re: The Official London 2012 Olympics Thread!

Well done London Olympic commitee and all the volunteers and performers. It was a dazzling display, a first class effort

And what a striking discrepancy!

New Zealand with a population of just 4.3 million (most participants per population size) has 196 members competing in the London Olympics

Pakistan with a population of 184 million has only 23 members. just not good enough imo. should be doing much better than that. Whether it is lack of funding or just general lack of interest in sport apart from cricket (and to some extent hockey and Squash … interest in hockey has died down since he 90s), I don’t know

If not track or gymnastics, we should atleast work on producing world-class wrestlers, boxers, swimmers, tennis and table tennis players.

At one point, Pakistan was no. 2 in bridge and badminton (Tariq Wadood)

^ if I recall #1 in squash at some point.

re: The Official London 2012 Olympics Thread!

re: The Official London 2012 Olympics Thread!

Not just at one point. Pakistan dominated Squash in the 1950s thru the 60s, 70s, 80s and up until the 1990s. Haven’t been good enough since the 2000s

Jahangir Khan won 6 World Open and 10 straight British Open (the game’s premier event) titles (a world record); that is like winning 10 successive wimbledon singles titles!

Jansher Khan won the World Open 8 times (a world record) and the British Open 6 times.

Hashim Khan (Jahangir’s chacha) won the British Open seven times between 1951 and 1958.

Azam Khan (Jahangir’s taya) won the British Open four times between 1959 and 1962

Roshan Khan (Jahangir’s father) won the British Open in 1957

Re: The Official London 2012 Olympics Thread!

GGot to say "uzzybizzy" is appropriate person to open the official Olympic thread- non-controversial, laid back and embodying the Olympic spirit.

Re: The Official London 2012 Olympics Thread!

True except for Jansher. He's no relation to the other Khans
