Congressmen seeks US citizenship for bin Laden informant

Washington: A group of Congressmen here has sought US citizenship for jailed Pakistani doctor Shakeel Afridi, who helped CIA track down killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden last year.

A Congressional legislation has been introduced in the US House of Representatives seeking the citizenship for the doctor, who is currently in a Pakistani jail for “treason”.

“…Today I have introduced legislation to grant American citizenship to Dr Shakeel Afridi, the Pakistan medical doctor who risked his life to identify Osama Bin Laden and help US military forces bring him to justice,” Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said yesterday.

If convicted, he could be executed, the lawmaker from California pointed out.

“My bill would grant him US citizenship and send a direct and powerful message to those in the Pakistani government and military who protected the mastermind of 9/11 for all those years and who are now seeking retribution on those who helped to execute Bin Laden,” Rohrabacher said in the House of Representatives.

The Afridi citizenship bill has been endorsed by more than a dozen top Congressmen including Bill Posey, Ted Poe and Roscoe Bartlett.

The legislation came days after the Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta, said that Afridi “was an individual who in fact helped provide intelligence that was very helpful” to the operation which killed bin Laden.

In an interview Panetta had said he is “very concerned” about his fate.

“This bill shows the world that America does not abandon its friends,” Rohrabacher said.

Afridi was arrested from his home on May 22 last year after it was found out that he had helped the CIA in confirming bin Laden’s location.

The doctor has been jailed for the past eight months and media reports state that his wife, an American citizen of Pakistani origin is currently missing and her whereabouts are unknown, Rohrabacher said.

Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives, Congressman Ted Poe from Texas said that Afridi should be treated like a hero.

“Pakistan is now holding in custody a doctor that helped us get the No 1 terrorist in the world. The man should be treated like a hero. Instead he’s locked up and called a traitor. This ought not to be,” he said.

“Pakistan is no friend of ours. The sooner we realize that the better off we’ll be. Until Pakistan becomes an ally, Americans should give no money to Pakistan. And that’s just the way it is,” Poe said.

Hang the guy? Which branch/cell of TTP do you belong to make a decision on a life of a Pakistani ?

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

TTP don't hang people. They behead them. He is a traitor who was working with foreign intelligence agency w/o approval from govt.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Hang the guy indeed. A traitor for certain. He even admitted it. So did the US government.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

If you are thinking about hanging this guy then I think we should hang whole ISI , as blame is same : Being a ho to America .

On the other hand we can just forget about whole Afghan war & this new war on ‘‘terror’’ and all the a$$ licking we did to America , and just hang this one guy , and start calling ourselves patriotic Pakistanis :jhanda:

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

I love that idea.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

whole army takes money from America and double-crosses them. That prolongs the WoT from being a couple of years to 10+. In the process tens of thousands of Pakistanis get killed by terrorists as well as as drone bombing collateral.

You guys don't hold the perpetrator of these wanton for-money murders, namely ISI.

But one Pakistani, this doc acts with some integrity and ofcourse you want to hang him!

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Sadly most Pakistanis dont comprehend your quite on the mark comments here. Dr Afridi is being made a scapegoat by the Army/ISI. Why are these organisations behaving like this? Have they got something to hide about their relationship with OBL?

Dr Afridi has rid Pakistan of a huge problem. The Americans knew OBL was in Pakistan. They would have got to him sooner. Pakistanis should demand Dr Afridi be given an award.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

If the situation was switched, what do you think the US would have done? Forget the irish pubs that raised money for IRA in the eighties, what about cuban dissidents / terrorists who blew up a cuban airliner but still get to live free in America?

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Whether people on this board like it or not he has in fact committed treason. Which by Pakistani law is punishable by death. Let the courts decide.

I'm sure US law also dictates the same. Maybe not death but certainly punishment.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

This Dana Rohrbacher was on Bill Maher's program on 27th of January. He is one disgusting fellow, and I pen him to be a neocon as he was sitting there lying profusely that Obama was defunding and destroying the american military which is not true at all.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Hmm this Dana rohrbacher is conducting the balochistan hearing on 8th, is he a neocon?

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

He sure acted like one. I can tell you that he is no friend of Pakistan but I guess you can ascertain that from his balochistan hearings.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Question to supporter of this Dr,

What would you do if an Indian helping ISI on its mission catching a terrorist in India and not reporting to Indian forces instead?

How would you treat a person if a US citizen in US helping ISI for catching a terrorist and not reporting to CIA instead?

provide the answer to above and you will get the answer to treatment of this Spy in Pakistan.

re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

^ Zardari should take the money and let him go . According to a Pakistani government official , in Pakistan we have price tag on everything .

Re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Okay look. Politics 101. You take this stuff in intro courses in most law and poli sci classes.

Treason is when a national of a country works for another nation state against the interest of his country. That is what the Dr did. Regardless of you agree with it or not, that is fact. He was on the CIA's payroll. Making him a CIA asset. He is a traitor. Plain and simple.

Does that mean that the army institution is capable of treason? Nope. No more so than the office of the President or Prime Minister can be considered treasonous or a Line Ministry is treasonous.

So these retarded notions that the military, the ISI or the Prime Minister can be charged is beyond idiotic. National governments take stands to side with other nations all the time. They define national policy.

Re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

^ Agree . But we all know that Pakistan won't stand a chance if Americans really wants to take him . It happened in Raymond Davis case , and as pattern tells us , it can happen again . So why to keep our hopes high ? Its better if we just stick a price tag on it , and call it a day .

Re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Gaymond davis was their national already, this dr is not one yet. hang him before he becomes one. and scare the @#$# out of others like him who are everywhere in politics, military, education, religious groups everywhere.

Re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

you need to offer the correct parallel for us to consider this. let us transplant the abbottabad situation to india and examine.

if osama bin laden was living in the outskirts of delhi and an indian doctor had aided the US in discovering this, what would the indian reaction be?

further, in our example we must assume:
1) the indian government is a partner of the US in combating terrorism and al-qaeda. or at least that it openly claims to be and receives billions of dollars for it. in other words, they theoretically share the same goals and enemies.
2) the indian intelligence agencies are known to covertly support terrorism and are widely suspected of playing a double game. in other words, not a credible alternative for someone like this doctor to go to.

in such a situation where india is greatly benefited as a result of its ally's actions, indians would most certainly not be furiously demanding the doctor be hanged.

Re: The US congressmen seeks US citizenship for Dr Shakeel Afridi

Neither is Husain Haqani . But we all know why and where he is now !!
