Re: The Menu ...
I did a dawaat on Sunday night for appprox 30 people at my place, also had one guest who could not eat the slightest bit of chilli. Didn't do starters as everyone was running late, so was chips, dips and drinks for the early arrivals
dinner - chicken korma, achaar gosht, lasagne, chicken kebabs (on the stick), bhindi, rice, raita, roti, salad
dessert - fruit salad, ice cream, apple pie, apricot danish,(both were courtesy of Sarah Lee) ras malai (courtesy of my phupo)
I cooked everything from scratch... took me from 12pm to 5pm, and my sister's came over and cleaned my house for me, while hubby did the outside.
But what really ticked off my hubby, that we went to great lengths to make sure everything was perfect for our guests, and they brought over $5 cakes from the local supermarket, cos whenever we've been to their houses we always make sure that we don't do anything to insult everyone and take something of good quality and he felt insulted by $5 cakes. Also one of the aunties, she is an educated diplomat from islamabad, she came in with her shoes on, while everyone else removed theirs, and we have like a pastel green colored carpet, and there was dirt on her shoes. Hubby was complaining that she didn't have the decency to remove her shoes
Re: The Menu ...
^My parents enjoy entertaining.....because they both (especially my dad) enjoy cooking...and they're what I consider perfectionists. But never have they expected the guests to bring a gift......nor have I ever expected it. If they do...then that's kind of them....if they don't that's fine as well. The chief purpose of having the gathering is to bring people together for good company.
I think many of us have tried pricey food that's mediocre tasting at best........and we've had food that costs considerably less but tastes amazing. You're complaining about $5....I've tried cakes from Walmart for cheaper than $5 that are so moist and delicious. It's hard to determine a person's intentions. For all you know......it could be that they personally enjoy that particular cake (even if it's $5)....and thought you would as well. Maybe they sincerely wanted to bring something...and were pressed for time....and in a hurry bought the cake. Sometimes it may not be so obvious...but people could be having financial issues, etc.
As for the woman who came into the living room with her shoes on......just cheerfully tell her, "You know we'd like for you to feel comfortable in our home like all the other guests...so go ahead to take your shoes off....so you feel more at ease in walking around etc." There's always a tactful way to go about things.
Re: The Menu ...
It's kinda tradition in our community ( in a little village in Australia) that you take something over. No one goes empty handed, both families brought the $5 frozen cheesecake, one family is a Mr Engineer and Mrs Doctor and other family is Mr and Mrs Professor, so that's why my hubby was ticked off. anyways...
As for hte shoes thing, i didn't say anything to her, but as soon as they left we were on our hands and knees scrubbing the carpet!
agreed 100%, but not everyone has that ability including me
. i desperatly wish i can learn to do that, saves me much of trouble.
Re: The Menu ...
Is this the correct place to ask for menu advice? I have about 30 ladies coming over next weekend for a religous talk, I wanted to serve snacks rather than dinner. Do you have any suggestions on the menu? Also, my oven isn't working so am a bit limited.
Re: The Menu ...
tigerlily.... fry samosas, pakora's, fruit salad/chaat, nan bread and different dips, assorted mini sandwiches
