The Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Sindh, have busted a network of local Taliban belonging to the Baituallh Mehsud group, who were involved in Sohrab Goth encounter in which two police personnel were killed, while nine others, including an intelligence officer, were injured.

At a press conference on Saturday at the Central Police Office, Capital City Police Officer (Karachi) Waseem Ahmed said that the Karachi police with the help of intelligence agencies busted the Mehsud’s network and arrested six activists involved in kidnapping for ransom and major robberies in the city.

He said that the arrested militants were involved in the January 15 Sohrab Goth encounter in which the militants had killed two police personnel and injured nine others, including Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) chief Mohammed Farooq Awan.

On a tip-off, the IB and CID teams, in coordination with Karachi police, conducted a raid in Kunwari Colony in Manghopir and after a brief encounter arrested Naek Salam Mehsud, Rehman Mehsud, Farooq Mehsud, Ataullah Mehsud, Javed Punjabi and Habibullah Mehsud. One rocket launcher, three rockets, four Kalashnikovs, two TT pistols and three kilogrammes of hashish were recovered from their possession.

During interrogation, the militants disclosed that they work under Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud and they were sent by him to Karachi to generate funds for the organization. They used to committed major robberies at banks and money changers’ offices, besides kidnapping dignitaries and wealthy people.

Javed Punjabi had been their main player who used to gather information and formulate plans for committing such offences. Rehman Mehsud is the Ameer of Mehsud’s group in Pipri (Balochistan) and he had been operating in Karachi for the past few months.

They further revealed that they were involved in the January 15 Sohrab Goth encounter along with their Ameer Faizullah alias Faiz Mohammed Mehsud, Abdul Wahab Mehsud, Misbah, Azam and Safeer.

They disclosed that Maulvi Misbahullah and Gul Khan were their main commanders who had been committing criminal activities in Karachi along with their accomplices Rehman Khan, Faizullah, Abdul Wahab, Shaheen, Saddam, Azam Mehsud, Inaam Mehsud, Naimat and others. The money generated from such activities, including snatching of oil tankers, was being transferred to their commander Baitullah Mehsud through bank accounts.

They further revealed that they took an active part in the war against the US army in Afghanistan, and later during their stay in Waziristan they had kidnapped and killed a number of Frontier Constabulary and Army personnel. All the arrested militants belong to Azam Warsick and had come to Karachi to generate funds.

Besides, they had been snatching dumpers and oil tankers as well as NATO supplies and shifting the looted material to Baitullah Mehsud through Maulvi Faizullah and Misbahullah. They also used to snatch oil containers supplying oil to NATO forces from Northern Bypass and Super Highway.

The militants disclosed that their men who were injured in the gun-battle with security forces in Waziristan were being brought to Karachi and interior Sindh by a man called Nooran Gul, the medical supervisor of their group. The injured were taken to various hospitals by showing them as the victims of robberies or accidents. They named Maulvi Faizullah who used to supply arms. Further investigation is under way.
