Shia and Sunni are not creations of misguided followers but rather two different political understandings of Islam. Shia's think that prophet Mohammed's (pbuh) family is capable of ruling the muslims while sunnis think it can be anyone who is capable. Both have their valid reasoning for their understandings.
It just shows how much Islam is democratic. I wonder if the same goes for other religions. And No, I don't want Rani's explaination that she knows few Hindus who disagree and hence Hinduism is democratic.

The question by rvizk is loaded, read between the lines Muslims. Changes is right.
I think it's a valid question. If Islam is the perfect religion, why the division? If the good book dictates all then how come it does capture these names of sects. One of the sects in unislamic...need help from the muslims to clarify.
The "Shia" and "Sunni" did not appear in Quran because these sects were formed some time after the death of Holy Porphet (SAW). Two sects follow two different school of thoughts. Both are muslims and follow basic islamic fundementals (as far as i know).
So what made to you to ask this question?

As far as i know Allah once told THE PROPHET (pbuh) that after he will be “shahid” a time will arrive when the muslim community will split up into two “groups”…and then later even more “groups” will exist.
I hope its true what i heard.

to me, it doesn’t matter whether one is Shia or Sunni, I respect both.
but in discussing these ‘issues’ in all of our history someone gets rough and then ‘mud-slinging’ starts which is not in our favor at all… it just increases the distances.

2 of my friends at school were Ismailis, and yet were adamant in identifying themselves as being Shia.....

I am afraid you failed to understand what that site conveys.
That site conveys there is no such thing as Sunnism or any other sect either… So using labels in Islam is not what Islam teaches BUT Muslims are capable of inventing for themselves .
