get a crack code dude.. but if u did that it should have done this.. what is it that have done that has gotten wondows to act all nutty ..not that it doesnt do that very often..

iconoclast do a search on your fave file share prog for windows update fix. the fix is available here and there.

you can also use the XP restore option to restore ur windows to a prior state and then make sure u disable the automatic update.
I'm not sure if MS has done something to block that too. But try that and find out if it works its not like u have anything to lose.

I also had this problem. I again re-instaled my OS but this this time i disable auto update. Simply dont update from Windows web site.
Solution is to reinstal not simply format

ok i came to this room.. only to post this question myself 
the reason u get that error is cause u get excited sometimes when u get a pop up saying updates available for windows.. i was clever enuff to fall for it .. and i have the same problem now 
the only solution i can think of is either formatting it .. or just installing windows again

Is it even safe to run windows without updating it? Windows already has so many glitches and loopholes, I'm assuming running a copy without updating it won't be a good idea.

Why don't u just get a linux install and just stop worrying about all this crap?
Historically Linux was difficult but lately its really progressed to such an extent that u won't feel any less adequate installing Linux than most feel while installing Windows.
Can one of you Linux guru's do a rule-of-thumb install instruction on doing an install and make it a sticky. Let's start getting ppl migrated and get the help portion started on that platform.

First you should just try a Linux Enviornment....
Try any live cd if you can get or get VMWare and through that install linux...
Though it also have some methods to do....
I do run three OS at same time
Win XP (Base)
Linux Fedora
Linux Red Hat

Don't disable your auto update! You need that as vital updates are always needed...chose the option that says download all updates and let you chose what to install. You'll see an option for Windows Genuine something... uncheck that and VALAH!
You'll have all the updates that you need and you'll be free from the stupid windows popup.
