ISTANBUL // When the young Recep Tayyip Erdogan sold snacks on the streets of Kasimpasa, a tough neighbourhood in Istanbul, as a child to support his lower middle-class family no one would have guessed that this boy would grow up to become one of the most powerful prime ministers in Turkey’s history and one of the most influential leaders in the Middle East.

Mr Erdogan, who is 57 today, fought his way to the top against many odds, spending time in prison and in the political wilderness, and surviving what prosecutors in trials said were plots by the military. However, he has always bounced back, thanks to an extraordinary mixture of political talent, self-confidence, Muslim piety and realism.

When the Turkish prime minister arrived in Egypt late on Monday, the first stop of a tour through three countries of the Arab Spring, he was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, shouting slogans that called Mr Erdogan the “saviour of Islam”.

At home, Mr Erdogan’s religiosity has not been universally welcomed. Secularists in the military, the judiciary and the opposition have accused him of having a secret agenda aimed at turning the western-style republic into a Muslim theocracy. It is a charge that Mr Erdogan has been fighting against for most of his political career, which took off when he became the mayor of Istanbul in 1994. Four years later, he lost his post as mayor and was sent to prison for a speech that was seen by the judiciary as an incitement to religious hatred.
But Mr Erdogan has always balanced his religious roots with a healthy dose of hard-nosed realism. When he set up his Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in 2001, he turned always from Turkey’s more radical religious circles in favour of a centrist approach that echoed Christian Democratic parties in Europe. That strategic move enabled the AKP to attract moderate voters in droves, resulting in the party’s first election victory in 2002. It has won two other general elections since then.

In his foreign policy, Mr Erdogan has steered Turkey towards its long-time goal of becoming a member of the European Union, but his enthusiasm cooled markedly as he was confronted with an increasing unwillingness by EU countries to take Turkey in. Meanwhile, Turkey boosted its role in the Middle East. Mr Erdogan’s personal popularity in the region soared when, in late 2008, he strongly condemned Israel for its military intervention in Gaza.

Today, Mr Erdogan regards Turkey, a western-style democracy with a Muslim population and a booming economy, as a natural regional leader. Caught off guard by the Arab Spring, his government has changed course in recent months, from cooperation with repressive regimes such as the one in Syria to support for popular uprisings in the region.

“We will become much more active in regional and global affairs,” Mr Erdogan told supporters after the latest election victory of the AKP, which raked in almost 50 per cent of the vote on June 12.

Mr Erdogan’s decision to visit Egypt, Tunisia and Libya was designed to cement Turkey’s political role and to boost Turkish economic interests in the region at the same time. Almost 300 Turkish businessmen accompanied him on the visit to Cairo.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

we need more leaders like him

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Because all the secularists would have a fit that an Islamist is in power.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Exactly

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Just because he gave liberties to muslim women to dress according to their desire makes him Islamist. In fact this act makes him a secularist in true sense. Secularism does not mean giving liberties to non muslims only.

I am against state telling you not to cover your head.. just in the same way state starts measuring the length of your beard (Talibanic Afghanistan).. state should have no business with these personal choices.

Anyway let's discuss Erdogan in this thread, and let's not turn this thread in to another secular/non secular discussion..

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Yeah Yazdi that is why everybody calls his AKP the Islamist party in Turkey. Seriously you guys just twist and turn reality to bend to your illusions. Even Q would be proud of your abilities.

A man who says "The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers..." during a political rally is by no means an Islamists.

A man who champions the cause of Hijab and Palestine is by no means an Islamist.

A man who says that Turkey is the Muslim country that can bridge the West with the true meaning of Islam is by no means an Islamist.

Every political analyst who works on Turkey and the AKP has stated that the grassroots power base of Erdogan is based in Islamic identity. He is a forward thinking leader. He is smart, resourceful and articulate. He is also an Islamist one whose wife wears a hijab at that.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Tell me one example from the one's you have mentioned where he has forced the veil on someone. Where he has measured the beards. last time I visited Turkey 2/3 months back.. people were drinking wine in the restaurants, there were resorts in Bordrum/Antalya with topless beaches, and Istanbul had a vibrant nightlife.. without any protest from your Islamist Erdogan..

Rich Iranians come to Turkey to conduct their weddings because women can dress freely as they please unlike Iran. Turkey has become number one tourist destination for Russians who want to enjoy liberal beaches. All this is happening under the Islamist Erdogan..

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Acha. I get it now. So only Taliban standards are reflective of Islam in your eyes. I see how that spin doctoring goes. And yes that all happens under Erdogan. Because to most of us Muslims we don't consider the Taliban a reflection of our faith. You can believe what you want. As we can see already. Most political commentators call Erdogan an Islamist. He is a populist figure whose entire support base is based on Islamic identity. These are facts. You are welcome to believe whatever you wish.

Those who are considered "experts" say so otherwise.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Recep Erdogan has played all his cards to perfection. At one hand Turkey still has more ties with Israel than any other muslim country, on teh otehr hand he has championed Palestinian issue and in the process expanded turkish business interests in middle east. In last few years turkish trade with middle east has increased from few billion to tens of billions of dollars. Turkish companies have won numerous contracts and are likely to get contracts in Egypt and Libya.

