensure saving of 22.742 percent on excavators and bulldozers over 1994 purchase costs.
Chairman of TI Pakistan, Syed Adil Gilani said that corruption in Pakistan’s water sector since decades has been one of the major causes of slow economic development, shortage of power, irrigation as well as potable water. Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is responsible for major development, operation, distribution, enhance of dams, barrages, irrigation system, hydropower plants as well as thermal power plants, he said.
He said that Pakistan’s Indus Basin Irrigation system, the world’s largest water diversion scheme with more than 1.6 million kilometers of watercourses, is a prominent example of how corruption pervades economic development and distorts the priorities of infrastructure investment.
Pakistan’s water sector, like many of those around the world, is fraught with large and small-scale corruption, he said.
According to a 2003 and 2006 survey by Transparency International, Pakistan’s water and power development agency is perceived to be the second most corruption institution in the country.
“Close to half of more than 31,000 complaints received by Pakistan’s anti-corruption ombudsman in 2002 were related to this one institution,” Adil Gilani said and quoted the World Bank Pakistan water strategy report 2005 that admits that top positions in the country’s water bureaucracy are sold at a high price.

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

" has converted army-granted farmland worth US$690,000 in Islamabad into US$10.34 million of moveable assets."

What does that even mean?

translation: a house is for sale in chak shehzad, the person in question has a citibank gold card now. :snooty:

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

Land = immovable asset

Land sold and converted into cash, stock, Gold, Hasheesh :hehe: or some other liquid instruments = Moveable asset

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

Looks like our senile prez. has no plans to spend his retirement life here in this chak shahzad farmhouse, doing kheti baari!

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

Was proof provided and what law was broken?

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

^ No need, Transparency International is also on NS’s payroll :hehe:

Great. He deserves it. :) I hope he liquidates mr sharif's lands too. I hope I get a cut for suggesting this awesome scheme.

So what law was broken if this indeed happened?

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

^ Do I need to bother explaining someone who thinks Musharraf never broke any laws, even the 'one coup per dictator' law? I am sure you didn't see any laws being broken, especially when the whole constitution (which is the basis of our laws) was suspended.

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

Since the Musharraf apologists are having a hard time grasping this TI report, let me just give some insights:

  • TI is not a law governing body nor a court, they report facts and figures, and they arent cooked up. Now buying or selling property might not be a big deal, especially for a civilian, but this report makes me wonder why the hell did the army grant $690K to its Chief to buy a so called subsidized lavish farmhouse, which by the way was illegally obtained. Regarding laws being broken, this matter was sent to the Supreme Court but our great dictator ousted the very supreme court panel (illegally) which was going to determine whether he broke any laws or not.

And yet you cannot even see the hundreds of illegal transactions and deals done by the Sharif brothers but get excited by some alleged improper use of farmland?

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

^ So Sharif committing an illegal transaction makes it perfectly ok for Musharraf to do the same, and go three steps ahead? No wonder no one here takes you seriously.

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

^^ well musharraf is not the first general who got the farmland from army, its given to all tom and harrys from Armed forces. right or wrong thats another issue. selling own land never been a crime in any country.

and also how can you compare the mushi with shareeeefs, they are so shareef and shreefly defaulted on billions of loans on empty asset guarantees, then mass moved dollars overnight abroad. todays DEMOcratic NS is bi product of same old army uncles.

lol I must have hit a raw nerve... First of all, I dont go by your 'facts' without findings so prove to me if any other General in the army was granted this subsidized farmhouse in Chak Shahzad worth USD 600K plus. Its about time you get out your heads out of the sand and admit Musharraf is corrupt. Also, bringing in Nawaz Sharif in this discussion (primarily because hes the one hurting your Generals ego alone these days) does not give Musharraf a get out of jail card for free.

Also, do you have any proof NS was a loan defaulter? We all know the real loan defaulters were the Chaudhry brothers, who were personally granted a pardon by the highly esteemed smuggler Shortcut Parachute Aziz Sahib.

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

Re: TI Report: Musharraf liquidated Islamabad farmland

The Sharif family corruption runs in the billions. Watch all the parts.

Did you know all the people above, or most of them are Musharraf’s croonies? Are you forgetting who Tariq Azeem is?

Alhamdulilallah. This is excellent news. With economy looking bleak, and no sign of the govt trying to govern, it is a good time to liquidate some of the assets. I recommend others do the same. :k:
