Things in desi culture that are gone

Yesterday I was thinking that there are lot of things that are obsolete now. For example my dadi used to eat pan so much and now no one eats it. My ammi used paranda all her life and we use it for fashion once in a while.

Name things that are gone and are no more part of our culture

I 'll start with
Paranda

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

**ur statement is true in the west and in the urban settings. back home, 70% people live in rural areas and that’s where most of these traditions are alive and well but not that much prevalent.

some traditions, i agree, have completely vanished…one of them being the tradition of host paying the guests’ taxi/train/ikka/tonga fares when the relatives came for weddings.** now, since a lot of folks live overseas, the host will deffo go bankrupt in one wedding :cb: and one more tradition related to the weddings. i remember in my childhood, relatives came weeks [even months] ahead of the weddings. now, the max is prolly a week.

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

KKF , I am sure paying fare of the guest must be still alive where they can afford to pay , fare which is not too much a burden on the host.
Folks used to read Quran early morning , it is almost gone in urban areas because people start to get ready to go work right after they wake up.

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

**i don't think so...i haven't seen or heard anyone being paid for their fare. i'm talking about the practice whereby invariably every guest was paid weather rich or poor. now, may be parents pay their kids' fare if they can't afford.

recittaion of Qur'aan in the morning is still alive and well in both urban as well as rural areas. it may have vanished among so called "burger families' but in majority families at least one person does this regularly. i've seen some Muslims in Canada doing that. so i would say this tradition is alive and well and iA will always be alive and well. :)**

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

Recitation of Quran is still alive Mirch but in West people don't have time.

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

Nice topic :biggthumb: .

Good that is gone :(;

  • Contact with the neighbours. It sucks! I remember while growing up we use to have the whole mohala’s kids play cricket in our ground. We use to be for there for each other at times of need and sadness but unfortunately nowadays people don’t know if the people living next door to them are alive or dead? Hateee it!!!

  • Sharam Haya. Lol. No i am not trying to be a prude here but i think we people are not being able to strike a balance. I don’t know what happened to the “mayana ravai” that our religion stresses upon so much :(. We think it’s cool to disrespect our elders and dont give a damn about what they say or feel about our doings. Yes, i do feel that ok if you want to smoke go ahead do it but atleast give your elders the respect by not doing it infront of them if it irritates them and things like that.

  • Extended Family bond. We are limited to our immediate family only and don’t care what the extended family is upto or whether they have any issues in life which we can help them with. We have got so busy in our lives that it really scares me that we are going the west way where everyone is too busy for even their own immediate family. I don’t like this concept of taking appoinments to meet family for dinner or to wait in a que to get their darshan . I don’t see Dada/Dadis or Nana/Nanis being important part of their grandkids life. WHY? :frowning:

  • More to come later!

Re: Things in desi culture that are gone

  • Simple Life. Earlier things were not as complicated and extravagant as they are now. I don't mind it to a certain level but when everything in life becomes a point to showoff and exhibit your money, it really takes away from the simple things in life which gives you the real peace of mind.

As a fashion statement I guess rather than a traditional way . Dulha dulhan live so far now that it is not practical to transport a moti tazi dulhan to grooms home in a Palki/dolli.