Thats a shrewed stateman and we do need one like him who can hold the stick from the middle.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Frankly to do that one needs itsown house in order, most importantly to keep law and order in strict control.

I think if Recep Erdogan was in Pakistan he would have bombed Taliban, Baloch insurgents and MQM into oblivion. They show zero tolerance to any violent politics.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Naraaz na ho bhai.. try to understand Turkish situation..

Turkey for many years did not give muslims the basic rights to follow there way of life. A women could not go to office without wearing a western skirt. What is changing now is these people are being given their due rights to follow their way of life. This was a big change in Turkish society and people who were against giving these basic liberties to muslims labeled Erdogan as Islamist.

I have nothing against people who want to follow Islamic way of life in their personal capacity. In fact I am totally in favor of giving people this liberty. What I am against is when some people want to impose this way of life on people who are not willing to voluntarily adopt this way of life. Iran, Talibanic Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and many other countries are in front of view who have imposed a certain way of life on people through state by force.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

I got bored. So I did a Google search with the phrase “Is erdogan an islamist?”. These are all the links I got on the first page. Some are from reputable sources and one or two are decent experts.

Daniel Pipes: Erdoğan: "Turkey Is Not a Country Where Moderate Islam Prevails" :: Daniel Pipes

Look specifically how he talks about Moderate Islam. (Note its something me, Captain1 and hanibal have been saying on this very website for years).

The Middle East forum: Does Prime Minister Erdoğan Accept Turkish Secularism? - Middle East Forum

I will quote what they say: "On March 14, 2003, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leader of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP), became Turkey’s prime minister.[1] While the AKP makes no secret of its Islamic roots, it describes itself as a conservative party that fully accepts Turkey’s secular system of government.[2] “A political party cannot have a religion, only individuals can,” Erdoğan explained.[3]

Some U.S. officials accept such assurances. Assistant Secretary of State Dan Fried, for example, has said that he sees the AKP as the Islamic equivalent of a European Christian Democratic party.[4] But is the AKP merely the Muslim version of a Christian Democratic party? Is Erdoğan committed to democracy and Western values?"

These are all the links on the first page of a 10 second google search.

At the end of the day he is an Islamist.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

It's not only with Middle East but most of Iranian businessmen today live in Turkey and conduct their business in Iran from Turkey. Turkey has also become a doorway to all the eastern countries and Russia as far as trade is concerned. Turkey has maintained their business ties with EU also. In true sense Turkey today is a neutral country ready to do business with everyone including Iran, Russia, Europe, and middle east..

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Bhai I completely endorse your moderate Islam. In fact Captain1, hanibal, and you have a stand with the exception of some minor details not very far from what we have been advocating. I have never seen anyone of you guys in favor of state imposition of a certain way of life.

The problem is not people like you.. the real champions of islamic ideology, sharia, in our country are not like you. These militant gangsters want more of a Talibanic sharia in Pakistan where you can get mobbed or killed for nothing. people like Shamraz and I are against opening this sharia pandora box in Pakistan because we feel that if this is opened than Talibanic mentality will eventually prevail instead of yours..

If you want Erdogan brand of Islamic system in Pakistan and you want to call it Islamist version.. I am with you, hanibal, and captain1 on this.. after name doesn’t matter.. as long as you respect basic liberties of the people.. without state interference..

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

That is the point Yazdi. There is no moderate Islam. There is only Islam. One and only.

And I am sorry Erdogan is the real champion of Islamic Ideology. Fundos are not. If that is the case, than the KKK is the real champions of the US and the Neo-Nazis of Europe.

The bone of contention is now is not what Erdogan advocates but rather our difference of opinion on who defines Islam.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

Everyone, Erdogan is an Islamist. He will lead a Jihad against the Kuffar alongside Zaid Hamid. ZH will first conquer South Asia and then meet Erdogan in the UK. Then, together, they will launch an attack against the US. Anyone who things otherwise is either dumb or a liar.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

For my edification, please distinguish between a Muslim and an Islamist. And, explain how an Islamist-based or an Islamist nation differs from one where Shariah law is applied.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

The rise of the term Islamist works in conjunction with the rise of Jihadi. Islamist is the political ideology. Jihadi is the militant one. An Islamist in common day nomenclature refers to a person from the Muslim world that believes that his or her life should be guided by the definitions of Islam. The political tenets of an Islamist is that of one ummah and the common Islamic identity.

Here is wikipedia: Islamism - Wikipedia

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

You are good at twisting logic. And, I don't remember reading about Erdogan calling for jihad against Israel, unlike our Islamists. Who think its their holly duty to wage jihad across the globe. If anything, he is a pragmatic leader & has brilliantly combined religious nationalism w/o resorting to violence & managing economy well.

Re: The rise of Recep Erdogan, from street snack seller to Middle East Muslim champio

islamist is from the dictionary of US right wing organisations like as the Rand Corporation who made recommendations to United States and European government on how to attack muslims and their beliefs see their publication such as RAND Publication, Civil Democratic Islam: Partners, Resources, Strategies

As a muslim we only recognise the shariah based defintion of a muslim i.e a person who believes in allah(swt), his messenger (saw), quran, day of judgement etc.

So as a muslim should'nt use this word islamist it is from the organisations that attack the muslims why would a sincere muslim accept such a definition.
