Something that really confuses me…anyone care to explain to me why pork is treated like the worst sin in Islam…its weird because i know Muslims that do all kinds of things…fornicating, drinking, drugs amongst many other things…all of these are bad but arent treated as badly as pork is…Muslims who eat pork are almost frowned upon as though they have left their faith…i remember my friend saying muslims are wayward in a lot of ways but when they eat pork then you know they have really gone…
So why is pork seen as the worst sin a Muslim can commit?..or is it just Muslims where i am?..
funnily enough i am just like the rest...i commit acts which are pretty haraam but pork is the one thing i wouldnt do...seems a lot of people are like this...trying to work out why...

I understand why alot of ppl stay away from it, and nobody's saying that they shouldn't....but what is the reasoning behind it? It seems like that whatever reasoning is applied to all other "haram" things, doens't apply to pork (even for ppl who dont care for halal/zabiha)

it seems to somehow be more acceptable to do those... you know, i have no idea why pork is such a stigma. i just know i'd never eat it... interesting topic.
yeah but by that argument, consuming alcohol is bad for your health and lowers your inhibitions so you might do stupid things, having relations with the opposite sex is zinna and haraam for a reason too, etc... thats not the question.
the question is why is everything else acceptable (even if behind closed doors) and practiced in the muslim community but not eating pork? i know lots of muslims in toronto who say and do a lot of things that are islamically wrong...
maybe pork is the highest level of wrong?
NOBODY is saying they WANT TO eat it. But the question is, that why is it such a big taboo?
If you want to talk about filthy animals, I don’t think the cows slaughtered to make a big mac are kept under good conditions.
It's amongst the sins, that's for sure. FYI: Adultry and fornication are amongst the highest of sins along with Shirk (Joining partners with Allah). The reason eating pork is sin because it is not a clean animal. It eats almost anything. It is highly likely that the animal carries diseases that may prove extremely harmful, if not deadly. So from a Medical point of view, this is why the prohibition of pork was prescribed to muslims.
Food and drink have direct effect on our health. That is why Islam has prescribed regulations about our food and drink. It lays great emphasis on our physical as well as moral health, because both of these are equally important for a healthy society. The abstention from eating pork is one of the steps taken by Islam to practise hygiene and to attain purity of soul.
The prohibition is based on the aim of the purification of one's nature, because food, when consumed, doesn't merely enter the stomach and intestines and become excreta. It is absorbed and metabolized into the system and circulated to all parts of the human body, including the brain, and this in no small way affects man's nature.
Take a look at the nature of the pig for example. The pig is naturally lazy and indulgent in sex, it is dirty, greedy and gluttonous. It dislikes sunlight and lacks the spirit and will to "fight." It eats almost anything, be it human excreta or anything foul and unwholesome. Amongst all animal flesh, pork is the favoured cradle of harmful germs. Pork also serves as a carrier of diseases to mankind. It is for this reason that its flesh is not suitable for consumption.
You may argue that the "modern pig" reared in farms is given only clean foods, therefore, its flesh should be consumable. The answer is that you may feed the pig on clean, wholesome food, but you can't change its nature. It is still a pig and will always stay so. A pig is not a plant and you cannot change it by bud-grafting.
Having said that, it does not mean that people should continue to do all the other little things that are "acceptable" sins. It's just that people do not follow the book and law as it is meant to be followed. There are some people who abstain for all bad things altogether, unfortunately they are but few. So, eating pork is in the bundle of things not to do along with many of the other things that are prohibited.
Naughty by Nature, its all about desi convenience. People can live without eating pork.. there are tons of alternative permissible foods. Lying, backstabbing, cheating, fornicating etc.. well theres no alternative to that now is there?

Thread reminds me of a guy that I knew. He is Muslim, married with four kids, the oldest is 17. The guy never eats pork, but has no problem drinking, gambling, regular extra martial sex and other activities.
