Re: The Sufi Dance
They aren't celebrating, this is a form of worship for them which is why it's controversional. "I'm doing this for Allah" is what people object to. Google sufi whirling and the word "dhikr" (remembrance of Allah) will come up over and over again. If you wanna whirl to forget about the world around you and focus on your inner self or whatever, do so by all means. But what's dhikr got to do with whirling/dancing/singing is what I don't understand. It's not prayer or dhikr, it's just whirling, plain and simple.
BBQ, I'm a Sunni but I think that's a very short-sighted view of the Sema.
Isn't Tasbih repeating the same word over and over again? Plain and simple?
They are just using their bodies to reach a state of trance and that works for them.
I don't think its against anything in the Quran or Sunnah (Hadith included in that term).
Why mock it?
Re: The Sufi Dance
well i read through the link afshi posted, and it quotes scholars declaring this form of zikr as legit. maybe its not as plain and simple as you think, bbq.

Where did I mock it? I just don't agree with it, gidsa, that's all I'm saying.
Tasbeeh is recitation of Allah's words... how can that be compared to whirling?
Using their bodies to reach a state of trance... exactly what I said in my last post... it's not for Allah, it's not prayer/dhikr, it's just for themselves to find inner peace which is fine like I said. But it shouldn't be practised as an act of worship.
Re: The Sufi Dance
Its a sect. Khush?
but not the part of Islam.
Re: The Sufi Dance
It's more of a cultural thing I suppose. Islam does not require a muslim to dance to please God or to make a connection with Him. Forms of worship are well defined: namaz and zikr. But definitely not dance.
Apaa g......... thing i always say on the forum........ everyone's Islam is different........ everyone has their own molvi......... so your islam doesn't require........but someone else's might hold it as ok.........

should not our Islam be Mohammad's islam, plain and simple?

If smiling at a stranger is considered an act of worship, why can't using your own body to feel inner peace and a deeper connection with Allah be considered as an equally legitimate act of worship? We need to stop pigeon-holing Islam. My argument is pretty simple.
The Sema is not a dance as people seem to label it. It is something deeper and to those who perform it, it can be as equally satisfying as a room full of people reciting the Kalma or the names of Allah. The intention is to find a way to strengthen the bond with Allah.
Now in the same breath, I would like you to raise objections to Sunnis, Shias and Ahmadis please.
Why single out the Sufis? And if we're not going to, then we really need to look inside ourselves.

everyone says that bhai g....... everyone can bring tons of 'evidence' and 'references' and logics to prove that their version is right............ and you can't really change someone's mind unless they are willing to ....... so this will be an endless debate ..depending on who has more stamina and determination.....
threads in religion forum are there to be seen by all.
Re: The Sufi Dance
So whats the ruling on practices known as biddat? Whether good or bad arent recommended..right?

"to each their own" philosophy does not work in Islam. If you do what's written out, that's good. And if you don't, they it's up to Allah to judge. If I don't wear hijab...it is WRONG, period..... a weakness in my iman. I can argue for as long as I can as to how being a hijabi doesn't mean you have a pure heart and all...but the fact is that wearing hijab is fardh.
SO dancing to please Allah....ummm...I don't think so.

exactly........YOU don't think so............. but you also know the other people are going to bring all evidence, reasoning, etc etc to prove their point too.........and it will end up going in circles...
PS..... my understanding of the issue is identical to what you and TLK said.....
Re: The Sufi Dance
Because whirling and twirling your body can lead you to then start taking your clothes off and whirling and twirling…then nasha…then other bad bad stuff
.
Re: The Sufi Dance
I meant to write: I know so. I am sure. 100%. Trust me, if dancing were even remotely allowed, most of us moozlims would be up and about in dance parties all night longgggg
.
Re: The Sufi Dance
Muslim attend parties and dance regardless. Pakistanis, Indians, Afghanis Iranis etc…
Re: The Sufi Dance
But this isn’t dancing! :hinna:
This is the Sema, its unique and pure. Nothing extravagant, nothing sensual, nothing saxxxy shaxxxy!
Re: The Sufi Dance
We'd be doing much fancier stuff :@:!
Re: The Sufi Dance
It’s all a perspective
.
Re: The Sufi Dance
Its all perspective and that shouldn’t lead us to judge an act purely because it is our perspective.
If there is nothing against a particular movement in the Quran and Sunnah, then why should it be declared improper?
Thank you for that! That is what I’ve been trying to say all along!
