The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

I heard people can still find things to eat in Pakistan .
Geo Mushraf untill all the other are dead .............

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Acha!?? I come across some discussion board and there I found a very rational and logical analysis.
I would like to quote the whole post here ( I hope mods dont mind):

From this seat, MQM lost the seat to MMA even when PPP and PMLn were also contesting.
If u combine votes of PPP and PMLN also, then these were more than double the votes of MQM.
Also in 1997 and 1993, MQM lost this seat.
this myth that MQM is popular in all karachi is totally false. u need to check the facts and figures first.
there are only 5-6 seats where MQM is strong, on all other seats, MQM can not win if a join opposition candidate is there, jsut check the 2002 election results and u will know better. and that too ws before impact of 12 may killings.
one more thing in 2002, MQM got about 600000 votes in karachi (20 seats) where as oppositition votes were 825000. U can confirm from election commission website urself.

This was posted shortly before 8 Jan elections should have been held.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

^ Could be true, I don't have vote stats to go by, I was only going by the feelings/emotions on the street. May be I should visit areas like Lyari and places like that :D

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Lets read my post clearly:

"It is highly unlikely MQM will lose any seat in these elections. May 12 is probably the only biggest black spot in their last 5 years otherwise they have done good job in terms of development work. It has been their stronghold and it didn't weaken in last few years IMO."

When I said developments I am talking about constructions in the city to improve traffic conditions. Before May 12 and after May 12 there was no stoppage on that front. There are areas where they started construction recently (last 2-3 months). Was there some other "development" you were looking for?

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

There is no need to quote your own post again. I have understood and countered by asking what developements have been done post 12 May era. I have seen non and you state there have been some construction work done in last 2-3 months. You mean the clean up work for the mess created after BBs assassination? And the casual street repair?
Fact Is MQM has troubled themselves. With from 12th May onwards, then there was the KHI bombing, then the crocodile tears of AH when BB died.
So take my post above serious. Rest will be ensured in 1 weeks time.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

^ I would've no qualms if MQM loses. I am not talking about "cleaning" of the city. I will give you few examples, I am sure Mostar5 and Haris can point out other developments.

  1. Plots allocated to "parks" have been really turned in parks where kids can go and enjoy themselves (atleast in Gulshan Iqbal)
  2. Gulistan mor (on Rashid Minhas Road) was a mess when going towards Gulistane Johar, they started constructing bridge to solve that problem, I believe this was started sometime after summer last year (don't have exact time line).

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Firstly parks only dont make votes.
Secondly the developments you speak of are quite poor.
Finally these are projects done over the years not in a day and not after May 12th.
Last but not least I'm talking of an extra ordinary development needed after these state sponsored killings. Which I have failed to see as yet. And the bak bak done by the Nazim of Karachi on GEO is worth nothing, when he speaks of development and changes converting KHI city into a dream land. All propaganda.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Okay, IMO it is still some development.

Construction of bridges to solve traffic problems are poor? As a Karachiite I really appreciate such "progress" because it solves one of the big problems esp after getting so many cars/bikes on the roads after the banks started financing/leasing cars.

Probably you haven't been to Karachi in a while. I remember the time when it will take year(s) to construct a bridge but last few years have been really really different. Let me try to explain some difference.

In past Sindh Govt didn't have as much funding to support a construction so they would release money very slowly (as they were getting money from Fed slowly, add to that delays of Sindh govt). This time Musharraf granted somewhere around 29 billion Rupees for construction projects in Karachi hence you will be amazed to see the speed of construction. Many projects got finished in probably 6-9 months. The project I referred to (Gulistan mor) is not half-way yet.

I agree that May 12 is really a big black spot and neither Sindh govt nor Federal govt took any action against the killings, why would they when they are the govt themselves? I really hope the next govt does take an action against them!

I am against Mushy as much as one can get, I condemn his wrong actions but do appreciate whatever good has happened.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Isnt that one of the brigdes which collapsed some months ago?
Nice improvement!

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

The part of bridge that collapsed was of norther-by-pass if I remember correctly. It was bad design to begin with, I don’t know if the victims were paid any compensation at all. Out of 20 bridges (not sure on actual # of bridges in Karachi) if part of one falls then rest of 19 bridges get no appreciation? There are few under-passes as well. I appreciate the good work carried out whether it was under Jamate Islami, PPP or MQM :k: but don’t condone the parties in general as they are all nothing but crooks and criminals.

This week first time my immediate family got robbed of her only jewelry right in front of our house in broad daylight, this is the situation of crimes. Every little teeny weeny is roaming with TT or gun to rob a person they like.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Why would crooks build bridges?

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Johar More/Mellinuim flyovers were started in Ramadan and they are nearing completion (within this month). The flyover appears to be most cost effective among all the fly overs constructed so far in Karachi. They have constructed two single track flyovers at the place.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Well one thing is sure, if all these flyovers and underpasses were not contructed during recent years here in Karachi, there would have been all day long traffic queue ups and jams. Miserable life. Still, they have neglected the pedastrains here (regarding this I've been posting it quite frequently here).

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

I'm sorry, but Im not convinced by such developments.
The economy of Pak has had experienced great growth under Musharrafs regime, does this make me vote for him again? One must not forget the rest of his brutality being exposed in last years? Same goes for MQM.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Surely these are not the basis for you and anyone esle to vote them again. But at the same, time these were necessary jobs to be done by anyone.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

Alhamdulilallah. It is great that people are talking about choices and voting. See, Pakistan is a democracy where people can vote for a party of their choice if they do not like the party in power. God Bless President Musharaf for the democarcy that is taking shape in Pakistan. God Bless Pakistan. :k:

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

^God bless Pakistan but without totaliterian rulers like Musharraf and Co. Allah Pakistan ko aise logon se bachaye..:Ameen.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

They got funding from the govt, if they hadn't used it then it would've been taken away by Fed. I am sure they are charging some kick-backs from all these "contracts" but the work is still getting done and is a good help in traffic.

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

^So we are appreciating the "good" work by crooks?

Re: The Official ELECTIONS 2008 Thread

^ would you condemn bridges being built?
