The actual and scientific purpose of farting is to warn people around you about the stink that they are about to experience.
Phosi (female fart) on the other hand come without warning (I guess pretty much like females).

Kashmiri phoosi is the worst. Once I was travelling in a minibus from Muzafarabad to Manshera and someone went for it in this minibus in dead winter with all windows closed. The driver calmly pulled over and stepped outside to get a breath of freshair, so did the passengers, only one stayed behind. He was the one.
I mentioned this incident to my Kashmiri friend and he proceeded to squeeze one out and asked if it stunk like his, the stench was identical.

lols. Ok in simple words. when you eat some air is also sucked into your tummy. the digestive process also produces some gas. as our digestive system has two ends so if the gas moves upward then its called "burp" and if it takes the other end then it is "Fart"

It should be noted that "fart" is not defined in the medical literature. It has even been reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that there a a need for an accepted defintion ,noted in the Journal as a "fart healt" need :)
Btw there are no scientific words for farts from the anus, we need to rectify that. Here are some suggested names for farts, and even an attempt at classifying different ones.
General fart:
Flatus anusi
from latin: flatus - blowing, anusi - plural of anus - ring
A loud fart:
Flatus anusi magnum
from latin: magnum - loud
A silent but deadly fart
Flatus anusi tacitufunestus
From latin: tacitus - silent, funestus - deadly
A carpet creeping fart
Flatus anusi gravitardelatus
from latin: gravis - heavy, tarde - slow, latus - wide
A smelly fart:
Flatus anusi olidus
from latin: olidus - smelly
