The Pet Culture

Re: The Pet Culture

I don’t think that I will ever have the dedication it takes to own a dog.
The three times a day walking…the picking up the poop while it’s still warm. Eww.

Re: The Pet Culture

Aside from the fact that they’re too busy trying to keep their families out of poverty, the whole building the bonds between an animal as a family member is not part of the tradition in that part of the world. Their living arrangements and lack of solitude affects their need to build a connection with an animal- 10 people living in a house and visitors coming in and out all day, children running around, on that circumstance what attention or place would a pet really have?

So the bird cages are all what majority of them can uptake.

Re: The Pet Culture

Desis have children.

No time for pets shets!

Re: The Pet Culture

I have been keeping pets for I guess since I was 3 years old. I can’t even count how many cats I have kept , at the moment I have like 6-7 of them. I have kept fishes , turtles , choozas etc. I was never allowed to keep a dog otherwise I would have loved to keep a dog too.

I literally forget all my sorrows and worries when I am with my pets. The amount of mental peace and love they give me cannot be bought with any amount of money.

and I think they are many many people (desis) out there who love to keep pets…just search on facebook the animal shelter and pets for adoption pages from Pakistan.

Re: The Pet Culture

So true and also imagine the hassle when you are going out for a couple of days. I had a friend of mine who requested me to take care of his pet dog for 2-3 weeks when he went out of the country. I went mad and could truly appreciate the saying --"It is a dog’s life’. It was Deepavali a festival where people burst a lot of crackers. The dog went mad and me too(though not literally).

Re: The Pet Culture

OMG !!! I died laughing.

I have a cat. 7 years now. I was not a pet person. I just woke up one day and decided to get a cat. And we have “Kittu”. She hates to be touched or cuddled, bites us , scratches us … but we LOVE her to bits. Yes we need to clear out her poop from the litter box, her food costs more than ours, she killed a bird once and very lovingly left it in my room as a present for me, we have hair balls every few weeks …ugh…BUT…

We sent her to a friends house for a day while we were getting pest control done, omg, it was like something went missing from the house. I kept expecting her to walk in, jump over me or sit on my head or just meow for food non stop.

Re: The Pet Culture

I actually contemplated owning a cat. I did a lot of research and the cat i wanted was a Chartreux. The kitten cost about $1500. I didn’t get the cat. I’m still contemplating whether to get this cat.

Behold the cutness!

Re: The Pet Culture

In Pakistan, when my dad was growing up in the village, they had a dog, but that was because they had a large garden outside that the dog stayed in, and never entered the home. My mom had birds (not sure what kind) growing up.

In Canada, when we were growing up, my parents got us a huge aquarium, and we would buy new exotic fish for it all the time. We probably had over 25 fish, when my chacha decided the fish tank needed to be cleaned out. So he removed all the fish, was careful to put them all in water, and proceeded to clean the tank with AJAX!!! He didnt clean the tank out properly, and the next morning when we woke up, we had over 25 fish floating at the top of our tank :bummer: After that tragedy we did buy some more fish here and there, but they were usually gold fish, and would die within weeks of buying them.

Now that Im married, I keep telling my husband I want to buy a cat. But I dont want any cat, I want a rug hugger teacup kitten/cat. Those are over $5000. So I cant work where we live because of visa issues, so whenever I tell my husband I want that cat, he turns around and tells me, when I can save enough money from my “tankha” I can have whichever cat I want! So I guess its going to be a few more years of waiting!!

Re: The Pet Culture

Like how my parents say, and I am loosely translating: If you got not griefs, get a goat.

Other than the commitment and responsibility of keeping a pet, isn’t it very emotionally draining if something happens to your pet. I can’t afford to have another entity in my life to fret over, depress over. And God forbid if they die…OMG…I’d die too!

With that said, if grumpy cat goes up for adoption I’d take it. We share the so many similarities like positive disposition:

Re: The Pet Culture

Waoh!! I didn’t realise they cost that much! That’s crazy. You could get a Bunto Kazmi jora for that much. :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: The Pet Culture

I want a corgi and a scottish fold.

Re: The Pet Culture

I am annoyed by people with dogs specially when they let their dogs come running to me and sniff me and they tell me ‘its ok, its not gonna bite you’ while i want to kick the dog away. why don’t they keep their pets to themselves :grumpy:

Re: The Pet Culture

If you work with the breeder you can get them for considerably less than that amount.
One of our persians is a pure-bred and the himmie is the offspring of purebred GCs. We’re quite familiar with the costs associated with these breeds and because of those problems breeders will often negotiate the price down…especially if you are not looking to show the animals.

Re: The Pet Culture

Thanks for the tip. I have been looking at them on the website called Doll Face Persian Kittens. I believe they themselves are the breeders, and have a range of kittens from $1000 - $7000 depending on how badly they want to keep a kitten back. But the rug huggers are more expensive because of their size I guess. But I will definitely try to negotiate.

Re: The Pet Culture

saima,
instead of looking for larger breeders, look for some of the smaller ones…like those that post on Kijiji…if you are not interested in show-grade then you can save a lot.
good luck, hope you find what you want.
