Remind me never to discuss anything like this here again… I’m better off discussing this with muslims and non-muslims in real life!
As CE said… Get a grip, people!
Re: The Not Moderate Muslim Thread
BBC, relax. this is not your thread. even if it was, we can and will discuss our hearts out. :p

A’ite I’m out!

Any ideas to what is a Moderate muslim then?
Any ideas to what is a Moderate muslim then?
The one who's not Traditional neither Salafi/wahabi. A Secualr Muslim is usually a Moderate Muslim.
^ Thanks Hareem. If only everyone else could have answered like this and moved on.
So I guess I am a moderate muslim, then? I'm not extremely religious, neither am I far from religion. So a moderate muslim is kinda like in-between?
Re: The Not Moderate Muslim Thread
BBCue, seriously?
Hareem has given her view of a moderate and then you proceed to define yourself by it?
What is so hard in understanding that everyone's opinion on this will most likely vary. By some people's definition you can say 'I guess am a moderate muslim', by others you won't be.
I still don't get why this is important to you? And yes it does seem like it's personally important to you because in the other thread also, you kept relating people's definitions to yourself.
Do you want to fit into the moderate muslim category? Are you looking for affirmation? I just don't get it.
Re: The Not Moderate Muslim Thread
Moderate Muslim: One who drinks in moderation?

Just because its not important to you stoppit doesn’t mean its not to anyone either. At first you were like, I have never heard of anyone referring to themselves as moderate muslims… and then CM showed exactly how many people on GS refer to themselves as moderate muslims… so who am I??? Yes, this is what I’m looking for. Where do I fit? Not important for you, but it is for me to know where I stand.
Seriously like what’s the big deal?? Why is this question so offensive to some poeple??

Well, I follow the opinion of Traditional Muslim Scholars regarding Islamic Law and that alone doesn't make me an extermely religious Muslim.
It's more about following a mind-set, opinion and doctrine rather than defining yourself as less religious or extreme religious.

hmmm... makes sense.
I haven’t read the entire thread and maybe someone else has covered the point in this or the previous thread, so my apologies in advance, but to whom is it that we define ourselves as moderate muslims? Think back to your conversations with your non-Muslim friends - how many of you say, hi, my name is … and I am a moderate Muslim? I’d venture to say, not very many.
The same way most of us don’t at first instance go around and say I’m a Shia Muslim or a Sunni Muslim or Ahmedi or go on to explain to non-Muslims that we belong to a certain sub-sect of these branches of Islam, since for all intents and purposes, these are meaningless to the average non-Muslims - they don’t distinguish between or amongst Muslims since they’re not informed about Muslims.
I will qualify my comment by saying this is based on my own experience and the experience may be different for others, but I’ve only heard the term moderate Muslim in conversation amongst other Muslims to explain or rationalize our level of religious practice or to explain our actions.
How many of you remember hearing the term moderate Muslim in conversation with non-Muslims?
^ so we're back to the same point. You just say ur a muslim or ur not.
And thats what I say when someone asks me (because I wear a hijab i get asked this question a lot, but politely ofcourse) and I just say yes, I'm a muslim. Thats it. Which brings us back to what we were saying at the very start of this discussion. Muslim or non-muslim. No one says I'm a moderate muslim or an extremist muslim. But I dunno how people took that in the beginning.
Anyhow... its kool. Cheers.
I still haven’t IN REAL LIFE. If you actually went through all the pages of that thread, 14 or something, there were only about 6 people who claimed to be ‘moderate’ (the rest were quotes of the same posts) and I believe most of them went on to say what that meant i.e prays namaz regularly, making the ‘moderate’ bit moot.
Have we ever looked for a rishta with people telling us that the family in question is ‘moderate’ in real life? Never.
If you are asking a question** where there are only subjective answers,** you will never get a definitive answer and you will never know where you stand. That is what offends me. It is a pointless exercise. If you only want to show how opinion varies and therefore there no real single ‘moderate’ classification, great. But that’s not what’s going.
Now please, do continue because it is nevertheless very amusing to watch you go around and around in a vain attempt to label yourself.

My experience is the same as yours. Further to that, non-muslim people have asked on many occasions (for examples my colleagues when we were first getting to know each other), how 'muslim' I am. I've never said 'oh well I'm liberal/moderate/extreme', I tell them what Islamic practices are routine in my daily life and let them make their own judgement. They see how I observe ramadan etc.. all those things give them an idea of my 'muslimness'.
^ nope darling i'm done. enough of offending everyone.
Re: The Not Moderate Muslim Thread
Interesting that people ask how "Muslim you are". That is a rather odd way of providing information on ones faith.
