I always wondered how anyone could possibly be proud of their nationality/race? I mean, come on with nationality you haven’t done anything to achieve it, you just have to be born on a peice of land, between those borders. Or even if you gain another nationality by living there for a few years, is it really a major accomplishment?
The race thing is even more stupid. You gonna be proud of being born a skin color that is simply down down genetical inheritance ?
I don’t really think you should be proud , but if your gonna be proud of anything is should be for a talent you carve out or knowledge you gain which can be used to the benefit of others. I.E becoming a sportsman, education and career accomplisments.
Re: The stupiity of being proud of your nationality and race
Excellent point shortdog - people are proud of something that they really had no control over, say or hand in. It’s like the White people thinking they are superior during colonization - they were proud of having a lighter skin colour. Like they had anything to do with it.
It’s good to be happy with what you have been blessed with at the end of the day but when they are soo proud for no reason over it, it’s stupidity.

with your logic we should not be proud of talent too (as they say) its God gifted.
Nationalism, the feeling of belonging to a nation, tribe, call it whatever you want to, is innate. You can say its imperfection, but then again the human race isn't perfect to begin with. It is our imperfections that define us, and make us more human.

some people have the basic raw talent or genetical intelligence, but even then it needs to be developed and polished over the course of childhood and through education, which requires sustained effort and commitment over a period of time.
Think of an intelligent person who has to spend 6 years studying medicene to become a doctor. Its been identified that this person has the potential to become a doctor, but he has to still work hard to fullfill his potential.
Or say for example a sportsmen, at a young his age his a diamond in the rough. Through coaching the diamond will become polished so that he can excel to become a great sportsmen. Alot of sportsmen have great physical attributes I.e speed, stamina, strength, but the mental attributes are gained though experience and coaching.
You're so right Shortdog! But I think it's just human nature. But sometimes nationalism is a good thing. I know a lot of people in my parents' generation were very smart- engineers and doctors. But unfortunatly they weren't that proud of there home nation (Pakistan) to stay there and try to improve it. Lots of problems in Pakistan is due the unfortunate brain draining that is still happening.
Re: The stupiity of being proud of your nationality and race
i feel that it is the pervailing overall-phobia that has generated and promoted this useless idea.ppl if have a foreign nationality are offered better opportunities all over the world. even the miuslim worlds look highly at the west. this promotes the racial discrimination and everybody then strives hard and bcumz the part of this mad race. nothing can b done, but i m still proud of my being Pakistani as i feel that criticising is far easier than putting words into action.
the impact of media and the struggle for being the best has given vent to the so-called races. ppl think that the best way to struggle and b successful is to join any race or nation and facts prove that yes!it does adds a difference to ur life.i think that by hiding ur real nation one can just disguise others but truth does come out. and this pride is the outcome of leaping for success and wordly things in a very shortwhile.

This theory is very good. The problem with it is, its just a theory, very far from being practical. You may carry it on, or even can transfer it to your children but what wil happen when those children see an entire different world when they grow up. Ppl are proud of so many things, their religion, their faith, their nationality, their race and so on.
Have you seen a Yankees-RedSox match? Or a Giants-Cowboys match in football? The trend is NYers are proud of their team cuz its their state playing no matter what, and vice versa. I mean, I wish if everyone believes on what you have mentioned but the problem here is, nobody does! What to do then?
Re: The stupiity of being proud of your nationality and race
I agree with Sarah516, balance is key.
Nothing makes me cringe more then people are like PUNJABIS are the Hottest, BALOCHI PPL are the most BEAUTIFUL, Bihari Pride, Muhajor Pride, Proud Memon, Gujarati pride, “insert some little known village” PRIDE, on and on.
It’s like, pakistan is already pretty darn small, how much more do you want to divide us into?
