Putting aside whether you can legally bear arms (I, too have read the US Constitution), should people should be able carry weapons? And what do you think of the right to carry concealed weapons?
What purpose does it serve?

:k:let them kill each other
Re: The right to bear arms
Are you talking about the Traywon Martin case? Because that stand your ground law is just terrible.
As a liberal, I say no to carrying concealed weapons and that current gun laws in the U.S are pathetic.

Well you are the only one. Seriously find some thing interesting to do.
Re: The right to bear arms
Although I carry one , every day but I am totally against of giving this right to general public ... The job goes to law enforcement agencies and they should do their job
In pakistan it is more or less - Police can't protect people so they issue licenses to highly influential people ...
In my city , you can get an arm licence without 144 allowance in 15 to 25 k rupees .... And on average a 9 mm cost you 40 to 60 grand ....
And if you are a professional robber , heck with the license , just get a low quality 9 mm pistol in 10 grand and loot the heck out of poor citizens :)
Re: The right to bear arms
Guns and Bullets have no eyes
They don't listen, hear no cry
Re: The right to bear arms
I say no. Completely against it. I get the whole defending yourself thing, but still don't think that's enough reason to be able to own a gun.

There will be robbers and there will be robbery even if every person on the surface of the earth has a gun. The only thing that will change is that a robber will not merely point the gun at you but use it before you do.
Re: The right to bear arms
:hinna: Monk, sometimes you miss the forest for the trees.
LOL, the only reason I made that comment was because I borrowed the language from the US Consitution (which most people will quickly recognize) and that it’s not an original statement.
And for finding something interesting to do - it was mandatory reading. I would have failed the class otherwise ![]()

Well interestingly till 1990 - in Pashtun culture ( and I am specifically talking about Pakistani pashtun , no Afghanis or Uzbuks ) where A gun is consider as ' Mard ka Zaywar ' .... Robbery cases were almost nil ..
can't you attribute it to the fact - that every one down there carries a Gun :)
Re: The right to bear arms
I think every citizen should have a right to bear legal arms. Nothing wrong in that. Remember most of the crimes are being done via illegal weapons coming in abundance from mexico and south/central america. Ask from someone doing store business (or might be living) in harlem. Unfortunately, the law is not always there to save a common man from a$$holes.
Re: The right to bear arms
In principle I am against it. But very recently, I had words with my wife and asked her if we can buy a weapon. Off course she totally refused.
In our metro (not in our area thankfully), recently there is a flux of break ins and robberies. At three diff incidents, house owners shot the intruders. That is a very strong message that community sent to these criminals, that if you try to break in, we will kill you. I am very gald for those home owners who did that.
Re: The right to bear arms
I think the public has the right to carry gun for self defense . But the mental capacity and attitude of the gun owner should be considered too.
In pashtoon area Naabigh is talking about there were not any robberies but murders on petty differences were rampant and still are.
Not to say that all pashtoons are psychos , point is that if you have easy access to a weapon and have no control over your emotions this is a very dangerous mix. Travon Martin case is good example for today.
How to take care of it ? May be a psychological evaluation and profile should be mandatory for gun owners on regular basis. And if they want to maintain that right they should pay for that evaluation.

Please don't ignore the tribal culture and tribal justice system while focusing on the number of crimes in that particular tribal society just t prove that my logic is not factual.
The biggest impediment, deterrent, against a violent crime in that part of Pakistan is because of known fact, not mere perception, that crime against an individual is crime against the tribe.

That might not be true Mr. Mirch, the street crime rate in FATA , before annihilation of old tribal jarga system, was less in comparison with any major city of Pakistan.
Re: The right to bear arms
If a country has good gun control laws where criminals dont have access to a fire arm, then its ok for public also not to have one.
But if criminals can illegally obtain fire arm, and we stop lawful public to obtain a gun legally, then we are entering unfair waters where public is going to remain as a victim - and that I think is a disturbed picture.

Sir with due respect I may encourage myself to say that talking about law for an outlaw is a recipe of stupidity.

What do you mean by street crime and how are statistics compiled in that area where there is no formal governance system ?
