The purpose of...

…Farting.
Why do animals(humans included) fart?
What is the purpose/reason behind farting?
Is it to pass poop down intestines using gassed up pressure (similar to hydraulics)? Or
farting happens when different foods when broken down and combined in stomach create gasses.
Why certain farts are silent and some not.

Mods this is a health issue so please dont move this into Cafe. I just happen to witness the longest imaginable fart in the mens room. It easily went into > 20 seconds. I thought the person’s (farting) intestines were gonna come out.

Re: The purpose of...

there is a medical reason behidn it obviously and they were actually talking about it on oprah a few weeks ago.

Re: The purpose of...

lol! I like to consider myself a fairly mature individual but bathroom humour just slays me!

anyway, farts are born in the intestines not stomach. food goes into stomach, gets broken down by acid and then on to intestines where all the interesting stuff happens. The mixture of acids from the stomach with the "friendly" bacteria and flora (yeast) that live in intestines get mixed together...well sometimes "deadly" chemical reactions occur. Imbalances of the bacteria, too much stomach acid, overgrowth of yeast....kaboom!

as far as silent vs amusingly loud...hmmm. i'd assume that has something to do with how much force has built up and how the actual "outlet" is constructed. ok, i'm really laughing now so before i get really immature and graphic I'll just leave it at that.

Re: The purpose of...

The gas in our intestines comes from several sources: air we swallow, gas seeping into our intestines from our blood, gas produced by chemical reactions in our guts, and gas produced by bacteria living in our guts.

You tend to swallow a lot of air when you eat; when that air escapes out through your esophagus and mouth, that's a burp. When it travels down through your intestines and comes out your butt, then it's a fart. Your body also makes gas on its own, as a result of the digestive process. Your body passes about a quart of gas a day, which means most folks belch or toot 10 to 15 times a day! It's only natural (though it is polite to say "excuse me" afterwards).
