**Three detainees at the US base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have died in what appears to have been a joint suicide pact, officials said. **
It was not immediately clear when the inmates - two Saudis and a Yemeni - died, the US military said.
They “were found unresponsive and not breathing in their cells by guards”.
The US holds about 460 men at the facility on suspicion of links to Osama Bin Laden’s al-Qaeda organisation and the Taleban ex-leaders of Afghanistan.
They are the first deaths reported at the detention centre.
“Medical teams responded quickly and all three detainees were provided immediate emergency medical treatment in attempts to revive them,” the Joint Task Force which runs the camp said in a statement.
“The three detainees were pronounced dead by a physician after all lifesaving measures had been exhausted.”
Unrest
It is not first time detainees have attempted to commit suicide since the camp was set up four years ago.
Forty-one attempts have been made by 25 prisoners since then.
President George W Bush has been notified of the incident and the Pentagon is expected to issue a statement about the deaths.
Some detainees have been involved in on and off hunger strikes since last August to protest at their continued detention and conditions, although according to authorities the number dropped to 18 last weekend from a high of 131.
On Friday, Mr Bush responded to growing calls for the prison to be shut down, by saying: “We would like to end the Guantanamo - we’d like it to be empty.”
“There are some that, if put out on the streets, would create grave harm to American citizens and other citizens of the world. And, therefore, I believe they ought to be tried in courts here in the United States,” he added.
People caught in Afghani conflict and war zone may be innocent until proven guilty. That's what the defense lawyer would say. However innocents don't show up for a picnic (or in case of the two UK NRP $tupids, for marriage) in the war zones.

The many stories coming out of Gitmo in the past about suicide attempts were nothing more than propaganda spread after having almost having tortured them almost to the brink of death…So, as a foresight they spread these lies about these unfotunate victims of democracy that they attempt suicide, in the case someone might die of torture…

I agree with you that most if not all the deaths are probably torture...
But doesnt it work against the Americans both ways...suicide shows they have treated these inmates so bad they have been brought to a situation where they want to take their lives...its really bad PR for Guantanamo...So by switching the information doesnt make it look better...they still looks like brutal treatment whether look at it as torture or suicide...

It was aided suicide. Their compatriots in adjoining cells strangled them through the mesh walls/fencing. It was coordinated and calculated meant to demoralize. They probably heard that their man in Iraq got whacked.
Anyway, the people that are in gitmo now are hardcore terrorists. All the rest have been released, and many have gone back to their jihadi ways. These guys decided to off themselves instead of getting a needle. I'm not really fretting it, I do think there was a lapse or breakdown in the security and that needs to be addressed. These guys need to stand trial, not off themselves.
The US government originally said that all at Gitmo were hardcore terrorists… and them embarassingly, ended up releasing so many fo them and then tried to claim once more that they now had only the hardcore ones left. After which more were released…
Good punch line. Of course the thesis of your retort is that these people are innocent. To the contrary, they were picked up in battle fields. One was going to be released into another country, but instead he committed suicide. I'm not going to loose any sleep. The fact is that no one on this board knows the facts. The US' reputation of late does not warrant credibility and the criminality of some of these detainees does not warrant declarations of piety or innocence.
