There are not enough tent in WORLD...

The death toll in the disaster zone has risen to 54,000. Of these 40,000 died in Kashmir. This makes it the second worst earthquake to best of my knowledge.

There are not enough warm tents in the world to protect refugees from the South Asia earthquake from the coming winter, a top UN official has warned.

Andrew Macleod told the BBC that the emergency was so vast it was an even bigger challenge than the 2004 tsunami.

He said the problem was growing every day, and was “outside the scope of any government to handle”.

Good weather has let helicopter relief resume, but 20% of the areas worst-hit may still not have been reached. Nine days after the earthquake hit Kashmir and parts of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, at least two million people are still homeless and at the mercy of the weather, aid officials warn.

That's something for those criticize the response of the Pakistan government to consider.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

the only way to handle this is to do a combo of tents, ppl taking in displaced families and individuals even until more tents can be set up, and even using facilities like madrassas, mosques, community centers, shaadi halls to house people on an interim basis.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

The government has to evacuate the refugees to the warmer south if they cannot get enough shelter set up in time!!!!

The horrible irony is that Pakistan is the world's biggest manufacturer of tents.... but cannot tent its own people. :(

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

maddie, its the type of tents that are needed, coupled with the speed with which they can be manufactured. The inventories are simply not there to meet the needs.

trucks going with aid which are cming back empty can bring back evacuees to other areas and a mixture of facilities can be used to provide temporary shelter.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

yeah why arent they doing that? they should be taking them by the truckloads to areas where others can let them stay temporarily in their houses. or house some in school building etc.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

Even if they can’t get shelter further south - it will be at least warmer to spend the night exposed on a field in Sindh than getting snowed on in the open in Kashmir!

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

not sure what the contingency plans are, but last I heard the focus is on getting the tents in and set up as soon as possible.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

Someone needs to be creative in this matter...as the winter is approaching soon...

Besides other solutions...I think some temporary houses could be built ...on war footing...from any material available locally...by the help of our beloved Armed Forces+displaced people+other volunteers...manpower...it can be done very fast...I guess in 72 hours...hmmmmmmmm

PS: How could we have provided tent/camp housing to some 3 million Afghan refugees...

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

mr. fraudia -but since there arent enough tents ....the snow and rain could prove very dangerous for the children and the old

damn it i dont have geo or ptv in my apartments, stuck with getting occasional bits and pieces of updates from CNN and fox....

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

its a question of time… rebuilding will take place, but there is simply not enough time to get building supplies down and build shleters, that is why the focus on tents.

now once the supplies are there something can be built in 72 hours by a team of people. multiply that 72 hours by tens of thousands..that is how many places are needed.

as far as providing tents/camps to the refugees, that also took time and was done gradually.

Good news today…

Major shipment of US earthquake relief aid arrives in Karachi

KARACHI, Oct 17 : Two U.S. ships ferrying several tons of heavy machinery and other earthquake relief equipment and supplies landed in the Pakistani port of Karachi Monday.

The machinery will be immediately off-loaded to assist victims of devastating October 8 earthquake – the worst in Pakistan’s history.

“At this difficult time, the United States stands with the people of Pakistan in their hour of need, just as they stood with us and offered assistance after Hurricane Katrina,” said U.S. Consul General Mary Witt. “Our hearts go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

The U.S Navy vessels USS Northern Lights and the USS Pearl Harbor were diverted from normal operations to urgently load more than 25 dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, cargo trucks, a road grader, a forklift, a generator, and other equipment and supplies.

The equipment and supplies represent just a portion of the more than $50 million in disaster relief pledged by the United States. Relief efforts already underway by the United States Agency for International Development, the Department of Defense, and other U.S. federal agencies who have deployed helicopters, medical teams and other technical personnel as well as more than 447 tons of tents, water, blankets, medicines, and other supplies is ongoing. Individual contributions from concerned Americans have already totaled more than $10 million.

“The United States and the people of Pakistan share a long and historic friendship. We are honored to be able to assist both a friend and will remain an important ally,” Witt said. “In America, we are seeing the reports of thousands dead and millions now suffering and made homeless; we are doing as much as possible to help.”

The equipment was immediately transferred to the Government of Pakistan for deployment to the most badly affected areas.

On October 8, Northern Pakistan was the epicenter of the massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake that has resulted in more than 30,000 deaths and millions of casualties.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

These are needed and certainly will help.
efforts on an individual and colelctive level need to continue.
This is a race against time.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

You want me to tell that wait for the tents for some another 3-4 weeks…

After 10 days…still the food & medicines have not reached to some 20-25% of the quake zone…its reaching like moon…

Manpower is enough around…material is there…stones…mud…wood…only to work it out…

People use to live there in those sorts of houses…and not from the imported matercials…

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

well if the govt acts a bit faster rather than saving the money in the banks things can be improved

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

u really think the governtment will help the victims..?? one big joke..
u also see right now.. only the poor people r helping the poor victims..bcoz they’re the one who have a big heart..government people r juz walkin a few minutes over there.. thas all..
:disgust:

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

whatthe hell are you guys talking about. The only institution in Pakistan that has the logistical capacity to help is the military, it is stretched to its limits and docotrs on teh ground that I know have to treat solidiers for exhaustion since these guys are working hours that you would only expect superman to deal with.

as far as the tent condition goes. things are moving, no one is saving no money, they are trying to move as fast as possible against all kinds of odds.

here is a link
http://www.dawn.com/2005/10/17/top1.htm

and here is the key point

Shelter is the number one priority, with a need for many more tents than are currently in the pipeline. Local stocks are now exhausted, but 16,000 have been delivered and close to 70,000 tents are already on their way

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD…

unless they can shake a magic want and have tents appear out of nowhere they have to wait for supplies, whether its tents coming from Saudi Arabia, increased production of local factories, China whatever. what we know right now is that 16K have been delivered and 70K more are on the way, that is 86K tents.

as far as manpower goes, 72 hours to build one shed/hut/jhuggi may be possible. but you dont need 1 jhuggi, you need 100K+ jhuggies. heck if we had all the inventory of tents available it would still take weeks to have them all set up.

and yes getting aid to some of these areas is very tough. some of these areas were hard to get to even without damage to the roads.

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

We have been faster one...even faster than Katrina crisis...its heck of a job...but we have been hampered by weather...after shocks...and the most rugged terrains to operate in...and still with limited resources...c'mon guys...

This just in...Pakistan has accepted Indian helis but will only be flown by the Pakistani pilots...

Re: There are not enough tent in WORLD...

<>

You don't have to multiply the manpower...people are there...material is there...like the debri could also be used...its like cells operating everywhere...small cells of 4-6 people in a given locale...or shelter...
