The Pet Culture

Why is it that the pet culture is not as prevalent in the sub-continent as it is in other parts of the world?

It’s just a part of the lifestyle here to own a dog or a cat. It’s big business in this part of the world for pet salons, accessory shops, food stores etc.

So why don’t desis like having pets?

Re: The Pet Culture

Desis do have birds as pets in their homes…however, they do NOT like to have dogs though because of the following reasons [perceived]:

-angels do NOT enter a house where a dog is present
-animals shed a lot of hairs and make your house dirty/unclean
-keeping animals are NOT part of our culture
-cleaning after animals is disgusting

etc

Re: The Pet Culture

I personally feel very uncomfortable around dogs. So there’s no way I’d get one as a pet.

Cats, birds, fish, hamsters are all ok as long as I don’t have to clean up after them. So when my kids get older and insist on having one of those I would get one under the condition that they take care of it. So they’d have to be mature enough by then, for me to say Yes to that.

Re: The Pet Culture

The biggest detractor is the whole najaasat/tahaarat issue and for a subcontinent with so many impoverished where feeding the family is a challenge - feeding and caring for a pet isn’t even a consideration.

Re: The Pet Culture

This!

If we ever brought up keeping a dog at our place, my mom would jump and go “haye haye ki zarurat na paak cheez nu rakhan di!!” and then came the second concern, "oda khayal kaun karay ga? "

so yeah.

The Pet Culture

The only pet i had was a tota named maina and goldfishes names innili vanilli!!! The tota flew away and the fished OD’ed on fish food!! Also had a dog who went mad in karachi and attCked little old me so now all dogs must stay away from me.

Re: The Pet Culture

because there are two kind of birds in the world.

one haram one hallal.
Haram make us napaak, so we say away form them.
Halal, we make BBQ with :yummy:

I have already 15 cats and 8 dogs

Re: The Pet Culture

My dad was an animal lover…I grew up in a virtual pet menagerie! At the height of our lunacy we had: 2 cats, 2 gerbils, 4 parakeets, 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs and baby deer…yes, you heard right a baby deer. Lived in our suburban house for 6 months before it ran away.

Later, my Ammi’s jigar ka tukra was her cat, Manno, who lived with us for 18years until she passed away.

I’m not a pet person

My husband is. As are my kids. Hence the chicken escapade last year :bummer:

He wants to get the boys a dog when we move to a bigger house/yard. Over my maraa huwa laash I told him.

Re: The Pet Culture

I cracked up real bad :hehe:

Re: The Pet Culture

In Western countries many single men/women live alone in an apartment from a young age and since they get married for a long while, they keep a cat (sometimes a dog) for company.

Also after marriage, they still have a small family and they just keep a dog (sometimes a cat) for company

In pakistan it is different, since majority of the ppl live in a joint family and even after they are married they live together (parents/siblings/etc). When theres already so many ppl in a house why have an addition by adding a cat or a dog?

Re: The Pet Culture

For me personally I am afraid of all animals so it is never going to be an option. Also for the rest I think keeping a clean house (cleaning up after the pet), and affording the care are the two main barriers.

Re: The Pet Culture

this is similar to the short years that I had in Karachi too…
we had budgies, a stray cat that I brought home, rabbits and a baby goat
apparently before I was born we had a dog named “Rosie” that guarded the house and remained in the verandah only…

my cousins there had peacocks, geese and other exotic fowl as well as deer.

then once we came to Canada I had tropical fish, hamsters, mice, various birds and numerous cats.

And you guys are right about this, it must be a huge responsibility to own a dog.
