Re: The Nose Piercing
You’re probably right. I have to agree.
But this was the reason that I was given by my mother a few years before I defied her.

Re: The Nose Piercing
My mom grew up in a city, and moved to a gaaon after marriage. My phuppo grew up in a village and moved to a city after marriage.
Phuppo got a nose piercing while in high school. It suits her a lot and she says, it gives a “traditional” look (whatever that means). My phuppo is wahabi (read: katar religious), so I doubt she would keep her piercing if she thought it was not allowed in religion. To me, a nose piercing is the same as an ear piercing, so if someone is going to tell me a nose piercing isn’t allowed, you better be able to explain why ear piercing is allowed then.
My mom thinks a nose piercing is common in “gaaon ki larkiyan” (i.e. it is old fashioned and symbolic of class/status). She also says if it doesn’t suit your face (or say, it gets infected and leaves a mark), it will ruin your face (unlike ear piercing infections which can be easily managed with different hairstyles).
My dad thinks a nose piercing makes you look slutty and only rebels get piercings in places other than ears.
I personally think if you choose the right size/shape of the jewel for your face, it enhances facial beauty. That’s the sole reason why I got it. I take after my phuppo in looks, and I knew how good it looks on her so I wasn’t worried that it wouldn’t suit me. To my knowledge, it isn’t disallowed in religion. And I know many women who wear a burqa or hijab and have their nose pierced. I didn’t know about its religious significance in Hinduism or the scientific reasoning that it lessens the pain during periods/childbirth. I did know about the history of slave girls wearing it but it doesn’t change my preference because that’s not what it signifies today.
Re: The Nose Piercing
I love my nose piercing…unfortunately it doesn’t reflect a “professional” image in the environment where I work so I rarely wear a pin.
And madz…I agree…piercings are the same no matter where they are. It’s just that some are socially accepted and some still aren’t I guess. As for the religious side and permitted or not, I don’t think that anyone has found a ruling on nose or ear-piercing either way.
Re: The Nose Piercing
I would like to get my nose pierced… but like Muzna said, don’t think it looks professional at work ![]()
Re: The Nose Piercing
I had my nose pierced when I was 13, I wore a very small white gem and more than myself everyone else felt like it suited me mainly because my nose is petite. I took it out a couple of years ago due to it not looking professional, so now it’s closed up. I got it for the ‘cool factor’, everyone I knew was getting it done at that time so I just jumped on the bandwagon.
