Well, the were in fact complicit. When the Muslim armies approached, it was the women who were on the roof jeering and demanding to fight.
Needless to say, their status as slaves is somewhat of a misnomer. They were ransomed for other Muslim POWs/slaves.
Assuming the story is true, he did not kill anyone.

There is no established isnad for ibn ishaq’s Sirat. For this reason, Imam Malik did not trust Ibn Ishaq. In fact, it is said that he personally did not like Ibn Ishaq so much was he against his work.
Needless to say, it is unusual that Ibn Ishaq’s work get so much credit as Islamic scholorship is based on the chain of narrators.
As for the Hadith, I don’t know if they are independent, or actually derrive from the same “sources” as Ibn Ishaq’s narration. Ibn Umar’s account does not jive with the Sirat as it implies that it was the Prophet who gave the order. No mention of Sa’d…

Treason is the most henious crime for any state, It can cost sovereignity. So still today most of the countries adovocate severe punishment for this crime. Capital punishment is normal punishment in many countries...

Treason is a even more grave offense than murder and throughout history all states have taken it seriously. A murderer can be forgiven, but not a traitor. Any state who ignores treason such activity commits a blunder and it often results in downfall of govenment.
In Islam, the punishment of treason is the same as in all other religions or laws of states. It can be death or exile or any other punishment depending on the nature of crime, and it is same for muslim or non-muslim. Bieng lenient to traitor is not an option for any sane head of the state

...and the fact that it was not just an individual or a group of individuals that commited treason, it was the entire tribe as a whole, that committed that crime; hence the severity of the punishment.

This punishment was actually prescribed by the Jewish Rabbis when the Prophet asked them how should they (Jews ended up on the losing side of the battle in the aftermath of their betrayal of muslims) be punished under Jewish law....End of story...

The punishment was prescribed by Sa'ad bin Mu'adh, after the Prophet (SAS) granted him the honor. Sa'ad was the head of the tribe of Ous (the allies of Banu Quraydha).

Now that doesn't make sense - why would Ali (R) behead the jews when Sa'ad could have done that himself, given that the argument is that the fate was turned over into the hands of the Jewish population itself?

Sa’ad was a leader of the Al-Aws tribe. They were polytheists who had recently converted to Islam. Until the treason of the Banu Qurayza Jews, Al-Aws had been one of their closest friends and allies amongst the Arabs. So it is likely that Sa’ad would have learnt of the Jewish scriptures from his friendship with them.

What if Sa’ad (ra) did not want to personally cut the heads off people who were previously his friends? Someone had to cut the heads off. Why not Hazrat Ali (ra) ?

Sa'ad bin Mu'adh was actually the head of the Ansaars (the helpers, who embraced the Prophet sas and his companions whole heartedly). Sa'ad probably became Muslim as soon as the Prophet first arrived in Madina.
It is narrated Sa'ad was injured in the battle. Apart from that Sa'ad bin Mu'adh being the head of a tribe, would most likely be a senior figure in the society...probably bit too old for the beheading 900 Jews.

Actually Quran is the only right and undoubtful source of Islamic information while sunnis changed a lot of haidth and sunnah for political purposes but Quran is guarded to this day and will be By Allah Subhanah-o-tallah. Inshallah.
