I tend to use the word The in the sentences too many of the times.

What is the good rule of the thumb for the usage of the word ‘the’ in the sentences?

When it’s my thumb we are talking about, it is THE thumb :snooty:

you follow a good strategy. of the three articles, 'the' is the most frequently occurring, and thus the safest bet. I believe it precedes 70 percent of the nouns in english.

MQ, no he wasn't funny at all. I was being funny by saying it 'the thumb' in the initial post. I was only drtiving the point across. Armughal being the humorless guy he is, took it literally.

Right. So fg I get to throw an egg at your face everytime you use the word 'the' where it is not needed. We should be able to rid you of this habit of yours in no time.

I wonder if these things are formally taught in English classes? I don't remember if they are. It's usually the case that reading a lot makes you intuitively "know" how many times to say it.

Another really common overujsed word is "that".

This is why i can never be a teacher...
i have no patience or clue as to how to teach young kids even the most basic principles of grammar, such as aperiod, comma, "a" vs "an" and the...cant stand high school/junior high kids

I don’t believe that that particular word, that is to say “that”, is that overused all that much.

Do you remember watching Shoaib Akhtar's interview in australia (posted in vid some time ago). He was complaining that he didn't have a bowler of his pace to complement him in the pace attack like the australians did. One of his lines went like

"the mcgrath has the brett lee. the gillespe has the kasporowikz"
