Let's touch on one more topic before we directly tackle the verses on Polygamy.
Prophets in Qur'an and Polygamy
Earlier in this thread, there was a quote from the Bible or Veda about Prophets having multiple wives and it was used in support of Polygamy.
All I have to say is that let's take the Qur'an as the final authority on issues. Let's not look at books which have no guarantee of being free from errors, omissions or downright deliberate alteration.
[al-Baqarah 2:145] Even if thou wert to bring to the people of the Book all the Signs (together), they would not follow Thy Qibla; nor art thou going to follow their Qibla; nor indeed will they follow each other's Qibla. If thou after the knowledge hath reached thee, Wert to follow their (vain) desires,-then wert thou Indeed (clearly) in the wrong.
[al-Baqarah 2:146] The people of the Book know this as they know their own sons; but some of them conceal the truth which they themselves know.
[al-Baqarah 2:147] The Truth is from thy Lord; so be not at all in doubt.
PakistaniAbroad: At the time of revelation of the Qur'an, all previous books were available. People had studied them. History was known as these books told it. Still, the Qur'an revisits the same stories and tells them differently!
Ask yourself WHY??
Before telling the story of Yusuf, Qur'an says:
[Yusuf 12:3] We narrate unto thee (Muhammad) the best of narratives in that We have inspired in thee this Qur'an, though aforetime thou wast of the heedless.
PakistaniAbroad: Thus we understand that the Qur'an will be our final authority on what transpired before it, not the Bible or the Vedas.
Now let's see the conduct of the Prophets and pious people in the Qur'an and find verses that discuss their marriages or wives or any indication of them having multiple wives.
Adam
[al-Baqarah 2:35] And We said: O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and eat ye freely (of the fruits) thereof where ye will; but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers.
Nuh
[at-Tahrim 66:10] Allah citeth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot, who were under two of Our righteous slaves yet betrayed them so that they (the husbands) availed them naught against Allah and it was said (unto them): Enter the Fire along with those who enter.
Ibrahim
[Al-Imran 3:65.11] O followers of the Book! why do you dispute about Ibrahim, when the Taurat and the Injeel were not revealed till after him; do you not then understand?
....
[Hud 11:71] And his wife, standing by laughed when We gave her good tidings (of the birth) of Isaac, and, after Isaac, of Jacob.
[Hud 11:72] She said: Oh woe is me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this my husband is an old man ? Lo! this is a strange thing!
[Hud 11:73] They said: Wonderest thou at the commandment of Allah ? The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, O people of the house! Lo! He is Owner of Praise, Owner of Glory!
[adh-Dhariyat 51:29] Then his wife came forward, making moan, and smote her face, and cried: A barren old woman!
Lut
Hud 11:81 said: O Lot! Lo! we are messengers of thy Lord; they shall not reach thee. So travel with thy people in a part of the night, and let not one of you turn round - (all) save thy wife. Lo! that which smiteth them will smite her (also). Lo! their tryst is (for) the morning. Is not the morning nigh?
Imran, father of Mary
[Al-Imran 3:35] (Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower!
Zakariah
[Al-Imran 3:38] Then Zachariah prayed unto his Lord and said: My Lord! Bestow upon me of Thy bounty goodly offspring. Lo! Thou art the Hearer of Prayer.
[Al-Imran 3:39] And the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: Allah giveth thee glad tidings of (a son whose name is) John, (who cometh) to confirm a word from Allah lordly, chaste, a prophet of the righteous.
[Al-Imran 3:40] He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when age hath overtaken me already and my wife is barren? (The angel) answered: So (it will be). Allah doeth what He will.
PakistaniAbroad: As seen from the Qur'an, just like inheritance, there are no verses about multiple wives of Prophets.
Prophet Muhammad is the ONLY exception.
[al-Ahzab 33:50] O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth of those whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war, and the daughters of thine uncle on the father's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the father's side, and the daughters of thine uncle on the mother's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the mother's side who emigrated with thee, and a believing woman if she give herself unto the Prophet and the Prophet desire to ask her in marriage - *a privilege for thee only, not for the (rest of) believers * - We are Aware of that which We enjoined upon them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess - that thou mayst be free from blame, for Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.
PakistaniAbroad: It doesn't get any clear than this. The previlege to have more than one wife is for the Prophet ALONE.
